Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A deeply curious and evenhanded report on our national appetites." --The New York Times In the tradition of Fast Food Nation and The Omnivore's Dilemma, an extraordinary investigation into the human lives at the heart of the American grocery store The miracle of the supermarket has never been more apparent. Like the doctors and nurses who care for the sick, suddenly the men and women who stock our shelves and operate our warehouses are understood as 'essential' workers, providing a quality of life we all too easily take for granted. But the sad truth is that the grocery industry has been failing these workers for decades. In this page-turning expose, author Benjamin Lorr pulls back the curtain on the highly secretive grocery industry. Combining deep sourcing, immersive reporting, and sharp, often laugh-out-loud prose, Lorr leads a wild investigation, asking what does it take to run a supermarket? How does our food get on the shelves? And who suffers for our increasing demands for convenience and efficiency? In this journey: We learn the secrets of Trader Joe's success from Trader Joe himself Drive with truckers caught in a job they call "sharecropping on wheels" Break into industrial farms with activists to learn what it takes for a product to earn certification labels like "fair trade" and "free range" Follow entrepreneurs as they fight for shelf space, learning essential tips, tricks, and traps for any new food business Journey with migrants to examine shocking forced labor practices through their eyes The product of five years of research and hundreds of interviews across every level of the business, The Secret Life of Groceries is essential reading for those who want to understand our food system--delivering powerful social commentary on the inherently American quest for more and compassionate insight into the lives that provide it.

Book excerpt: "Making Groceries" - Makin' Groceries is a New Orleans term that, simply put, means going to the grocery store to buy or purchase groceries. Ask any stranger what they think of when you mention "New Orleans" and more often than not "the food" is the first thing that they rave about. Making Groceries is just the beginning of the journey though... to really experience the food means experiencing the meaning behind the food. Many of these recipes were shared during family get-together's and special events where everyone brings their best dish. As you browse through the pictures and short stories you fall in love with food, family, and friends. This is not your "generic" variety cookbook...this is a legacy of love, and cultural expression, passed down through generations, that choose to defy the limits of recipes or ethnicity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many reasons to make as many groceries at home as possible. The lack of chemicals and preservatives, financial savings and health benefits. Unless you are 100% self-sufficient, you can't make everything from scratch you purchase from the grocery store. I will give you tips to make those purchased items more economical and ways to store them. I live in a small town and since the pandemic started, many items have been hard to find. I cooked from scratch frequently, but just like everyone else, I started using more and more convenience foods to save time. The pandemic made me take a hard look at our eating habits and the need to have resources more readily available. I plan several hours a week into my schedule to make homemade groceries. These few hours invested ended up saving more time and money. There are a few kitchen items you will need. They are basic items that every kitchen should have. A good sharp knife, hand grater, box grater, freezer bags, food processor, blender, glass and/or plastic storage freezer containers. I like the Pyrex glass storage containers since I can freeze and microwave in them. I prefer glass to plastic but use what you have. Baking sheets, baking pans, cookie scoops, measuring cups and spoons are a must. I have a large freezer so I freeze most of my groceries. Even if you do not have a freezer, make as much as you can from scratch. Freeze what you can or refrigerate until used. Even a few items will add up in savings. A dollar or two saved here and there really adds up over time. We all love the convenience foods available at the grocery store. They are already cooked and ready to eat. Included are recipes for the most popular convenience items. They can be made at a fraction of the cost and the recipes contain no preservatives or chemicals. Your wallet, health and waistline will thank you. Homemade items do not taste exactly like store bought items. We have become addicted to chemically produced flavors. Homemade products do not have chemicals or unnatural preservatives and usually use much less sugar too.

Book excerpt: The People's Grocer is a business-based biography of John G. Schwegmann, founder of a legendary New Orleans' supermarket chain and the most innovative and courageous retailer of the postwar era. Virtually unrecognized in retail history, visionary Schwegmann pioneered the modern big-box concept. Even more important, his 1951 Supreme Court victory over "fair trade" laws played a key role in legalizing discount pricing. A marketer extraordinaire, Schwegmann's offbeat and controversial ads and shopping bags came to symbolize the Crescent City. As a fierce consumer crusader, his fiery passions ultimately drove him into politics.Along with spotlighting the life, career, and family legacy of John Schwegmann, this biography illuminates a broad spectrum of neglected socioeconomic topics. Old corner grocery stores, outdoor and public markets, real estate in the Great Depression, manufacturer price fixing, the supermarket revolution, postwar New Orleans politics, and the battle over the Superdome--all these stories and more are explored in an epic book spanning retail history from the pre-industrial 1850s to the post-industrial 1990s.

The intent of this book is to educate the sighted world regarding situations as they relate not only to blind people, but also to all society. In many cases, the blind must be overly aggressive and take the risk of being judged as pushy. Even then, they still get very few opportunities. As it stands, 70%% of blind adults in this country are unemployed. Hopefully, this book will do something to change that situation.

Book excerpt: Hungry for change? Put the power of food co-ops on your plate and grow your local food economy. Food has become ground-zero in our efforts to increase awareness of how our choices impact the world. Yet while we have begun to transform our communities and dinner plates, the most authoritative strand of the food web has received surprisingly little attention: the grocery store—the epicenter of our food-gathering ritual. Through penetrating analysis and inspiring stories and examples of American and Canadian food co-ops, Grocery Story makes a compelling case for the transformation of the grocery store aisles as the emerging frontier in the local and good food movements. Author Jon Steinman: Deconstructs the food retail sector and the shadows cast by corporate giants Makes the case for food co-ops as an alternative Shows how co-ops spur the creation of local food-based economies and enhance low-income food access. Grocery Story is for everyone who eats. Whether you strive to eat more local and sustainable food, or are in support of community economic development, Grocery Story will leave you hungry to join the food co-op movement in your own community.

Book excerpt: The New York Times–bestselling author “digs deep into the world of how we shop and how we eat. It’s a marvelous, smart, revealing work” (Susan Orlean, #1 bestselling author). In a culture obsessed with food—how it looks, what it tastes like, where it comes from, what is good for us—there are often more questions than answers. Ruhlman proposes that the best practices for consuming wisely could be hiding in plain sight—in the aisles of your local supermarket. Using the human story of the family-run Midwestern chain Heinen’s as an anchor to this journalistic narrative, he dives into the mysterious world of supermarkets and the ways in which we produce, consume, and distribute food. Grocery examines how rapidly supermarkets—and our food and culture—have changed since the days of your friendly neighborhood grocer. But rather than waxing nostalgic for the age of mom-and-pop shops, Ruhlman seeks to understand how our food needs have shifted since the mid-twentieth century, and how these needs mirror our cultural ones. A mix of reportage and rant, personal history and social commentary, Grocery is a landmark book from one of our most insightful food writers. “Anyone who has ever walked into a grocery store or who has ever cooked food from a grocery store or who has ever eaten food from a grocery store must read Grocery. It is food journalism at its best and I’m so freakin’ jealous I didn’t write it.” —Alton Brown, television personality “If you care about why we eat what we eat—and you want to do something about it—you need to read this absorbing, beautifully written book.” —Ruth Reichl, New York Times–bestselling author

Book excerpt: A code of practice was introduced by the UK Government to enable suppliers to fear UK supermarkets less. This code is called GSCOP - The Groceries Supply Code of Practice. Sales Directors, Category Managers, and National Account Managers need to understand the 'rules of the game' that they play in, because how can they call 'foul play' if they don't know the rules? It's ok not to know the off-side rule, unless you are a footballer! This book has been written to help suppliers to to major UK supermarkets to understand the Government legislation that was brought-in to protect them. Christine Tacon, the Groceries Code Adjudicator, challenges suppliers to understand the Code, in this 3.5 minute video https: //www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oEgPaQtcUw This book is designed to raise awareness of the Code with suppliers, highlight the most important areas for a supplier to consider, and be used as a reference to come back to understand, for example, the rules around 'delisting' when they need to.
