Book Synopsis Impacts on State and Local Agencies for Maintaining Traffic Signs Within Minimum Retroreflectivity Guidelines by : Hugh W. McGee
Download or read book Impacts on State and Local Agencies for Maintaining Traffic Signs Within Minimum Retroreflectivity Guidelines written by Hugh W. McGee and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has developed guidelines for minimum retroreflectivity levels for four groups of signs: 1) yellow/orange-on-black warning signs, 2) black-on-white regulatory signs, 3) white-on-red regulatory signs, and 4) white-on-green guide signs. The report presents data on percentage of signs by the various types of retroreflective sheeting for both States and local agencies, a distribution of age of signs by type of sheeting, and the percentage of signs that would not meet the minimum retroreflectivity values. The report also presents a summary of the data and comments provided by the participating agencies related to the minimum retroreflectivity values.

Download or read book An Implementation Guide for Minimum Retroreflectivity Requirements for Traffic Signs written by Hugh W. McGee and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To assist agencies in developing a cost-effective program for timely replacement of ineffective signs, this document was prepared. Initially the report describes the principles of retroreflectivity, the types of retroreflective materials, and the proposed minimum retroreflectivity guidelines. Then, the report presents the concept of a sign management system, and provides guidance for developing a sign inventory, conducting sign inspections, and maintaining signs. The report concludes with discussing options that State and local agencies can follow for replacing their ineffective signs and offers a minimum and desirable program.
Book Synopsis Traffic Sign Conspicuity by : Antoine Bricker
Download or read book Traffic Sign Conspicuity written by Antoine Bricker and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book may be of use to traffic engineers and researchers who are concerned with the conspicuity of traffic signs. The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices advises that, "Signs should be placed on the right side of the roadway where they are easily recognized and understood by road users." Guidance is provided on the spacing and prioritization of signs, and in some conditions, additional steps may be needed to ensure that signs are conspicuous. This book also provides federal regulations that have been put in place to ensure that traffic signs are visible at night, and discusses impacts on state and local agencies of maintaining traffic sign retroreflectivity.
Book Synopsis Maintenance Management of Street and Highway Signs by : Richard A. Cunard
Download or read book Maintenance Management of Street and Highway Signs written by Richard A. Cunard and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1990 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to traffic engineers, maintenance managers, sign shop supervisors, and others interested in the maintenance of street and highway signs. Detailed information is presented on the current practices of state and local governments in managing the maintenance of street and highway signs within their jurisdictions. The maintenance of street and highway signs is viewed as a means for improving the effectiveness of a signing system. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the maintenance practices of several state and local highway agencies along with the rationale for those practices. It covers inspection, refurbishing, and replacement practices, along with information on equipment and personnel requirements.

Book excerpt: The Minnesota LRRB has developed a Sign Retroreflectivity Toolkit that is designed to provide local governments, especially small cities and townships, with guidance on FHWA's sign retroreflectivity deadlines as well as resources they can use to meet these deadlines. This toolkit focuses primarily on FHWA's first deadline: By January 2012: Agencies must establish and implement a sign assessment or management method to maintain minimum levels of sign retro reflectivity. The toolkit includes a variety of resources: County Letter - Letter to be sent by County Engineers to small local agencies within their county, to notify them of requirements and resources. Other Agency Letter - Letter to be sent by other agencies as a follow-up to the County letter, to stress the importance of addressing FHWA requirements. MN MUTCD Requirements. Summary of FHWA guides: Methods for Maintaining Traffic Sign Retroreflectivity and Know Your Retro2007. Appendix A: Examples of Sign Inventory/Inspection Forms. Appendix B: Examples of Sign Inspection/Replacement Policies/Procedures. Appendix C: Examples of Sign Management Agreements. The letters provided in this report can be downloaded from the LRRB website (See URL above) in electronic Microsoft Word format, so that agencies can edit them for their specific situation.
