Book excerpt: A tough, capable tigress, Amara Moretto has a problem. Someone is stalking her, leaving her notes, and breaking into her office. Fiercely independent, she hates to admit she may be out of her depth. Even worse, her parents have decided it’s time she got mated and settled down with a tiger from a good family. Not going to happen. Amara is the wild child rebel, and no way is she ever settling down with anyone, let alone someone her snobbish parents deem acceptable. Wolf shifter Kane Conway’s life has just collapsed. An assignment at the Shifter Agency went badly wrong, leaving his partner dead, his confidence shaken, and now he’s just been fired. Could his life get any crazier? A temporary job working as a bodyguard should keep him out of trouble for a while. He just wasn’t expecting to find himself protecting his mate. Kane’s new job is a little trickier than he expected. Can he keep his mate safe while persuading her to take a chance on him? No cliffhangers. Not suitable for those who prefer clean romance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written as a cultural weapon and a call to arms, Howl touched a raw nerve in Cold War America and has been controversial from the day it was first read aloud nearly fifty years ago. This first full critical and historical study of Howl brilliantly elucidates the nexus of politics and literature in which it was written and gives striking new portraits of Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and William Burroughs. Drawing from newly released psychiatric reports on Ginsberg, from interviews with his psychiatrist, Dr. Philip Hicks, and from the poet's journals, American Scream shows how Howl brought Ginsberg and the world out of the closet of a repressive society. It also gives the first full accounting of the literary figures—Eliot, Rimbaud, and Whitman—who influenced Howl, definitively placing it in the tradition of twentieth-century American poetry for the first time. As he follows the genesis and the evolution of Howl, Jonah Raskin constructs a vivid picture of a poet and an era. He illuminates the development of Beat poetry in New York and San Francisco in the 1950s--focusing on historic occasions such as the first reading of Howl at Six Gallery in San Francisco in 1955 and the obscenity trial over the poem's publication. He looks closely at Ginsberg's life, including his relationships with his parents, friends, and mentors, while he was writing the poem and uses this material to illuminate the themes of madness, nakedness, and secrecy that pervade Howl. A captivating look at the cultural climate of the Cold War and at a great American poet, American Scream finally tells the full story of Howl—a rousing manifesto for a generation and a classic of twentieth-century literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tribute to Ginsberg's signature work, which stirred a generation of angel-headed hipsters to cultural rebellion. In 1956, City Lights, a small San Francisco bookstore, published Allen Ginsberg's Howl and Other Poems with its trademark black-and-white cover. The original edition cost seventy-five cents, but there was something priceless about its eponymous piece. Although it gave a voice to the new generation that came of age in the conservative years following World War II, the poem also conferred a strange, subversive power that continues to exert its influence to this day. Ginsberg went on to become one of the most eminent and celebrated writers of the second half of the twentieth century, and "Howl" became the critical axis of the worldwide literary, cultural, and political movement that would be known as the Beat generation. The year 2006 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of "Howl," and The Poem That Changed America will celebrate and shed new light on this profound cultural work. With new essays by many of today's most distinguished writers, including Frank Bidart, Andrei Codrescu, Vivian Gornick, Phillip Lopate, Daphne Merkin, Rick Moody, Robert Pinsky, and Luc Sante, The Poem That Changed America reveals the pioneering influence of "Howl" down through the decades and its powerful resonance today.

Book excerpt: In this stunning sequel to Howl's Moving Castle, Diana Wynne Jones has again created a large-scale, fast-paced fantasy in which people and things are never quite what they seem. There are good and bad djinns, a genie in a bottle, wizards, witches, cats and dogs (but are they cats and dogs?), and a mysterious floating castle filled with kidnapped princesses, as well as two puzzling prophecies. The story speeds along with tantalizing twists and turns until the prophecies are fulfilled, true identities are revealed, and all is resolved in a totally satisfying, breathtaking, surprise-filled ending. Abdullah was a young and not very prosperous carpet dealer. His father, who had been disappointed in him, had left him only enough money to open a modest booth in the Bazaar. When he was not selling carpets, Abdullah spent his time daydreaming. In his dreams he was not the son of his father, but the long-lost son of a prince. There was also a princess who had been betrothed to him at birth. He was content with his life and his daydreams until, one day, a stranger sold him a magic carpet. All fans of classic fantasy books deserve the pleasure of reading those by Diana Wynne Jones, whose acclaim included the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement. As Neil Gaiman stated, she was "quite simply the best writer for children of her generation." The three books in the World of Howl are: Howl's Moving Castle Castle in the Air House of Many Ways Other beloved series from Dianna Wynne Jones include the Chronicles of Chrestomanci and the Dalemark Quartet.

Book excerpt: The howling hunger that lies deep inside will not be contained… After months of chaos, the largest city in the East Coast where vampires, werewolves and humans live together is now peaceful since Roderick Savery, the werewolf king signed a treaty with the queen of the vampires. He wouldn’t have succeeded without his best friend and trusted advisor, Will Seiler. Will is much more than just a faithful servant to his king. He’s been Roderick’s secret lover for years. He shares an intense bond with Roderick but their love can never be acknowledged publicly. He has sacrificed so much for his king, and needs space from Roderick so he can figure out what’s best for him. Will takes a “sabbatical” and will stay in Crested Forge, where he spent many happy summers as a child. He hopes the small town surrounded by miles of forest will give him the comfort he needs before he makes a decision that might ruin his relationship with Roderick forever. But when the eldest son of the Forge’s most respected patriarchs is gruesomely murdered during a celebration that should have put to rest centuries of animosity between two warring families, he finds himself tasked with solving the crime. As he gets closer to the truth, he ends up with a target on his back that makes Roderick come to his aid. Roderick would do anything in his power to protect his mate. While he and Will try to find a deranged killer on the loose, they also must face the consequence of their actions in order to have a future together. Even if that means Roderick giving up his destiny for the other half of his soul.

Book excerpt: My sister frowns in confusion. “I don’t see why we can’t uncomplicate it. You’ve found your mate, what do you mean ‘she belongs to Jace?’ Is she Jace’s mate?” “No,” I snarl, slamming my fists on the floor, feeling my beast make itself known again. Kayden sighs heavily. “She’s his slave.” Tyler Storm is supposed to lead every werewolf pack on the West Coast into an age of prosperity—but before he does that, he needs to get control of the explosive cocktail of predator blood in his veins. Controlling your inner wolf is hard enough without a vampiric bloodline complicating things. And then one night, he meets his destined mate... and she is at the feet of a rival Alpha. In chains. It’s enough to make anyone lose their head. Meanwhile, Abbygail has just about given up on anything better than trying to please the brute who slaughtered her parents, and hopefully not getting too many ribs kicked in next time he wants to work off some steam. She doesn’t realize that there’s more than sadism behind what’s happening to her: there’s a calculated shot at unseating a king and destroying a peace treaty generations in the making. The curse of a sacred bond that has been twisted and defiled descends on the two of them as Tyler loses control, and Abby discovers that she may have been down, but she wasn’t out. Not for good, anyway.

This book was released on 2017-10-06 with total page 737 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three Men in a Boat, published in 1889, is a humorous account by Jerome K. Jerome. It is a story of three men, accompanied by a dog, as they travel in a boat up the River Thames. The book was initially intended to be a serious travel guide, with accounts of local history along the route, but the humorous elements took over to the point where the serious and somewhat sentimental passages seem a distraction. The three men are based on Jerome himself (the narrator J.) and two real-life friends, George and Carl with whom he often took boating trips. The dog, Montmorency, is entirely fictional. Because of the overwhelming success of Three Men in a Boat, Jerome later published a sequel, about a cycling tour in Germany, titled Three Men on the Bummel. Three Men on the Bummel (also known as Three Men on Wheels) was published in 1900, eleven years after his most famous work, Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog). The sequel brings back the three companions who figured in Three Men in a Boat, this time on a bicycle tour through the German Black Forest. Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow, published in 1886, is a collection of humorous essays by Jerome K. Jerome. It was the author's second published book and it helped establish him as a leading English humorist. While widely considered one of Jerome's better works, and in spite of using the same style as Three Men in a Boat, it was never as popular as the latter. Jerome Klapka Jerome (1859 – 1927) was an English writer and humorist, best known for the comic travelogue Three Men in a Boat.
