Nonetheless, women in selected communities in Tamale, located in the Northern Region of Ghana, face various forms of discrimination that have proven to be strong barriers to their upward social mobility. This study builds on previous research studies, such as one conducted by UNICEF (2010), that suggest many young women in Africa engage in domestic work at the expense of their education. The scope of this paper includes an exploration of how women in the selected communities negotiate gender and educational equality and the resulting consequences on their personal lives. It also looks at how the women in this area navigate various challenges at home, in school, and in their communities, as well as the roles their parents and community leaders play in this journey. The purpose of this study is to learn from women's experiences and identify mechanisms that may be used to address impediments to gender equality at the intersection of women's education, empowerment, and economic development. Through focus-group discussions, one-on-one interviews, and participant-observation, findings suggest that women are not only resourceful and self-reliant, but they are equally desirous to improve their life skills and livelihood given the right opportunity. The study recommends concerted efforts from both government and nongovernmental organizations directed at eliminating the challenges/barriers to empowering women in the communities identified.

The notion of gender equality is further obscured by cultural underpinnings and socialization. The study of gender equality in Ghana is clearly at its inception, as can be seen from Ghanaian constitutional provisions, from Ghanaian cases involving women, and from personal experiences of Ghanaian women. Some definition of, and accounting for gender inequality is vital to the empowering of Ghanaian women in particular, and to the development of Ghana as a whole. An examination of Canada's Charter litigation may provide insights for a review of Ghana's formal equality guarantees so that they become meaningful to Ghanaian women. In addition, the activities of women's groups in providing education and access to the judicial system; as well as the sensitisation of the Ghanaian populace to gender issues may be a start towards achieving equality for Ghanaian women. In this way Ghana may be better placed to meet the mandate of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, and be better able to achieve equality for its women.

The relationship between the components of empowerment and small-scale irrigation are placed within a larger context of social change underlying these relationships. Finally, this paper explores the ways that the introduction of modern technologies for small-scale irrigation may contribute to women’s empowerment.

This book uncovers the multiple political dynamics that influence governments to adopt and implement gender equity policies, pushing the debate beyond simply the role of women’s inclusion in influencing policy. Bringing the politics of development into discussion with feminist literature on women's empowerment, the book proposes the new concept of ‘power domains’ as a way to capture how inter-elite bargaining, coalitional politics, and social movement activism combine to shape policies that promote gender equity. In particular, the book investigates the conditions under which countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia have adopted legislation against domestic violence, which remains widespread in many developing countries. The book demonstrates that women’s presence in formal politics and policy spaces does not fully explain the pace in adopting and implementing domestic violence law. Underlying drivers of change within broader domains of power also include the role of clientelistic politics and informal processes of bargaining, coalition-building, and persuasion; the discursive framing of gender-equitable ideas; and how transnational norms influence women’s political inclusion and gender-inclusive policy outcomes. The comparative approach across Uganda, Rwanda, South Africa, Ghana, India, and Bangladesh demonstrates how advancing gender equality varies by political context and according to the interests surrounding a particular issue.
