In order to ensure the right balance of facts with creative liberty, the author needs to have the skills of a good biographer, as well as, a novelist. A biographer is a researcher and collector of memories; whereas, a novelist is mainly a dreamer who can spin stories out of nothingness. But, the author of a biographical novel needs to be an amalgamation of both, creativity and fact-finding, both. S/he needs to diligently record all the facts related to the protagonist's life. Even though s/he may take creative liberty while writing the novel, it cannot be forgotten that finally it is a 'biography', which must do justice to the happenings in the protagonist's life. Dates, timelines, family members, enemies, relations, important incidents etc., need to be mentioned properly, without taking them into the ambit of creative liberty. Only after doing so much preparation does a novelist become set to write a good biographical novel. What prompts a biographer to turn a person's life account into a novel, instead of taking the easy route and narrating his/her story in a straight way? It is the excitement of interspersing an author's gift of imagination and ingenuity with the actualities of the protagonist's life. However, it is a tightrope walk to be able to exercise one's creative abilities, while staying true to the researcher within. Only the perfect alchemy of both these factors can result in an excellent biographical novel." – M.W. Dhond An inspirational biographical novel about the life, times, personality, and revolutionary thoughts of the great man, Jyotirao Phule: 'MAHATMA'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The opportunity to pen this introduction to my debut book, "GENDER, SCHOOL AND SOCIETY," is one that fills me with excitement. Consideration of gender in social issues is the topic of this book. Being a boy or a girl has varied implications and experiences in different cultures, eras, and communities. Due to centuries of discrimination, she learned to view herself as a lesser human being and an insignificant tool in the hands of her male counterpart. Her sense of self and confidence were slowly eroded as a result. The more she tried to hide her inner emotions, the more entangled her authentic self became in her predetermined social roles. For almost twenty years, organisations worldwide and governmental strategy statements have prioritised the reduction of gender disparity. In addition to guaranteeing women's right to vote and other civil liberties, the Constitution of India also allows for positive discrimination on the part of the state in favour of women. Our democratic government has enacted laws, development policies, plans, and programmes to help women succeed in a variety of fields. To further ensure women's rights, India has signed on to and ratified a number of international agreements and human rights instruments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bilingual relationship between the English and the Indian vernaculars has long been crucial to the construction of ideology as well as cultural and political hierarchies. Print was vital for colonial literacy; it was thereby instrumental in initiating a shift in the relation between 'high' and 'low' languages. Here, Dr Naregal examines the relationship between linguistic hierarchies, textual practices and power in colonial western India. Whereas most studies of colonialism focus on India's 'high' literary culture, this book looks at how local intellectuals exploited their 'middling' position through such initiatives as the establishment of newspapers and of influential channels of communication. How was the 'native' intelligentsia able to achieve a position of ideological influence? Dr Naregal shows that, despite their minority position, such people negotiated the arenas of education policy, the press and voluntary associations to advance their social class. In doing this, she sheds light on the process of self-definition among the Indian intelligentsia before anticolonial thinking articulated its hegemonic claims as a nationalistic discourse.

Book excerpt: India has a rich literary assemblage produced by its many different regional traditions, religious faiths, ethnic subcultures and linguistic groups. The published literature of the 20th century is a particularly interesting subject and is the focus of this book, as it represents the provocative conjuncture of the transitions of Indian modernity. This reference book surveys the major regional literatures of contemporary India in the context of the country's diversity and heterogeneity. Chapters are devoted to particular regions, and the arrangement of the work invites comparisons of literary traditions. Chapters provide extensive bibliographies of primary works, thus documenting the creative achievement of numerous contemporary Indian authors. Some chapters cite secondary works as well, and the volume concludes with a list of general works providing further information. An introductory essay overviews theoretical concerns, ideological and aesthetic considerations, developments in various genres, and the history of publishing in regional literatures. The introduction provides a context for approaching the chapters that follow, each of which is devoted to the literature of a particular region. Each chapter begins with a concise introductory section. The body of each chapter is structured according to social and historical events, literary forms, or broad descriptive or analytic trends, depending on the particular subject matter. Each chapter then closes with an extensive bibliography of primary works, thus documenting the rich literary tradition of the region. Some chapters also cite secondary sources as an aid to the reader. The final chapters of the book address special topics, such as sub-cultural literatures, or the interplay between literature and film. A list of additional sources of general information concludes the volume.
