Book Synopsis European Cities by : Patrick Le Galès
Download or read book European Cities written by Patrick Le Galès and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2002-08-08 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European cities are on the rise, and are taking advantage of the opportunities of the European integration and globalization processes. But they also face economic changes, social inequalities, poverty and a new set of constraints. Taking examples through the European Union, European Cities explores the impact of the transformation of the nation states on cities and the change of local societies and local governments. It argues that new modes of urban governance are emerging, and that cities are becoming collective actors within European governance. European Cities shows why and how the bulk of European cities still appear to be original forms of compromise, aggregation, representation of diverse interests, and culture. Different modes of governance are gradually being structured in most middle size European cities despite processes of social exclusion segregation accompanied by the increased mobility of some citizens. Are Europeans going to invent a new form of institutionalized and territorialized capitalism, of which medium-sized European cities will be one of the pillars and one of the actors ? Failing that, the effects of changing scales could be expressed as profound transformations of the European urban model. European Societies Series Series Editor: Colin Crouch Very few of the existing sociological texts which compare different European societies on specific topics are accessible to a broad range of scholars and students. The European Societies series will help fill this gap in the literature, and attempt to answer questions such as: Is there really such a thing as a 'European model' of society? Do the economic and political integration processes of the European Union also imply convergence in more general aspects of social life, like family or religious behaviour? What do the societies of Western Europe have in common with those further to the east? This series will cover the main social institutions, although not every author will cover the full range of European countries. As well as surveying existing knowledge in a way that will be useful to students, each book will also seek to contribute to our growing knowledge of what remains in many respects a sociologically unknown continent.

Book Synopsis Regulation in the European Electricity Sector by : Maciej M Sokołowski
Download or read book Regulation in the European Electricity Sector written by Maciej M Sokołowski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-22 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the very beginning of European integration, electricity has been within the legal sphere of the EU. Much of this is found within the binding European acts making up the framework of the Energy Packages. The established legal institutions have had a significant impact on the shape of the energy market in Europe. Nevertheless, the European energy market still seems to be developing, as demonstrated by the current lively discussion about the state of the Energy Union. Regulation in the European Electricity Sector delves into European energy law and reflects on some of the primary issues related to the public legal impact on the European energy sector. The book offers a brief explanation of the background operation of the electricity sector, as well as liberalisation within the area, and traces the evolution of the EU’s approach towards the issue of public law regulation within the electricity sector. Finally, the book presents an analysis of European and national laws, considering their interpretation, and explores the future of public law regulation. Aimed at giving the reader a deep insight into a nature of the state’s presence in the power sector, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of EU energy law and policy.

Book Synopsis The EU's Major Electricity and Gas Utilities Since Market Liberalization by : Christian Schülke
Download or read book The EU's Major Electricity and Gas Utilities Since Market Liberalization written by Christian Schülke and published by Gouvernance Europeenne Et Geop. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major change has taken place in the company structure of the European electricity and gas markets. Since the liberalization of EU energy markets began in the 1990s, companies like E.ON, GDF Suez, EDF, Enel, and RWE have become European giants with activities in a large number of member states. The advocates of market liberalization did not expect, or intend, the emergence of a small number of large utilities that control an increasing part of the EU market. Some observers claim that liberalization has led to an oligopoly with detrimental consequences for competition. Based on extensive background research, this book presents a fact-based analysis of the changes in the European utility sector since the 1990s. Case studies of the seven largest utilities illustrate how companies adapted their strategies to the changing market environment. The author underlines diverging choices and common trends with the aim of using synergies between electricity and gas.
Book Synopsis Article 234 and Competition Law by : Barry J. Rodger
Download or read book Article 234 and Competition Law written by Barry J. Rodger and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2008-03-13 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a truism that almost all the major principles established by the ECJ have been decided in the context of a reference to that court for a preliminary ruling under Article 234 (ex 177) EC. Article 234 facilitates a dialogue between the national courts and the ECJ in order to allow national courts to seek guidance on the appropriate interpretation of Community law principles in a particular legal dispute. From a Community perspective, this process should enhance the uniform and consistent interpretation of Community law throughout the national courts. This book adds to a growing body of literature on the ECJ’s role in developing Community law and comprises quantitative and qualitative aspects. It is based on collaborative research, involving 14 Member States, which focused on the Article 234 procedure in relation to competition law and State aid cases. Rapporteurs were appointed in each Member State from which any Article 177/234 references had been made in relation to competition law or State aid. The results presented here follow up competition law-related Article 234 rulings to their domestic legal context, to ascertain what happened in the subsequent legal phase, when parties seek to enforce their rights or rely on other party’s obligations, on the basis of the ruling by the ECJ. Each national report is built on a questionnaire seeking information on a range of issues relative to every competition law-related ruling by the ECJ in references from that Member State’s courts, including the following: the number of rulings in relation to that Member State; the dates of all rulings; details of the case background, reference questions, and the ECJ ruling for each case; and information, where available, on each post-ruling process. The research is comprehensive in reviewing all competition law-related rulings to 1 May 2004, and pioneering as being the first systematic attempt to collate detailed information on all relevant cases, including crucially the post-ruling process. This research is an important contribution to the literature on the ECJ and its role in developing a competition culture across the Community. Moreover, the importance of ensuring consistency and uniformity in the implementation of EC competition law by national courts has been given added significance following the accession of new Member States. In light of these factors, this book will serve as a reliable groundwork for further studies of the development of European integration, particularly as it focuses on competition law, an area of ever-increasing significance and importance. It is also of distinctive value to practitioners seeking precedents or juridical context on which to build arguments in European competition law.

Book Synopsis The Routledge Handbook of Differentiation in the European Union by : Benjamin Leruth
Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Differentiation in the European Union written by Benjamin Leruth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-05-11 with total page 787 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Differentiation in the European Union offers an essential collection of groundbreaking chapters reflecting on the causes and consequences of this complex phenomenon. With contributions from key experts in this subfield of European Studies, it will become a key volume used for those interested in learning the nuts and bolts of differentiation as a mechanism of (dis)integration in the European Union, especially in the light of Brexit. Organised around five key themes, it offers an authoritative "encyclopaedia" of differentiation and addresses questions such as: How can one define differentiation in the European Union in the light of the most recent events? Does differentiation create more challenges or opportunities for the European Union? Is Europe moving away from an "ever closer Union" and heading towards an "ever more differentiated Union", especially as leading political figures across Europe favour the use of differentiation to reconcile divergences between member states? This handbook is essential reading and an authoritative reference for scholars, students, researchers and practitioners involved in, and actively concerned about, research in the study of European integration. As European differentiation is multifaceted and involves a wide range of actors and policies, it will be of further interest to those working on countries and/or in policy areas where differentiation is an increasingly relevant feature.
