Book excerpt: Malaysian-born M. Bakri Musa, a California surgeon, is a columnist for Malaysiakini.com and a contributor to Malaysia-Today.net. His credits have appeared in the Far Eastern Economic Review, International Herald Tribune, and Education Quarterly. His commentary has also aired on National Public Radio's Marketplace. This second volume follows the pattern of the first, Seeing Malaysia My Way, and carries the writer's commentaries from 2004 to 2007, a look at Malaysia under the leadership of Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi. It is both reflective and prescriptive. Malaysia is generously blessed with many favorable attributes. Properly harnessed they would propel Malaysians to be among the developed and prosperous. Instead, the nation is today mired in endless crises, its leadership hopelessly distracted, and citizens dangerously polarized. Malaysian institutions, once the envy of the region, are today irreparably damaged through the twin blights of corruption and incompetence. These essays are a critical look at the leadership of Abdullah Badawi, and his management of these crucial issues facing Malaysia. The writer does not spare Abdullah's many enablers in his cabinet, party, academia, and mainstream media and others who still insist that the country is on the right track. Bakri Musa offers his prescription on improving education, tackling corruption, and weaning off the subsidy mentality, adopting the best practices elsewhere and adapting them to the specific needs and problems of Malaysia. In highlighting the achievements of the past, the writer points to the potential the country is capable of achieving.

Book excerpt: English in Malaysia: Current Use and Status offers an account of the English language used in present-day West and East Malaysia and its status anchored in different linguistic, social and educational domains. After an Introduction giving a bird’s eye view of the status of English in Malaysia, the eight main chapters offer case studies revolving around four themes: i. linguistic features, with special focus on pronunciation and language contact; ii. language attitudes; iii. English in on-line discourse; and iv. English and language policies. The chapters cover original data and topics, seeking to draw an accurate portrait of Malaysian English, a non-native variety of postcolonial English that is currently developing its pronunciation, grammar, lexis and distinct identity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SUARAM’s Annual Human Rights Report on Malaysia is widely recognized as the most objective, comprehensive and dependable source of information on the state of human rights in Malaysia. It documents the human rights violations as well as the struggles of human rights defenders that take place in Malaysia during the year. As a beleaguered government tried to deflect international criticisms of the 1MDB scandal throughout 2016, human rights violations have continued. Detention without trial remained an area of concern while police shootings saw an alarming increase. Freedom of expression was seriously constrained while the freedom of assembly has been usurped by neo-fascist groups with state connivance. The freedom of movement of some Malaysians has been taken away on federal and state government orders while the freedom of religion was under threat by a private member’s bill on hudud in parliament. Meanwhile, free and fair elections are seriously threatened by an on-going re-delineation exercise that reeks of gerrymandering and malapportionment. The LGBTIQ community remain under siege and harassment by state religious authorities, the indigenous peoples still suffer infringement of their native customary lands by state-sanctioned loggers while refugees and asylum seekers still live under threat of harassment by enforcement agencies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the four decades or so since its invention, the internet has become pivotal to how many societies function, influencing how individual citizens interact with and respond to their governments. Within Southeast Asia, while most governments subscribe to the belief that new media technological advancement improves their nation’s socio-economic conditions, they also worry about its cultural and political effects. This book examines how this set of dynamics operates through its study of new media in contemporary Malaysian society. Using the social imaginary framework and adopting a socio-historical approach, the book explains the varied understandings of new media as a continuing process wherein individuals and their societies operate in tandem to create, negotiate and enact the meaning ascribed to concepts and ideas. In doing so, it also highlights the importance of non-users to national technological policies. Through its examination of the ideation and development of Malaysia’s Multimedia Super Corridor mega project to-date and reference to the seminal socio-political events of 2007-2012 including the 2008 General Elections, Bersih and Hindraf rallies, this book provides a clear explanation for new media’s prominence in the multi-ethnic and majority Islamic society of Malaysia today. It is of interest to academics working in the field of Media and Internet Studies and Southeast Asian Politics.

Book excerpt: Rethinking Malaysia collects together the writings of Tajuddin Rasdi in a period of political change and turmoil in the aftermath Malaysia’s 14th General Election. A time of hope and renewal, as well as of increasing conservatism and extremism, Rethinking Malaysia features Tajuddin Rasdi’s personal and honest musings about issues of religion, politics and education in relation to Malaysia’s ongoing project of nation-building. Reacting to events such as the anti-ICERD rally, the Zakir Naik controversy, the education reforms of the Pakatan Harapan government, and the worsening of relations between East and West Malaysia, Rethinking Malaysia is Tajuddin Rasdi’s call for a process of nation-building which is inclusive of all races, religions and regions and which produces a meaningful Malaysian identity, as well as a call for all religions to work together to produce a more prosperous, just and inclusive nation for future generations.

Book excerpt: The 2018 Malaysian General Election will stand as a major defining event in Malaysian history, when the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition unexpectedly lost power in the country they had ruled for over half a century. This volume brings together scholars who assess one fundamental factor that brought about this game-changing event in Malaysian politics: intra-elite feuding in the leading Malay-based political parties. This study provides an analysis of individual state politics as well as national trends shaped by the actions of leaders in government and the opposition. An indispensable guide for scholars studying the politics of Malaysia and of Southeast Asia more broadly, it will be of great interest for all readers with an interest in Malaysian politics.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the impact of the Internet on Malaysian politics and how it has played a pivotal role in influencing the country’s political climate. It lays out the background of Malaysia’s political history and media environment, and addresses the ramifications of media-isation for the political process, including political public relations, advertising and online campaigns. The book examines the Internet’s transformative role and effect on Malaysian democracy, as well as its consequences for political actors and the citizenry, such as the development of cyber-warfare, and the rise of propaganda or “fake” news in the online domain. It also investigates the interplay between traditional and new media with regard to the evolution of politics in Malaysia, especially as a watchdog on accountability and transparency, and contributes to the current discourse on the climate of Malaysian politics following the rise of new media in the country. This book is particularly timely in the wake of the 2018 Malaysian general election, and will be of interest to students and researchers in communications, politics, new media and cultural studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, a discerning examination of what might be termed Greater Malaysia, is the first comprehensive analysis of American-Malaysian relations and Malaysian foreign policy. A strategic geographic position and rich natural resources lend obvious importance to this region, which encompasses Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei. But it is especially significant for its extraordinary political, cultural, and economic accomplishments. Achieving a peaceful transition from British colonies to independence, Malaysia and Singapore formed strong democratic governments and assumed an increasingly responsible role in the international community. The Malay, Chinese, and Indian residents of this area are a fine example of three communities of differing race, religion, and way of life existing together in harmony and cooperation. And the economic system, a successful combination of free enterprise and an extensive social welfare program, continues its stable development. Mr. Gould introduces his work with a geographic description of the lands, a lively ethnographic portrait of each of the three major racial communities, and a brief history of the numerous cultures that have had an impact on the Malaysian peoples. He then examines the governments of Malaysia, which have the problem of "creating a nation out of a multi-racial society in which communalism and local interests are far stronger than the sense of nationalism." Proceeding to the larger problem of establishing a Malaysian nation, he analyzes the forces promoting unity and disunity. Surveying Malaysia's economic progress, the author notes its dependence on the United States, the biggest buyer of Malaysia's rubber and tin, and he projects sustained economic growth. He then discusses Malaysia's regional and international relations, outlining those factors that influence its foreign policy. Concluding with a perceptive interpretation of the United States's connection to the area, he highlights the long history of friendship; the economic interdependence; the American commitment to help Malaysia maintain its political independence and further develop its viable economy; and recent aid and political relations.

It is packed with illustrated news stories covering hundreds of the nation's key social, political, cultural and sporting events. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 1,5 Germany, 4 Finland, University of Tampere, course: South-East Asia as a Business Area, language: English, abstract: Malaysia has been a trade centre for centuries. In the premodern history traded goods were in particular spices, tin and rubber. But the long-term colonial rule and the occupation of the Japanese in World War II didn’t let the economy rise. On the contrary the economy was in a disasterous situation. But Today Malaysia can be regarded as one of the most successful asian countries which achieved a really effective transition into a modern economy. The most important reason for this change were the consequent policies of the Malaysian government since the 1970s. It was able to integrate the ethnic outsider, the Malay, into the society and economy. Through its development programs it was possible to get rid of the high poverty rate, to built up much more equality in the society and create a well working economy with annual growth rates. Malaysia became a export nation which traded in the last decades mostly textile or rubber products. But in nower days Malaysia also has got a high share of exports in the electronic and high tech branche. Government policy has generally accorded a central role to foreign capital, while at the same time working towards more substantial participation for domestic, especiallybumiputera, capital and enterprise. The current plan “Vision 2020” aims to reach a fully developed industrialized economy in 2020. The first point in the essay is a short background information about the country Malaysia. I continue with the economic history from the premodern history up to the era after the Second World War. The third chapter dicusses the policies of the government; the policies of the transition as well as the contemporary policies. Finally the essay points out the present economic system and why it is so successful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although in the past few years occasional brief monographs on se lected aspects of the Communist movement in some parts of the Singapore-Malaysian area have been published, a comprehensive booklength study has not appeared thus far. The present volume is an initial step in that direction. It is, in the main, a political survey which has taken account of social and economic factors only when the par ticular focus of the book demanded it. Since most of what has been written up till now about Communism in Singapore and Malaysia has concerned itself with the Malayan guerilla insurgency and its various ramifications in the late forties and fifties, the following pages have placed primary emphasis on events in the last five years, especially on the period since the formation of the Federation of Malaysia on Sep tember 16, 1963. The absence, moreover, ofa formal "above ground" Malaysian Communist Party today has of necessity structured this inquiry in terms of the operations of various shifting Communist fronts and their relationship to the problems of the present Singapore and Malaysian political environment upon which they feed. Communism in Malaysia today, as Malaysian security officials whom this writer interviewed, repeatedly emphasized, is a matter of scattered eruptions and comparatively isolated front activity with few if any inter-organizational linkages. Research certainly confirms a picture of a rather fragmented movement. Along with Malaysia's geographic peculiarities this circumstance has dictated a region by region approach in the following pages.
