As school violence receives increasing attention across the nation, the application of scientific knowledge is critical. For maximum effectiveness, transdisciplinary teams should use school data, logic models, and theories of change to design, implement, and evaluate interventions. Collaboration among key stakeholders is also necessary to address both structural and systemic barriers to success with violence prevention. With concrete methods for promoting safety in primary and secondary educational settings, this book will engage and enable school faculty, counselors, administrators, and other partners to better understand areas of common interest and learn how to work together more effectively.

This book was released on 2014* with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By now you have read the headlines, watched the videos and heard the stories. Shootings and violent incidents are occurring in schools and communities across the country. While people compile, assess, verify and/or dispute statistics, the drumbeat of violence escalates and media reports show shocking details. Against this backdrop, it is easy to conclude that "Somebody needs to do something." The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC) want you to know that many people are doing many positive things to address the problems. We want you to know who they are and what they are doing. Like the news media, we are sharing stories. But our stories have better outcomes. We are chronicling the success stories amid all the bad news. We are bringing you the technologies and strategies that have worked for real people across the country to prepare, respond and recover when violence occurs. These stories come straight from those who are making schools safer--the law enforcement officers and other first responders, school administrators, students and community members who can tell you what worked for them. The good news is we've got enough success stories to fill two published volumes and to continually update www.schoolsafetyinfo.org, NLECTC's website dedicated to school safety news, information and technology. That's a lot of good news to offset the bad. In this second edition of Sharing Ideas & Resources to Keep Our Nation's School Safe!, you will read about school safety-related programs from federal agencies such as the FBI and the U.S. Department of Education; efforts at the state level; and cooperative efforts in local communities. New projects and ideas range from smartphone apps to shared camera systems, training classes to online videos, direct radio connections to devices that secure doors. NIJ and NLECTC are proud to provide the resources you need to gather information to keep your communities safe. While we neither finance nor endorse specific products, we introduce you to people who have successfully used new tools to address growing problems. And, we encourage you to investigate and decide what is right for you and what has a place in your school setting. While it is true that incidents are occurring with alarming frequency, it is also true that first responders, school staff, students, parents and community leaders are stepping up to the plate to work together to combat violence and provide safe and healthy learning environments.

Book excerpt: We are in an era where security measures have become commonplace in our schools--metal detectors, school safety officers, and even armed police in the hallways. However, despite all these precautions, many of our schools are still not considered safe. In this book, experts on school violence provide guidelines for incorporating the principles of social and emotional learning and character education into school safety and crisis-preparedness programs. They cover widespread concerns, ranging from bullying and social exclusion to gang-related violence, as well as major catastrophic events--like 9/11.

Book excerpt: Ways in which school leaders can establish "safe schools" are detailed in this guide book. It offers suggestions on how to involve students, parents, law enforcement officials, business and community leaders, and other concerned citizens. This resource guide is designed to help administrators accomplish five goals: (1) assess the school climate by identifying top safety issues; (2) determine safe-school goals; (3) develop a plan for reaching safe-school goals; (4) build a support network for policy development and plan implementation; and (5) maintain a system of continuing evaluation. The guide reviews factors that affect school safety and suggests getting started by creating a planning team. A special section addresses how to conduct a school-site assessment, focusing on what to do before the assessment begins; how to gather pertinent data; how to track and monitor school crime; and how to make campuses safer through good environmental design and sensible management and maintenance. The guide suggests that the law is at the heart of safe-school planning, and it defines the guiding parameters of what must be done. Two appendices provide model assessment questionnaires and list sample plans, policies, procedures, and codes. (RJM)

Secret Service and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-07-16 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Important 2018 Secret Service reports about school shootings are reproduced: Making Schools Safer (February 2018) * Enhancing School Safety Using a Threat Assessment Model (July 2018) * Enhancing School Safety Using a Threat Assessment Model: An Operational Guide for Preventing Targeted School Violence As a bonus, this compilation also reproduces another interesting USSS report: Attacks on Federal Government 2001-2013. The tragic events of the February 14, 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and the May 18, 2018 shooting at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas, demonstrated the ongoing need to provide leadership in preventing future school attacks. As such, the U.S. Secret Service, along with many of our partners, have redoubled our efforts and are poised to continue enhancing school safety. As part of these efforts, NTAC created an operational guide that provides actionable steps that schools can take to develop comprehensive targeted violence prevention plans for conducting threat assessments in schools. Ensuring safe learning environments for elementary and secondary school students, educators, administrators, and others is essential. Everyone - whether a member of the school community or even a resident of the local area - has a role in identifying potential threats to a school and sharing that information with those who can take action to assess and manage the risk posed. Although infrequent, a single act of a targeted school attack impacts students, teachers, the local community, and at times the entire nation. Consider what role you can play in the larger efforts to make our schools safer. After a series of high profile school-based attacks, the U.S. Secret Service partnered with the U.S. Department of Education Office of Safe and Drug-free Schools to study targeted school violence. This study, the Safe School Initiative, published in 2002, examined school-based attacks carried out by current students or those who had recently left school. The study created a foundation of knowledge and guidance related to threat assessment - that is identifying, assessing, and managing risks - in K-12 schools. Following the study, the Secret Service again partnered with the Department of Education on an effort that examined why students who had information about a planned attack either withheld or came forward with the information. This second study, published in 2008, identified aspects of a school's climate that either facilitated or hindered information sharing. Since then, the Secret Service, through its National Threat Assessment Center, has continued to provide training to thousands of school administrators, faculty, staff, and law enforcement on developing innovative programs that foster safer school climates, enhance the trust students have in school staff and administrators, effectively identify potential threats, and assess and handle them in a thorough and systematic way. There are many aspects to creating positive school climates and enhancing school safety. School administrators manage reports of all types of concerning behavior, ranging from vandalism to bullying, fights to drugs, suicidal behaviors and violence. With limited resources, schools must be creative in how they address these issues.

It challenges the current "outside-in" thinking?that keeping schools safe is accomplished primarily by adults through heightened security and stricter policies. It makes the case for a complementary ?inside-out? approach that taps the power of students to change the social norms of a school culture in order to stop bullying and violence.
