Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first hospital-affiliated surgical unit designed specifically for ambulatory surgery in the state of California began functioning as part of Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in 1973. As this text is readied for publication, the unit is in its tenth year of operation. More than 20,000 patients have undergone surgery there. The enthusiasm generated by ~\ir experience in Santa Barbara, along with the widespread, growing interest in ambulatory surgery, prompted us to undertake this volume. The first three chapters cover principles and administrative aspects, an esthesiology, and nursing in the ambulatory surgical center. Subsequent chap ters, the major portion of the text, provide detailed, meticulously illustrated descriptions of surgical procedures as they are done in the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Outpatient Surgical Center by the surgeons who work there. They reflect current practice and emphasize the techniques found most reliable by the surgeons who use them in the outpatient setting. This manual includes many of the operations most commonly performed in our facility and emphasizes the unique aspects of surgery and patient care in outpatient practice. The text is concise, practical, and based on our collective experience. The illustrations are, for the most part, drawn from the surgeon's perspective and faithfully render the actual appearance of the operative field during surgery. Supplementary cross-sectional and conceptual drawings are included to orient the reader.

Book excerpt: The rapidly growing developments in medicine and science in the last few decades has evoked a greater need for modern institutions, with modern medicine, advanced technologies, and cutting edge research. Today, the modern hospital is a highly competitive, multibillion dollar industry that plays a large role in our healthcare systems. Far different from older institutions, modern hospitals juggle the dynamics of running a business that proves financially fruitful and sustainable, with maintaining and staying ahead of medical developments and offering the best possible patient care. This comprehensive book explores all aspects of the inner workings of a modern hospital, from research and technology driven treatment and patient centered care, to the organizational, functional, architectural, and ergonomic aspects of the business. The text is organized into three parts. The first part covers a number of important aspects of the modern hospital including hospital transformation over the centuries, the new medical world order, overall concept, academic mission and economics of new healthcare. Additionally, experts in the field address issues such as modern design functionally and creating an environment that is ergonomically friendly, technologically advanced, and easy to navigate for both worker and patient. Other topics covered include, the role of genomics and nano-technologies, controversies that come with introducing new technologies, the world-wide pharmaceutical industry, electronic medical health records, informatics, and quality of patient care. Part II addresses nine specific elements of modernization of the hospital that deal with high acuity, life and death situations, and complex medical and surgical diseases. These chapters cover the organization of new emergency departments, trauma room, hybrid operating rooms, intensive care units, radiology, pharmaceutical and nutritional support, and most essential, patient and public relation services. These nine elements reflect the most important and most visible indicators of modernization and transformation of the hospital. Part III examines and highlights the team approach as a crucial component of the transformation, as well as specific perspectives on the modern hospital from nurses, physicians, surgeons and administrators. Finally, a chapter dedicated to patient perspective is also presented. The Modern Hospital provides an all-inclusive review of the hospital industry. It will serve as a valuable resource for administrators, clinicians, surgeons, nurses, and researchers. All chapters will be written by practicing experts in their fields and include the most up-to-date scientific and clinical information.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive review of the challenges, risk stratification, approaches and techniques needed to improve pain control in ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs). It addresses not only the management of acute perioperative pain but also describes modalities that could potentially reduce the risk of evolution of acute pain into chronic pain, in addition to weaning protocols and follow ups with primary surgical specialties and pain physicians as needed. Organized into five sections, the book begins with the foundations of managing ASCs, with specific attention paid to the current opioid epidemic and U.S. policies relating to prescribing opioids to patients. Section two and three then explore facets of multimodal analgesia and non-operating room locations, including the use of ultrasounds, sedation in specific procedures, regional anesthesia, ketamine infusions, and the management of perioperative nausea and intractable pain in outpatient surgery. Section four examines the unique challenges physicians face with certain patient demographics, such as the pediatric population, those suffering from sleep apnea, and those with a history of substance abuse. The book closes with information on discharge considerations, ambulatory surgery protocols, recovery room protocols, and mandatory pain management services. An invaluable reference for all health personnel and allied specialties, Pain Control in Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs) meets the unmet need for a resource that covers optimum pain control in patients undergoing outpatient surgery as well as the urgent ASCs challenges that are presented on an immense scale with national and international impact.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the International Association for Ambulatory Surgery (IAAS), ambulatory surgery should be defined as 'an operation/procedure, excluding an office or outpatient operation/procedure, where the patient is discharged on the same working day'. The rise of ambulatory surgery has been driven by technological advances that reduce the need for overnight hospital stays, enhanced recovery programmes that advocate early mobilisation, and the need for economic efficiency. Recent experience has shown that redistributing surgical procedures from the inpatient setting to ambulatory centres can be done without impacting quality. The majority of people requiring urologic surgery are now treated as day/outpatients thus requiring a different level of care from inpatients. Ambulatory Urology and Urogynaecology is the only book that combines urology and urogynaecology focuses on outpatient management. Packed with learning points, practical hints and tips, and boasting an international group of contributing authors, this book is co-edited by world-leading pioneers in urologic and urogynaecological surgery. Ambulatory Urology and Urogynaecology is ideal for urologists, urogynaecologists and gynaecologists, as well as specialist urology nurses and surgeons. With more and outpatient procedures being performed, this book is the perfect step-by-step guide to consult time and time again.
