Passionnant sur le plan historique, le sujet reste actuel puisque l’accès aux soins demeure un problème important de santé publique. Le choix de la période historique évoquée n’a pas été arbitraire. En effet, la Révolution Française correspond à une évolution majeure des mentalités dans le monde entier et les Antilles n’ont pas fait exception. La promulgation des Droits de l’Homme et du Citoyen avec son article premier « les hommes naissent et demeurent libres et égaux en droits » marque un tournant décisif dans l’histoire de la Guadeloupe. Ainsi ce texte fondamental énonce un ensemble de droits naturels, individuels et collectifs et fixe les conditions de leur mise en œuvre. Il est donc intéressant de se pencher sur la situation dans les colonies françaises à cette époque, et plus particulièrement en Guadeloupe. L’accès à la santé était-il équitable malgré le « droit particulier » consenti aux colonies ? La plupart d’entre nous devinent la réponse à cette question, mais il est sans doute passionnant de savoir comment se sont déroulées les choses. Cette étude n’a aucune prétention exhaustive mais se veut simplement être une « photographie » du déroulement de l’histoire en matière de santé depuis plus de deux siècles.

Book excerpt: In What Nostalgia Was, historian Thomas Dodman traces the history of clinical "nostalgia" from when it was first coined in 1688 to describe deadly homesickness until the late nineteenth century, when it morphed into the benign yearning for a lost past we are all familiar with today. Dodman explores how people, both doctors and sufferers, understood nostalgia in late seventeenth-century Swiss cantons (where the first cases were reported) to the Napoleonic wars and to the French colonization of North Africa in the latter 1800s. A work of transnational scope over the longue duree, the book is an intellectual biography of a "transient mental illness" that was successively reframed according to prevailing notions of medicine, romanticism, and climatic and racial determinism. At the same time, Dodman adopts an ethnographic sensitivity to understand the everyday experience of living with nostalgia. In so doing, he explains why nostalgia was such a compelling diagnosis for war neuroses and generalized socioemotional disembeddedness at the dawn of the capitalist era and how it can be understood as a powerful bellwether of the psychological effects of living in the modern age.
