Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XV. ROBERT RAINY. A. When the history of the Scottish Church in the nineteenth century comes to be written, it is certain that the name of Robert Rainy will take a place by itself, as undoubtedly that of a real Maker of the Church. His name will stand beside those of Knox, Henderson, and Carstares. Rainy belonged to the same succession. He had the far-seeing intuition of Knox: he had the spirituality, breadth of brow, and idealism of Henderson: he had the caution, diplomacy, and statesmanship of Carstares. What he was to Scotland and to the Scottish Church will not be accurately seen until it becomes possible to look back on his work from the standpoint of a future generation. It is not possible to do it now, when the Church of Christ in Scotland is still feeling keenly his loss. But no account of the Makers of the Scottish Church could be complete without some appreciation, however slight, of Principal Rainy. 1. The problems which faced an ecclesiastical statesman such as Principal Rainy were the compelling problems of an age of readjustment. They were not, of course, the problems of the centuries of the past. They were not the problems of Church government with which Henderson and Melville and Carstares had to wrestle. Nor were they the problems of State domination which had been fought out by the Secession fathers and the men of 1843. But the problems of an age of readjustment went back fundamentally to the same old problems of Liberty, and there was involved in them the same time-old question of the Church's Spiritual Independence. The problems involved in readjustment were crystallised in questions such as these: Was the Church of Christ free to follow what she thought to be the mind of Christ? Was she free to follow, in...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Makers of the Scottish Church at the Reformation As the life of John Knox has been so Often written, I had some misgivings as to whether he should appear here for separate treatment, but it was impossible to exclude him - the greatest Of them all, and incalculably influencing all the others. I have not, however, in his case given a biography, but, as stated in the text, have selected certain incidents in his career, features in his character, and aspects of truth he emphasised, which are closely related to the work Of reform. I have also laid stress on his modern Spirit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do animals have rights? If not, do we have duties towards them? If so, what duties? These and a myriad of other issues are discussed in the brilliantly argued Animal Rights and Wrongs. Issues discussed include- - Why are animal-rights groups so keen to protect the rights of rabbits and foxes but not of rats or mice or even humans? - How can we bridge the growing gap between rural producers and urban consumers? -Why is raising animals for fur more heinous than raising them for their meat? -Are we as human beings driving other species either to extinction or to a state of dependency? Animal Rights and Wrongs includes chapters on the livestock crisis, fishing, BSE and a layman's introduction to philosophical concepts. The book presents a radical response to the defenders of animal rights, and a challenge to those who think that because they are kind to their pets, they are therefore good news for animals.

Book excerpt: In these studies, Alec Cheyne explores the history of the churches of Scotland since the Reformation.Professor Cheyne looks especially at the leaders: among them Robert Rollock, Robert Leighton, William Carstares, Thomas Chalmers, John Tulloch, John Caird, Henry Drummond, John Baillie and Donald Baillie. He illuminates just how much change and diversity in thought, worship, government and culture these four hundred years have witnessed in the churches - far greater than has traditionally been supposed. He also describes the importance of the constant interaction between ecclesiastical and academic affairs, and the very wide influence of the churches on Scottish life as a whole.A significant work of Scottish history and reference.

Concerns not only the Church of Scotland and dissident Presbyterians, but also the Episcopal Church in Scotland, the Roman Catholic Church, and the small sects. Examines the social and theological factors in the rise o the Evangelicals, the loss of power int eh Assembly by Moderates, and the "Ten Years' War" from 1834 to 1843, when the Scottish church was brought to crisis and division. Questions the interpretation of the Disruption from the standpoints of Scottish history and the twentieth century.
