Book excerpt: In recent years, the most important and influential change in the historiography of South Asia, and particularly India, has been brought about by the globally renowned 'Subaltern Studies' project that began 20 years ago. The present volume of critiques and readings of the project represents the first comprehensive historical introduction to Subaltern Studies and the worldwide debates it has generated among scholars of history, politics and sociology. The volume provides a reliable point of departure for new readers of Subaltern Studies and a resource base for experienced readers, who want to revive critical debates. In his introduction, David Ludden traces the intellectual history of subalternity and analyses trends in the globalization of academic discourse that account for the changing character of Subaltern Studies as well as for the shifting debates around it. In doing so, he expands the field of discussion well beyond Subaltern Studies into broader problems of historical research methodology in the study of subordinate people and into problems of writing contemporary intellectual history. The book thus provides a general readers' guide to techniques for critical historical reading. It uses Subaltern Studies to indicate how readers can read themselves, their context, the text, the author, the author's sources and the subject of study into a single, contentious field of historical analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded by Sayyid Ahmad (1786-1831) of Rae Bareli, the Wahhabi Movement in India was a vigorous movement for socio-religious reforms in Indo-Islamic society in the nineteenth century with strong political undercurrents. It stood for a strong affirmation of Tauhid (unity of God), the efficacy of ijtihad (the right of further interpretation of the Quran and the Sunnah, or of forming a new opinion by applying analogy) and the rejection of bid'at (innovation). It remained active for half a century. Sayyid Ahmad's writings show an awareness of the increasing British presence in the country and he regarded British India as a daru'l harb (abode of war). In 1826 he migrated and established an operational base in the independent tribal belt of the North Western Frontier area. After his death in the battle of Balakote, the Movement slackened for some time but his adherents particularly Wilayet Ali and Enayat Ali of Patna revived the work and broad-based its activities. The climax of the Movement was reached in the Ambeyla War (1863) during which the English army suffered serious losses at the hands of the Wahhabis. This led the Government to take stern measures to suppress the Movement. Investigations were launched, the leaders were arrested and sentenced to long-term imprisonments and their properties confiscated. That broke the back of the Movement but it continued to be a potential source of trouble to the government. The Movement does not fit in neatly in any one of the groups and categories into which the history of the early resistance to British rule has been divided by some of the writers on the subject. It cut across some of them time-wise and theme-wise. The existing studies on the subject do not offer a comprehensive profile of the Movement and fail to analyse its nature and the reasons for its failure politically. This well researched study drawing on a vast array of contemporary records, many of them for the first time, seeks to fill this gap and presents an integrated account of the rise and growth of the Movement, its operation over the entire area and period of its existence, its impact and reasons for its failure. This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ahmed Ibn Majid might be one of the most detested names in India. In the classic, first hand historical sources, especially classical history texts on Mappila history, which is one of our focal areas as publisher, Ibn Majid is the man who guided Vasco da Gama from Africa to India. The name is resonating with colonialism and invasion, from whose legacy and memory post-colonial India at least pretends to free itself. Sultan bin Muhammad al Qasimi, the eminent ruler of Sharjah, proves with sufficient evidence that the guide of- Vasco, da Gama was not Ahmed Ibn Majid, but a Qujarati who believed in a form of Christianity. The belief and geography of the person who was complicit in colonialism might not be relevant, though the innocence of Ahmed Ibn Majid in this context would deconstruct the argument for a Muslim connivance in the colonial project. But the vilification of Ahmed Ibn Majid has helped brush off the intellectual legacy of a man who has contributed to oceanic studies. This book will inform you that he wrote Kitab al Muheet (Book of Oceans) and Sufaliah (a Rhapsody sub-headed 'blossoming of the oceanic wisdom'). That the vilification was started not by the classical Portuguese historians but by later historians will force us to read this book in the context of orientalism. Sultan bin Muhammad al Qasimi has written other notable works in this ilk. His Myth of Arab Piracy in the Gulf deconstructs the historical lie that almost all pirates were Arabs. We believe that a true, revolutionary historiography of today involves de- mythification of all constructs and cherished notions. When Sultan's analysis dealt with a name which is of importance to Mappila history, we undertook the task of publishing it. Sultan also brings into analysis Tuhfat al Mujahiddin, from whose publication Other Books started to move. Sultan says how the name of Ibn Majid got interpolated in Tuhfa in its later edition. The book has four parts: A treatise of Sultan in which he refutes the allegation of Arab historians against Ibn Majid and Vasco da Gama's diary (in Arabic, English, Portuguese languages as appendices), the latter of which is the principle proof.

Freamon, an African-American Muslim law professor, provides a penetrating analysis of the problems of slavery and slave-trading in Islamic history. After examining the issues from pre-Islamic times through to the nineteenth century, Professor Freamon considers the impact of Western abolitionism, arguing that such efforts have been a failure, with the notion of abolition becoming nothing more than a cruel illusion. He closes this ground-breaking account with an examination of the slaving ideologies and actions of ISIS and Boko Haram, asserting that Muslims now have an important and urgent responsibility to achieve true abolition under the aegis of Islamic law. Book excerpt: ‘A more heroic tale has yet to be told . . . [Mohandas] is meticulously researched, written in felicitous prose and is a delight to read’—Khushwant Singh, Outlook A candid recreation of one of the most influential lives of recent times, Mohandas finally answers questions long asked about the timid youth from PBI - India’s west coast who became a century’s conscience and led his nation to liberty: What was Gandhi like in his daily life and in his closest relationships? In his face-offs with an Empire, with his own bitterly divided people, with his adversaries, his family and—his greatest confrontation—with himself? Answering these and other questions, and releasing the true Gandhi from his shroud of fame and myth, Mohandas, authored by a practised biographer who is also Gandhi’s grandson, does more than tell a story. Praise for the Book ‘Rajmohan strikes a fine balance in this comprehensive work, lacing the painstakingly detailed chronological account with just the right amount of interpretation. [His] approach goes a long way in painting a portrait of Gandhiji that is very human, plausible, and easy to identify with’ —Mukund Padmanabhan, The Hindu ‘An impeccable exercise in objectivity . . . A remarkable performance. This biography ought to be read over and over again . . . The bareness of Rajmohan’s recital of moods and events heightens the poignancy . . . Mahatma Gandhi was a votary of restraint; this book exemplifies, magnificently, such restraint. The grandfather would have approved of Rajmohan’s Mohandas’ —Ashok Mitra, Telegraph ‘A story of epic proportions . . . Gandhi’s luminous compassion, courage and humanity shine through these pages and bring light into our lives’ —Sonia Gandhi ‘The only word to describe this work is “fabulous”. Literally scores of people have written on Mahatma Gandhi . . . But . . . Mohandas will henceforth be remembered as the last word on the subject’ —M.V. Kamath, Organizer

Book excerpt: In the picturesque town of Behalpur, nestled amidst the tranquil embrace of the Himalayan foothills, a spirited family was about to embark on a journey that would entwine their love for racing and their deep-rooted bonds of tradition. At the heart of this narrative stood Joginder Singh Ji, the patriarch of the Singh family. His love for speed had been passed down through generations, and the upcoming mountain car race was not only a competition but a testament to the family’s legacy. Alongside them, embracing a journey as thrilling as the mountain race, were two remarkable women – Sarah and Tracy. Strangers to this family, they had crossed continents to become an inseparable part of their lives, uniting them in a tale that transcends borders. However, amidst the roar of engines and the thrill of the race, the story also unfolds a different chapter. It’s a tale of love, unity, and the gentle reminder that in the pursuit of our passions, we must never forget the invaluable bonds that connect us to our roots. A grand wedding and a thrilling race were on the horizon, and the Singh family was poised at the crossroads of tradition and ambition. This is a story of family, racing, and the seamless blend of two worlds, where love knows no boundaries and where, as the engines of life revved on, the heart remained firmly in the driver’s seat.

Book excerpt: A Political and Economic History of the Jews of Afghanistan by Sara Koplik describes the situation of Jews in that country during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, particularly 1839-1952. It examines the political, economic and social conditions they faced as religious minorities. The work focuses upon harsh governmental economic policies of the 1930s and 1940s spearheaded by 'Abd al-Majid Khan Zabuli which caused the impoverishment and suffering of both the local community and refugees from Soviet Central Asia. The question of Nazi influence in Afghanistan is addressed, with the author arguing that it was mainly limited to the economic sphere. An examination of the appeal of Zionism and the community's immigration to Israel is included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Empire at its height governed more than half the world’s Muslims. It was a political imperative for the Empire to present itself to Muslims as a friend and protector, to take seriously what one scholar called its role as “the greatest Mohamedan power in the world.” Few tasks were more important than engagement with the pilgrimage to Mecca. Every year, tens of thousands of Muslims set out for Mecca from imperial territories throughout Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, from the Atlantic Ocean to the South China Sea. Men and women representing all economic classes and scores of ethnic and linguistic groups made extraordinary journeys across waterways, deserts, and savannahs, creating huge challenges for officials charged with the administration of these pilgrims. They had to balance the religious obligation to travel against the desire to control the pilgrims’ movements, and they became responsible for the care of those who ran out of money. John Slight traces the Empire’s complex interactions with the Hajj from the 1860s, when an outbreak of cholera led Britain to engage reluctantly in medical regulation of pilgrims, to the Suez Crisis of 1956. The story draws on a varied cast of characters—Richard Burton, Thomas Cook, the Begums of Bhopal, Lawrence of Arabia, and frontline imperial officials, many of them Muslim—and gives voice throughout to the pilgrims themselves. The British Empire and the Hajj is a crucial resource for understanding how this episode in imperial history was experienced by rulers and ruled alike.

Book excerpt: In this often moving, sometimes wry account of life in Baghdad during the first war on Iraq and in exile in the years following, Iraqi-born, British-educated artist Nuha al-Radi shows us the effects of war on ordinary people. She recounts the day-to-day realities of living in a city under siege, where food has to be consumed or thrown out because there is no way to preserve it, where eventually people cannot sleep until the nightly bombing commences, where packs of stray dogs roam the streets (and provide her own dog Salvi with a harem) and rats invade homes. Through it all, al-Radi works at her art and gathers with neighbors and family for meals and other occasions, happy and sad. In the wake of the war, al-Radi lives in semi-exile, shuttling between Beirut and Amman, travelling to New York, London, Mexico and Yemen. As she suffers the indignities of being an Iraqi in exile, al-Radi immerses us in a way of life constricted by the stress and effects of war and embargoes, giving texture to a reality we have only been able to imagine before now. But what emanates most vibrantly from these diaries is the spirit of endurance and the celebration of the smallest of life’s joys.
