Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of African American male former community college student-athletes who succeeded on their educational pathway. The study also sought to identify the supportive services African American male former student-athletes reported as contributing to their academic success. For the purpose of this study, educational pathway success meant the student earned either a certificate, an associate degree, or transferred to a four-year educational institution. Tinto's theory of retention served as the study's theoretical framework. A qualitative methodological approach was used involving a set of 11 interview questions with 16 African American male student-athletes, all of whom graduated from Michigan community colleges. Community colleges were chosen because the literature review showed high percentages of African American male student-athletes enrolled in community colleges are a vastly understudied population. Nine themes emerged from the analysis of the data. The data revealed the academic barriers participants endured while enrolled in community college, and the influence of family, teammates, coaches, faculty, and staff on their academic success. It is believed that, by understanding those factors that most influence an African American male student-athletes success in community college, both administrators and others who have a stake in this population's understand the persistence that leads to the participants' completion. Future research might include interviews with both student-athletes, coaches, and academic advisors. Further, a study that employs a mixed-methods approach may be conducted to provide more additional information pertaining to factors of success and perceptions of belonging within this important and unique population.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to conduct exploratory qualitative research into the perceptions of engagement among Black male football student-athletes at a Midwest university. The researcher used a qualitative single case study method. This study consisted of two research questions: How do Black male football student-athletes make meaning of campus engagement and how do they engage with their university? What are the perceptions of Black male football student-athletes regarding the factors that contributed to engagement of purposeful activities at a Midwest university? The participants in this study were Black male football players who attended and played college football at a Midwest university. This study of Black male football student-athletes' experiences is vital to coaches, educators, advisors, and administrators who are concerned with understanding how to better engage Black male football student-athletes at a Midwest university. Ages of participants ranged from 18-24 and were self-identified as Black male football student-athletes through a questionnaire. Participants participated in one-hour face-to-face interviews. Data were coded and analyzed into categories to establish credibility and dependability. The themes that emerged were Time Management, Social Involvement, Expectations, Experience and Engagement. Results from this study provided evidence on the perception of engagement for Black male football student-athletes, how they make meaning of campus engagement, and how they engage with their university. The findings revealed the university's campus activities helped them engage more in purposeful activities. Based on the findings, Black male football student-athletes encountered struggles with not having enough purposeful campus activities to engage in while pursuing their college education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Student-athletes' academic and athletic roles both require commitment, time, energy, and effort. Managing and balancing these multiple roles not only impacts student-athletes' use of time, but also their overall college experience. The purpose of this study was to explore how collegiate student-athletes perceive their academic and athletic roles. This study gives voice to student-athletes' perceptions of their multiple roles, provides insight on how they navigate these roles, and examines the intersections between athletic role, academic motivation, choice of major, and career decision-making processes. Qualitative interviews were conducted employing the constant comparative analytic method as a means to gain a meaningful understanding of how student-athletes perceive and experience their multiple roles. The study sample contained 18 (eight female and 10 male) student-athletes at Sunny Hills University (shu), a large 4-year public university in Southern California. A purposeful sample technique was employed resulting in participants being either sophomore, junior, or seniors on the following shu teams: Baseball, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Men's Golf, Women's Golf, Men's Outdoor Track, and Women's Outdoor Track. Five overarching themes emerged from the data regarding how student-athletes perceive their academic and athletic roles: (1) Two interconnected roles; (2) Part of an elite group; (3) Athletic role is more reinforced than academic role; (4) Sensitivity to stereotypes; and (5) Career decisions: a backseat to athletics. Implications for developing a theoretical or conceptual understanding of how Role Theory and in particular role conflict, affects student-athlete and how participants' viewed their academic and athletic roles as interconnected are also highlighted. Recommendations are provided for the ncaa, academic counselors, Athletic Departments, coaches, and faculty members with the goal of encouraging these different constituencies to understand areas where their behaviors could change in order to assist student-athletes with managing the multiple responsibilities, demands, and expectations of their role.
