Book excerpt: Mama Never Cried is the extraordinary story of an ordinary woman; a Mama who simply did what Mamas do. When her world and her dream laid in ruins, pulled down by one she loved, and she stood as the only barrier between her five young boys and an uncertain future, she put aside concerns for her self and became their rock. When the abyss of despair beckoned, she offered them the lifeline of hope. When their hearts might have grown bitter with thoughts of hate and anger and vengeance, she taught them the solace of forgiveness, and when the road ahead laid hidden by clouds of doubt and dread, she whispered “Come with me” and promised that somewhere behind the mists there was a rainbow.

Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the indie rock sensation known as Japanese Breakfast, an unforgettable memoir about family, food, grief, love, and growing up Korean American—“in losing her mother and cooking to bring her back to life, Zauner became herself” (NPR). • CELEBRATING OVER ONE YEAR ON THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular, high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food. As she grew up, moving to the East Coast for college, finding work in the restaurant industry, and performing gigs with her fledgling band--and meeting the man who would become her husband--her Koreanness began to feel ever more distant, even as she found the life she wanted to live. It was her mother's diagnosis of terminal cancer, when Michelle was twenty-five, that forced a reckoning with her identity and brought her to reclaim the gifts of taste, language, and history her mother had given her. Vivacious and plainspoken, lyrical and honest, Zauner's voice is as radiantly alive on the page as it is onstage. Rich with intimate anecdotes that will resonate widely, and complete with family photos, Crying in H Mart is a book to cherish, share, and reread.

Book excerpt: A woman spills the story of her life to a bar full of strangers, in the acerbic first novel from Laura Adamczyk. Anything can become the story of your life if you let it, and I suppose this became mine. In Island City, a wry, wistful woman, estranged from her family, sells her belongings and moves back to her hometown in the Midwest. To her, it’s the “perfect place to give up.” She wants to get rid of everything—her stuff, her ambitions. Before making a “messy exit,” she holes up in a dark bar and tells her stories to an audience of indifferent strangers. There’s the time the river dried up and you could walk across its bed; the day her sister got clobbered at the nursing home; when her dad got cancer, then Alzheimer’s, then cancer again. Now she’s forgetting things the way he did, words slipping away. That third drink isn’t helping. Laura Adamczyk, whose writing is “super weird” and “super unsettling” (Eugenia Williamson, The Boston Globe), creates a full portrait of a person, even as the image blurs and fades. Delivered as a booze-soaked monologue, Island City is a funny, devastating first novel, one that bristles and burns with true feeling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two people have written this book. The first person was the child who was still hurting, who hadn’t reconciled the past with the present, who didn’t want to be what she was. The other is the adult who has faced her demon and laid it to rest for once and for all. This story moves along like a yo-yo, up and down, forward and back. It is a mishmash of what was begone with all these other voices added which I, the obedient, eager to please, whatever I am... frustrated artist, dutiful daughter, obsessive/compulsive housekeeper, possible lunatic, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, or tired old lady, am slowly working my way through the pages... the painful for me, and probably boring for you, story of my life. I suppose there will be those who will fault me for writing this book. Blacks will think, “What has she got to cry about? She could have passed if she’d wanted to.” Whites will think whatever I got I deserved for being deceitful, for hiding my ancestry behind a white facade (as if I could help it). I can relate to both points of view. If this book should be published, some people my age who read it may say, “That’s not the way I remember those times,” or “That wasn’t the way I was taught in my school.” This could very well be. I’ve written about my time and place. These are my memories of the way things were in Coronado, California, from 1924, when I was three years old until I moved away in 1940 when I was nineteen and of things that I experienced after that. The original draft of this story ended with my suicide.

Book excerpt: Evita Bezuidenhout might be the most famous white woman in South Africa, but her younger sister Bambi, the blonde Afrikaans girl who married a Nazi and became a stripper in the fleshpots of Europe, has a much juicier story to tell. In her autobiography, assisted by Pieter-Dirk Uys, Bambi traces her journey from the Orange Free State to Europe, South America, the USA and back to a democratic South Africa. On the way she gives haircuts to The Beatles in Hamburg, travels with Hemingway in Spain, and gets surgical tips from Chris Barnard. She also rubs shoulders with Ava Gardner and Marlene Dietrich, sups with Paraguay’s dictator General Stroessner, and of course confronts her sister Evita. Peopled with showgirls, divas and film stars, Nazis, assassins and secret agents, Never too Naked is an outrageous and hilarious tale.

Book excerpt: The Third Book of Joy: Chain Dance is the second notebook of family lore, the collection of Joy's magical stories about her enslaved ancestors, researched by Professor Bo Wolfson in Burning Streams; the first notebook was published in Blood of Angels. When Heaven's heartbroken death in childbirth and Whip Man's torture at her father's hands lead her to resurrect herself as a death dancer, magic and terror drive the plantation's owner off of his land. Most of the men and women who labor on the haunted plantation flee, following Heaven's brother to his Louisiana swampland. But not everyone runs. A winged angel, a dancing coven of witches, a shapeshifting wildcat, and a ferocious pack of werewolves defend Solace's plantation from attack. Marauding patrollers and opportunists clash with the cunning, the blood thirst, and the supernatural powers unleashed by women determined to free themselves and the men and children they love.

Book excerpt: The lasting charm of Kaufman’s stories lies in a delightful mix of personal incidents and observations set against an anchoring backdrop of cultural tradition. His new collection is filled with tales from his parents’ homeland in the Ukraine, his own childhood reminiscences, and his adult travels. We watch the young author forced alongside “every Jewish boy on the block” to emulate Yehudi Menuhin on a ten-dollar violin with a moldy bow until the boy is spared by an innate lack of talent and his father’s judgment of his concert: “Enough is enough is more than enough.” Kaufman is carefully attuned to the awkwardness of adulthood as well as to that of early adolescence. In “Interlude in Bangkok,” his narrator scours the city for a synagogue while pursued by a prostitute. Later he and a friend encounter Greta Garbo in a museum café and are too frightened to approach her. Aware of their intrigue, the mysterious movie star intones, “I am not she”; Kaufman, in his own way, says that of himself in these stories through an autobiographical narrator whose memories take on resonant, literary shapes in their retelling.

Why must there be a place called Home? Why is there, somewhere in each human soul, a void that can be filled only by remembrance of that special place? In Broadmoor, four aging brothers, seeking answers and guided by memory, take you with them on a journey back to their childhood, back to poverty and hard times, to betrayal and desertion, and to years of back-breaking labor and struggle to survive. As you follow, you will meet a loving but imperfect family, faithful friends, a few men and women of great honor, and a mother whose character and strength and devotion surpasses all. You will laugh and sometimes cry and, in the end, you will find, as the brothers did, that home is where memory begins and ends; the place where, when all is done, a heart can find sanctuary and certitude and safety and peace. And you will find that, for these brothers, home is a place called Broadmoor.

Book excerpt: As a replacement child, William Noble was born to replace a little boy who died twenty-six years before - just before another pandemic. Born in July 1909, Little William lived for only five years—yet his short life continued to have consequences long after his death for those he knew and for those he was never to know. Now the author, who shares the same birthday with the other William, lives to tell the story. In a collection of mostly autobiographical short stories covering a timeframe from 1914 through 1958, the writer shares insight into the lives of those who surrounded Little William before and after his untimely death to illustrate the lasting and intergenerational impact of suffering and death, especially when the death is not grieved. As he invites others into his life experiences from birth until age eighteen while living in Vienna, Georgia, the writer shines a light on family dynamics, his personal story, and the diverse characters who influenced his life and views. Love Lifted Me is a collection of short stories addressing the mysterious origin of identity as located in inheritance, experience, and context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a nineteenth-century Britain where magecraft has directed the course of history, a ruthless conspiracy plots intrigue, treason, and murder. Only a pair of brilliant misfits suspect anything is wrong. And to avert disaster, they’ll have to solve a royal mystery more than a decade cold. As the term at Oxford’s Merlin College ends, shy, bookish Gray Marshall accompanies his tutor to the country with nowhere else to go. A misadventure has left him in disgrace with his friends and—temporarily?—without magick. He overheard what sounded like a plan to murder the Master of Merlin. But he has no way to investigate his suspicions, and no one to trust. Until his professor’s odd, neglected middle daughter, Sophie, befriends him, and he realizes there is far more to her than meets the eye. According to her father, Sophie’s dreams of education are unsuitable to a woman. So her midnight library excursions to learn despite him have left her with subtle skills in gathering information, plenty of daring, and even more frustration. As Sophie and Gray begin to guess the aims of the conspirators, they know they must act. But for any chance at justice, they must risk all they have—and change who they are to each other forever... Praise for The Midnight Queen: “Debut novelist Sylvia Izzo Hunter renders both the setting and characters in vivid detail. The structured system of magick gives the fictional world weight, and Hunter manipulates the seemingly disparate plot elements to create tension that culminates in a satisfying conclusion.” — Shelf Awareness “Hunter pulls from a multitude of mystical tales and myths to create her own magical version of Britain that is both innovative and intriguing. ... The Midnight Queen is a novel that readers will be unable to put down.” — RT Book Reviews “The Midnight Queen is a love story that will warm your heart, and a story of magic and struggle, truth and might, in the face of all odds, with some stunning writing that will really hook readers and brings them into the colorful world that Hunter has created.”—Bookworm Blues “Hunter does a splendid job of confounding my expectations ... A fresh and inventive historical novel ... I can’t wait to see what Sylvia Izzo Hunter does next.” — Marie Brennan, author of A Natural History of Dragons “Elegantly written, fast-paced and highly original – a stunning story of magic, scholarship, and true love. Sylvia Izzo Hunter brings both rural Brittany and an alternative Regency England to vivid life. A remarkably assured debut.” — Juliet Marillier, national bestselling author of the Sevenwaters novels

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in Erob, Alabama, Nina "Little Bit" Barnes Enloe lived in the shadow of her imposing and harsh grandmother, Nina "Biggie" Barnes Enloe. If she wasn't being bossed around by Biggie, then the task fell to her best friend Win...who did win. At everything. Bit never seemed to share Win's lifetime supply of “lucky dust.” Perhaps the only thing Bit has ever chosen for herself is her friendship with Avery, the out-of-towner who showed up on the saddest day of her life—unpretentious and decidedly un-Southern—with a funeral casserole in hand. Bit believes she can escape her grandmother’s controlling grip once and for all by moving somewhere where she is the only Nina Enloe listed: New York. Yet her world is turned upside down when an unexpected loss forces her to leave her new life in the city and return to Erob, where she must face everything—and everyone—she left behind. In the process, Bit discovers her true identity, learns the hard lessons of acceptance and forgiveness, finds herself falling in love in unexpected places, and finds comfort in the secrets of rainy days. Leslie Hooton, author of Before Anyone Else, brings her signature wit and Southern charm to the page again in this triumphant coming-of-age story.
