Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little is known about the biology, ecology, distribution, population trends, and threats of the Woodland Vole in Canada. Intolerance to cold temperatures has been identified as a limiting factor for Woodland Voles. Current threats are thought to include: urban development, agricultural intensification, and forest harvesting. The objective of this management plan is to maintain, and where feasible increase, its current distribution in Canada through the maintenance of habitat and reduction of threats and, where possible improve knowledge on distribution and biological needs (e.g. habitat requirements) of the species in Canada. Broad strategies to help achieve this management objective are outlined in Section 6.2 of this document and the conservation measures and implementation schedule are presented in Section 6.3. Conservation of the Woodland Vole is also likely to benefit the environment, including a number of species at risk in Ontario and Quebec (Appendix A).

Book excerpt: Meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus), pine voles (M. pinetorum), and montane voles (M. montanus) cause significant economic damage in apple orchards throughout the eastern United States and in a few northwestern states where apples are grown commercially. By girdling the bark and roots, these rodents kill trees, reduce yields, and prolong the time for new plantings to come into production. We describe the identification, ecology, and behavior of voles in apple orchards, evaluate the types, extent, and magnitude of losses inflicted by these pests, and describe measures for reducing damage. cost-effective reduction. Proper selection, timing, and application is essential for obtaining best results with rodenticides.

This action plan summarizes the rodent fauna of North America and provides available information on every rodent taxon that has been considered to be of conservation concern by state, provincial and private conservation agencies and regional experts. It is hoped that the survey provided in this action plan will serve as a common ground for all these parties in drawing up conservation strategies for rodents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known as the “Father of the Outdoor Movement,” William HH Murray’s writings have been appreciated by generations of readers looking to nature as an escape from our daily lives as well as a portal to our past, perhaps none more so than his classic Adventures in the Wilderness: Or, Camp-Life in the Adirondacks. Published in 1869 and widely hailed as the first book on recreational camping ever published in America, this groundbreaking resource informed readers how to live in the woods: what equipment to bring, where to set up camp, how to cook, fish, and hunt, and most importantly insights on the profound connections to be made between humankind and the outdoor world around us. Besides introducing readers to the great outdoors, the book would go on to lay the foundation for the conservation movement. With a Foreword by Laura Rice, the Chief Curator of the Adirondack Experience Museum, this edition of Adventures in the Wilderness revisits Murray’s timeless tips and stories of north country camping with modern-day context and clarity, showing that the profound power of nature has only grown.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From reviews of previous editions: “This is the standard reference about Texas mammals.” —Wildlife Activist “A must for anyone seriously interested in the wildlife of Texas.” —Texas Outdoor Writers Association News “[This book] easily fills the role of both a field guide and a desk reference, and is written in a style that appeals to the professional biologist and amateur naturalist alike. . . . [It] should prove useful to anyone with an interest in the mammal fauna of Texas or the southern Great Plains.” —Prairie Naturalist The Mammals of Texas has been the standard reference since the first edition was coauthored by William B. Davis and Walter P. Taylor in 1947. Revised several times over the succeeding decades, it remains the most authoritative source of information on the mammalian wildlife of Texas, with physical descriptions and life histories for 202 species, abundant photographs and drawings, and distribution maps. In this new edition, David J. Schmidly is joined by one of the most active researchers on Texas mammals, Robert D. Bradley, to provide a thorough update of the taxonomy, distribution, and natural history of all species of wild mammals that inhabit Texas today. Using the most recent advances in molecular biology and in wildlife ecology and management, the authors include the most current information about the scientific nomenclature, taxonomy, and identification of species, while also covering significant advances in natural history and conservation.
