Several trends emerging from this analysis are discussed, along with possible implications for research. The paper also examines the major constraints to production of white maize and policy options that could help increase the output and quality of this crop throughout the developing countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication presents a GIS-based approach for revising the definitions of global maize production environments, called “mega-environments” (MEs), used by CIMMYT and its partners. A cluster analysis was performed on climate data, representing a four-month growing season, for key maize producing locations. Assuming rainfed production, the onset of the growing season was determined based on the month when the ratio of precipitation over potential evapotranspiration exceeds 0.5. Diagnostic criteria for mapping MEs were based on cluster analysis results and expert knowledge. The resulting maps can be used to select appropriate target environments for maize germplasm and trials, as well as in priority setting and site selection for global maize breeding programs.

Book excerpt: FAO’s best-selling 2011 publication, Save and Grow, proposed a new paradigm of agriculture, one that is both highly productive and environmentally sustainable. This new book looks at the application of “Save and Grow” practices and technologies to production of the world’s key food security crops – maize, rice and wheat. With examples drawn from developing countries worldwide, it shows how eco-friendly farming systems are helping smallholder producers to boost cereal yields, improve their incomes and livelihoods, conserve natural resources, reduce negative impacts on the environment, and build resilience to climate change. The book will be a valuable reference for policymakers and development practitioners guiding the transition to sustainable food and agriculture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, policy makers have been paying more attention to the problems of small farmers in developing countries with the idea of increasing their pro-duction and standard of living. The policy makers' objec-tives are twofold: I 1 I to help those whose welfare is materially below the rest of society, and 121 to help a coun-try increase its agricultural production. With adequate agricultural policies, these two objectives are mutually reinforcing. For example, increased food production gives farm households additional food for consumption and surpluses for sale. Farmers can then use the money from these sales to buy items they do not produce, and the buyers of farm products benefit from the increased sup-plies.

Book excerpt: Maize is a staple cereal after wheat and rice. It is an important source of carbohydrate, protein, iron, vitamin B and minerals for many poor people in the world. In developing countries maize is a major source of income in resource-poor farmers. As maize is used both as silage and as crop residue and the grains of maize are usually used for food, starch and oil extraction industrially, the demand for maize is rising day by day. Therefore, it is imperative for improvement of maize to meet the increasing demand. This book entitled "Maize - Production and Use" highlights the importance of maize and the improved management approaches for improving the productivity of maize in the era of changing climate.

This book was released on 1979 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Of the 94 developing nations, 24 are categorized as rapid-growth, where food production expanded faster than population. In a study of 16 rapid-growth countries, wide variation was evident in sources of growth, patterns of growth, patterns of agricultural and economic development, geography, demography, and income level. Population growth and income are significant in raising demand for a wide variety of staple foods, resulting in increased production and importation. Main crops varied by region: maize in South America, wheat in the Middle East, and rice in Asia. Production increase is based on area expansion and output per hectare, and reflects changing crop patterns as well as new technology in fertilization and irrigation. Approaches to increasing the world food supply must take into account physical and economic conditions and potential problems, such as soil management.
