Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impoundage of flowing streams profoundly alters the biology of the affected waters. One of the changes may be a vast increase in the potential for anopheline mosquito production unless appropriate control works and procedures are planned, designed, and operated. The choice is, therefore, between the probability of a disastrous "man-made" increase in transmission of malaria or a successful resolution of the continuing conflict between adverse biological pressures and control practices. There is no ready-made formula which is applicable under all circumstances to all impoundments, for variations in ecological conditions and the primary purposes of water control are practically infinite. Hence, plans for malaria control on impounded water, though following basic principles, must be specifically adapted in method to each particular project by the selection of specifically applicable alternatives as delineated by local ecology and objectives. This publication records a comprehensive body of experience in the design and operation of programs of malaria prevention on impounded water and, while certain principles here presented seem to have been established with at least a measure of finality, this manual is no final word on the subject. On the contrary, it is essentially a report of progress submitted for such value as it may have to others confronted by similar tasks.

Book excerpt: The construction of dams in Africa is often associated with adverse malaria impacts in surrounding communities. However, the degree and nature of these impacts are rarely quantified and the feasibility of manipulating reservoir water levels to control mosquito breeding has not been previously investigated in Africa. This report describes entomological and epidemiological studies conducted around the Koka Dam and Reservoir in Ethiopia. The research findings confirm the role of the reservoir in increasing malaria transmission and provide evidence that there is potential to use dam operation in integrated malaria control strategies.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impounding Water in a Bayou to Control Breeding of Malaria Mosquitoes Of course complete drainage of surface water is the logical method of Anopheles control Where that method applies, but in the absence of a' drainage outlet, and in the presence of surface water favor able for Anopheles breeding throughout the season, other means must be given local consideration. In any consideration of drain age in the Delta it is necessary to note that the streams of this region flow away from the river, that the 's10pe of the land is from the bayou bank toward the-swamp' areas on either side, and that the fall in the bed of the bayou averages less than a foot to the mile. Under these conditions the question of drainage involves an extensive area; itis not a matter which the plantation owners can consider individually. The idea of impounding water to suppress mosquito breeding is rather foreign to the general conception of the effect of impounded water upon mosquito production. The relation which impounded water will bear to mosquito production depends altogether upon the conditions under which the work is done and the changes brought about in comparison to the natural conditions. In. The question of impounding water in a bayou we must consider the natural character of such a stream and the relation of the stream to the roadways of the plantation and the habitations of the people who cultivate the land. The bayou bank is the logical location for the houses of the tenants and it is important to control the breeding of Anopheles in this near by source. The bayou under natural conditions favors mosquito pro duction but under impounded-conditions does not. The change in conditions is brought about by the preliminary clearing and by the provision for a permanent water level sufficiently high to suppress the growth of aquatic vegetation. Following these Operations, the maintenance of a clean margin is all important. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Water has dominated images of the South throughout history, from Hernando de Soto's 1541 crossing of the Mississippi to tragic scenes of flooding throughout the Gulf South after Hurricane Katrina. But these images tell only half the story: as urban, industrial, and population growth create unprecedented demands on water in the South, the problems of pollution and water shortages grow ever more urgent. In Southern Waters: The Limits to Abundance, Craig E. Colten addresses how the South -- in an environment fraught with uncertainty -- can navigate the twin risks of too much water and not enough. From the arrival of the first European settlers, the South's inhabitants have pursued a course of maximum exploitation and control of the area's plentiful waters, investing widely in wetland drainage and massive flood-control projects. Disputes over southern waterways go back nearly as far: obstruction of fish migration by mill dams prompted new policies to protect aquatic life as early as the colonial era. Colten argues that such conflicts, which have heightened dramatically since the explosive urbanization of the mid-twentieth century, will only become more frequent and intense, making the shift toward sustainable use a national imperative. In tracing the evolving uses and abuses of southern waters, Colten offers crucial insights into the complex historical geography of water throughout the region. A masterful analysis of the ways in which past generations harnessed and consumed water, Southern Waters also stands as a guide to adapting our water usage to cope with the looming shortage of this once-abundant resource.
