Book excerpt: In this study, we use a survey instrument to obtain perspectives from over 700 auditors about present-day audit workloads and the relationship between audit workloads, audit quality, and job satisfaction. Our findings indicate that auditors are working, on average, five hours per week above the threshold at which they believe audit quality begins to deteriorate and often 20 hours above this threshold at the peak of busy season. Survey respondents perceive deadlines and staffing shortages as two of the primary reasons for high workloads and further believe that high workloads result in decreased audit quality via compromised audit procedures, impaired audit judgment, and difficulty retaining staff with appropriate knowledge and skills. We also find that auditors' job satisfaction and their excitement about auditing as a career are negatively impacted by high audit workload, particularly when the workload exceeds a threshold that is perceived to impair audit quality. Overall, our findings provide support for the PCAOB's recent concern that heavy workloads are continuing to threaten audit quality, and suggest that the primary drivers of workload (i.e., deadlines and staffing problems) might be the actual “root cause” of workload-related audit deficiencies.

Book excerpt: This paper tests two related hypotheses regarding the effects of management advisory services (MAS) on earnings ? stock returns relationship. The first hypothesis predicts that the earnings explanatory power for returns is weaker for firms that receive MAS from the external auditors than those firms that do not. This hypothesis is based on the concept of auditor independence which suggests that the provision of MAS by external auditors is expected to adversely affect the credibility and informativeness of audited accounting earnings. The second hypothesis predicts that the adverse effects of MAS on the correlation between earnings and stock returns for firms will be stronger for non-Big 6 auditees than for Big 6 auditees. The second hypothesis is based on the audit quality theory which suggests that Big 6 auditors provide higher quality audits and are expected to mitigate the adverse effects of MAS. Results using data from listed Australian companies provide evidence to support both hypotheses. These findings suggest that concerns regarding investor perceptions of auditor objectivity and independence as a result of the provision of MAS are warranted in specific circumstances.

The first goal of Jonas Tritschler is to develop an audit quality metric on national audit firm level. Financial reporting errors, as detected by the German enforcement institutions during examinations, which subsequently are published in the German Federal Gazette by the involved companies, are the data basis for this measurement. Using the developed audit quality metric, the second goal of this study is to analyze audit quality differences of selected audit firms by comparing their deployed audit input factors such as employee’s competence (ratio of certified professionals to total audit staff), experience of employees (average tenure of employees in years) and client-specific experience (client fluctuation rate). Results indicate a correlation between audit quality according to the developed metric and the operationalized audit input factors mentioned above.

Book excerpt: Regulators worldwide have recently proposed expanding the auditor's report in a number of ways, with investors showing particular interest in additional information surrounding management estimates. This study uses an experiment to examine the effects of auditor-provided estimate disclosures on financial statement users' perceptions of auditor independence, management credibility, reporting quality, and investment decisions. I manipulate auditor agreement with management's estimates and whether the estimates are incentive-consistent for management. I find that estimate disclosures are value-relevant for users' investment decisions. Additionally, given an unqualified opinion, users view auditors as more (less) independent when auditors agree (disagree) with management and management as less (more) credible when estimates are incentive consistent (inconsistent). In turn, independence and credibility perceptions influence perceived misstatement probability, financial reporting quality, and investment. The findings empirically support investors' arguments that auditor disclosures regarding management estimates increase the transparency and value-relevance of the audit report.
