Book excerpt: Plant parasitic nematodes are costly burdens of crop production, causing an estimated US$80 - 118 billion per year in damage to crops. They are associated with nearly every important agricultural crop, and are a significant constraint on global food security. Regulations on the use of chemical pesticides have resulted in growing interest in alternative methods of nematode control. Future changes in climate, cropping systems, food habits, as well as social and environmental factors also affect the options for nematode control. Taking a systematic crop by crop approach, this book: Outlines the economic importance of specific plant parasitic nematode problems on the major food and industrial crops. Presents the state-of-the-art management strategies that have been developed to reduce specific nematode impacts, and outlines their limitations. Contains case studies to illustrate impact in the field. Aims to anticipate future changes in nematode disease pressure that might develop as a result of climate change, and new cropping systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights recent advances in the field of plant-biotic interactions and explores current serious issues in the crop production industry. It is intended to attract more attention to these important, but often overlooked areas, and to stimulate new ideas for future research. Plants are constantly under attack by pathogens, pests, and parasites, which can significantly impact worldwide food production and human health. While pathogens and pests attack and interconnect with their hosts in a variety of ways, plants have developed sophisticated immune systems to fight infections. In the field of plant-biotic interactions, most of the studies to date have focused on the function and signaling pathways of plant disease resistance proteins and pattern recognition receptors, as well as pathogen effector proteins. In contrast, this book presents new and emerging research areas, and introduces students, researchers, academics, and policy advisors to the latest trends in e.g. microbial technology, environmental microbiology, agricultural science, the health sciences, biological sciences and other related disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant-parasitic nematodes are a major threat to crop production in all countries, and identification of nematodes and knowledge of their biology is of paramount importance. Providing a broad introduction to nematodes as plant parasites, this book begins by describing nematodes by genera, and then builds on this foundation to detail nematode biology and pest management, including resistance, and biological and chemical control. This 3rd edition is updated to address advances in our knowledge of plant-parasitic nematodes, particularly concerning the molecular aspects of host-parasite relationships, including the application of genomics to nematode biology. Changes in control and management strategies are also covered. The influence of climate change on plant-parasitic nematodes is addressed in a new chapter on ecology. Primarily aimed at students (MSc and PhD), this book is also invaluable for researchers and lecturers in nematology, plant pathology and parasitology, advisory and quarantine services, and crop protection scientists.

Book excerpt: Apart from high cost, increased concern for environmental and health hazards has called for a reduction in the use of synthetic nematicides for nematode control. In vitro studies in Petri dishes showed that castor bean extracts had toxic effect on eggs and juveniles of root knot nematodes. Egg hatch inhibition and juvenile mortality decrease with increased dilution of the extract. With an increase in exposure time, juvenile mortality increased.Trials were conducted to observe the effect of the extract on root-knot nematode and some growth parameters of tomato plant in pot. Seedlings either dipped, side-drenched or a combination of both with different concentrations of castor bean extracts showed that plant height, stem girth, fresh shoot and root weights of extract-treated plants were significantly different from those of the control plants. Numbers of root-knot juveniles and galls on the roots of the extract-treated plants were significantly different from those of the control. The crude castor bean extract was nematotoxic to root-knot nematodes in vitro and potted tomato. This study should help shed light on the use of botanicals in managing plant parasitic nematodes on vegetables.

Book excerpt: Management of Root-knot Nematode Using Entomopathogenic Nematodes: Biological control of insect pests using entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN s) has gained popularity world over in recent past as they have long term effect against target pests without any adverse effect on non-target organisms. These are potential bioagents, highly virulent, have broader host range and can bring out quick kill of the target pests. Preliminary studies have shown that EPN s are equally pathogenic to plant parasitic nematodes also. The results obtained from series of experiments conducted to find out the effect of EPN s on root knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) showed that these are effective in suppressing root knot population infecting tomato significantly.

Book excerpt: The most common soil-borne problems necessitating Methyl Bromide fumigation are nematodes, fungal diseases such as Fusarium and Verticillium wilt and weeds. However, nematodes are by far farmers' fiercest enemies. Among a variety of plant parasitic nematode species, Meloidogyne incognita (also referred to as Southern root-knot nematode) is the most wide-spread and ravaging. Due to the impending phase out of Methyl Bromide, finding alternative nematode management option has become an imperative necessity. While most chemical nematicides are either less effective, or too expensive and associated with a negative impact on the environment and public health, biofumigation crops present a great potential to replace methyl bromide for soil treatment with adequate nematode control at reasonable costs.
