Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The zoning arrangement of the Bridger Middle Eocene as defined by W.D. Matthew in his 1909 monograph on the Carnivora and Insectivora of the Bridger Basin included a series of stratigraphic units lettered from A to E. The type section is in the western part of the basin but correlation of the sequence in the eastern part of the basin erred in that a very large area shown by Matthew as C, or upper Bridger, is actually B, or lower Bridger. As a consequence many of the mammalian remains collected in the eastern part of the basin were attributed to the wrong horizon. This was discovered in my faunal studies and verified by Wilmot Bradley's mapping of the Sage Creek White Layer, which is the base of Bridger C or upper Bridger. A faunal list of the Mammalia recognized in the Bridger is given with type localities and their horizons, so far as known, and the number of specimens in the National Museum of Natural History collections from each of the two divisions, lower and upper. Following this a discussion of species is given in which the evidence for any species being restricted to one or the other of the stratigraphic divisions is cited, or such information demonstrating its occurrence in both levels, if this is not indicated by the National Museum of Natural History collections (under the catalog numbers of the old United States National Museum). The Annotated Bibliography includes references to all papers in which recognized new mammalian families, genera, and species included in the Bridger faunas are described. Also included are papers in which stratigraphic and additional or detailed information on Bridger mammals is provided, with notations as to extent of coverage, and possible errors of detail or interpretation in certain cases.

Book Synopsis Evolution of Tertiary Mammals of North America: Volume 1, Terrestrial Carnivores, Ungulates, and Ungulate Like Mammals by : Christine M. Janis
Download or read book Evolution of Tertiary Mammals of North America: Volume 1, Terrestrial Carnivores, Ungulates, and Ungulate Like Mammals written by Christine M. Janis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-05-28 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed as a source and reference for people interested in the history and fossil record of North American tertiary mammals. Each chapter covers a different family or order, and includes information on anatomical features, systematics, the distribution of the genera and species at different fossil localities, and a discussion of their paleobiology. Many of these groups have never been covered in this fashion before.
Book Synopsis Eocene Biodiversity by : Gregg F. Gunnell
Download or read book Eocene Biodiversity written by Gregg F. Gunnell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Initially, this work was designed to document and study the diversification of modern mammalian groups and was quite successful and satisfying. However, as field and laboratory work continued, there began to develop a suspicion that not all of the Eocene story was being told. It became apparent that most fossil samples, especially those from the American West, were derived from similar preservational circumstances and similar depositional settings. A program was initiated to look for other potential sources of fossil samples, either from non-traditional lithologies or from geographic areas that were not typically sampled. As this program of research grew it began to demonstrate that different lithologies and different geographic areas told different stories from those that had been developed based on more typical faunal assemblages. This book is conceived as an introduction to non-traditional Eocene fossils samples, and as a place to document and discuss features of these fossil assemblages that are rare or that come from rarely represented habitats.
Book Synopsis Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic Mammals of North America by : Michael O. Woodburne
Download or read book Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic Mammals of North America written by Michael O. Woodburne and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2004-04-21 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book places into modern context the information by which North American mammalian paleontologists recognize, divide, calibrate, and discuss intervals of mammalian evolution known as North American Land Mammal Ages. It incorporates new information on the systematic biology of the fossil record and utilizes the many recent advances in geochronologic methods and their results. The book describes the increasingly highly resolved stratigraphy into which all available temporally significant data and applications are integrated. Extensive temporal coverage includes the Lancian part of the Late Cretaceous, and geographical coverage includes information from Mexico, an integral part of the North American fauna, past and present.

Book Synopsis Vertebrate Paleontology in Utah by : David D. Gillette
Download or read book Vertebrate Paleontology in Utah written by David D. Gillette and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 1999 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 52 papers in this vary in content from summaries or state-of-knowledge treatments, to detailed contributions that describe new species. Although the distinction is subtle, the title (Vertebrate Paleontology in Utah) indicates the science of paleontology in the state of Utah, rather than the even more ambitious intent if it were given the title “Vertebrate Paleontology of Utah” which would promise an encyclopedic treatment of the subject. The science of vertebrate paleontology in Utah is robust and intense. It has grown prodigiously in the past decade, and promises to continue to grow indefinitely. This research benefits everyone in the state, through Utah’s muse ums and educational institutions, which are the direct beneficiaries.
