Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Environment and Health Atlas for England and Wales is an authoritative collection of over 80 full colour maps showing geographic patterns of common environmental exposures and diseases of public health importance, along with interpretive text, which gives an analysis of mortality, cancer incidences and other health data in England and Wales. Each chapter provides an overview of the evidence on potential health impacts of environmental agents, particularly how they might relate to the geographical variations in disease risk. The health maps show recent time trends within England and Wales and, where available, comparative maps of Europe and the world, and provides summary statistics for the data presented. This information is also discussed in the context of other risk factors. The Environment and Health Atlas for England and Wales informs policy-makers and the public on the geographic patterns of disease and potential exposure to various pollutants, and assists in developing hypotheses and research into the reasons for variability in disease risk that may relate to environmental exposures. It is essential reading for public health professionals and academics from within the field of public health, epidemiology, health geography and statistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Hazards in the British Isles (1981) offers a comprehensive account of the various hazards affecting Britain. Based on a wealth of empirical data, it provides a balanced perspective on phenomena that are usually presented in a sensational way by the media and then quickly forgotten. A three-fold methodology is suggested for the study of environmental hazards, which concentrates on their incidence, their causes and their frequency, and their impact on both the individual and society as a whole.

Book Synopsis Human Frontiers, Environments and Disease by : Tony McMichael
Download or read book Human Frontiers, Environments and Disease written by Tony McMichael and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-06-28 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling account charts the relentless trajectory of humankind, and its changing survival and disease patterns, across place and time from when our ancient ancestors roamed the African Savannah to today's populous, industrialised, globalising world. This expansion of human frontiers - geographic, climatic, cultural and technological - has encountered frequent setbacks from disease, famine and dwindling resources. The social and environmental transformations wrought by agrarianism, industrialisation, fertility control, social modernisation, urbanisation and mass consumption have profoundly affected patterns of health and disease. Today, as life expectancies rise, the planet's ecosystems are being damaged by the combined weight of population size and intensive economic activity. Global warming, stratospheric ozone depletion and loss of biodiversity pose large-scale hazards to human health and survival. Recognising this, can we achieve a transition to sustainability? This and other profound questions underlie this chronicle of expansive human activity, social change, environmental impact and their health consequences.
Book Synopsis The Identification of Man-made Environmental Hazards to Health by : M. E. McDowall
Download or read book The Identification of Man-made Environmental Hazards to Health written by M. E. McDowall and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental hazards to health are a matter of growing concern which is reflected in the amount of public debate about such issues as lead in petrol, dumping of nuclear waste and chemical tips. The identification of hazards is a huge problem for the medical services. This book summarises those hazards which are already identified, then shows how health workers can decide whether they have a statistically significant incidence of disease and how they can seek to establish causal relationships between particular hazards and diseases. The large number of areas where causal relationships are difficult to prove highlights the need for health workers to be aware of the type of methods outlined in this book.

Book Synopsis Britain 1740 – 1950 by : Richard Lawton
Download or read book Britain 1740 – 1950 written by Richard Lawton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-02 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1992, this book provides students with a well-illustrated, clearly written text which offers a coherent overview of Britain’s development from a pre-modern to a modern economy and society. The key processes that have shaped the geography of modern Britain are rooted in the significant demographic, economic, technological and social transitions of the early eighteenth century, the impact of which was not fully diffused through the nation until the mid-20th Century. This country-wide survey examines the nature of this transformation. The material in the book is accessible because the book is clearly structured into 3 phases: 1740 to the 1830s; the 1830s to the 1890s and the 1890s to 1950. For each period, the principal aspects of change in population, industry, the countryside and urban life are examined, and regional examples given to support the analysis.

They have presented peculiar problems both to the state and to the society. The colonial India in general and the Punjab in particular were affected intermittently by epidemics. The Punjab was one of the worst affected provinces of the colonial India in which several lakhs of people fell prey to the deadly epidemics. Punjab was the wheat basket of the British empire and the leading recruitment centre for military service in British Indian army. Due to its strategic and military importance, the British handled the epidemics with great vigour. However, in their attempt to contain the epidemic, the British impinged on the privacy and religious susceptibilites of the natives. The present work discusses the role of the state in handling the epidemics and the response of the society to such measures. Sasha: The author is currently working as an Assistant Professor at Panjab University, Chandigah. She did her doctorate in the faculty of Arts under UGC fellowship from the Panjab University. She has to her credit several publications both in international and national journals on the issues of health, medicine and society in the colonial period.
