Book excerpt: This book investigates the stability and vibrations of conductive, perfectly conductive and superconductive thin bodies in electromagnetic fields. It introduces the main principles and derives basic equations and relations describing interconnected mechanical and electromagnetic processes in deformable electro conductive bodies placed in an external inhomogeneous magnetic field and under the influence of various types of force interactions. Basic equations and relations are addressed in the nonlinear formulation and special emphasis is placed on the mechanical interactions of superconducting thin-body plates with magnetic fields.

Book Synopsis Mechanics Today by : S. Nemat-Nasser
Download or read book Mechanics Today written by S. Nemat-Nasser and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanics Today, Volume 4 focuses on solid mechanics and applied mathematics. This book is divided into six chapters. Chapter I provides a general description of the basic features and relevant concepts of mixed boundary-value problems in mechanics. The problem of crack extension in a solid under arbitrary loads is discussed in Chapter II, emphasizing the crack growth that leads from a planar to a nonplanar configuration. The third chapter reviews various methods of solving the scattering of elastic waves by inclusions. The interactions of electromagnetic field with deformable bodies in motion are elaborated in Chapter IV, while problems involving solids carrying high electric currents or being placed in high magnetic fields are deliberated in Chapter V. The last chapter concentrates on the implications of the second law of thermodynamics, and consequences of thermodynamic material stability and its corresponding restrictions on the evolutionary equations for internal variables. This publication is useful to specialists, but is also beneficial to non-experts with sufficient background in applied mechanics.
Book Synopsis Magnetoelastic Waves by : Gevorg Baghdasaryan
Download or read book Magnetoelastic Waves written by Gevorg Baghdasaryan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-28 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights key methods for the mathematical modeling and solution of nonstationary dynamic problems in the theory of magnetoelasticity. It also reveals the richness of physical effects caused by the interaction of electromagnetic and mechanical phenomena in both conducting non-ferromagnetic and dielectric magnetically active deformable bodies. The studies are limited to elastic bodies considering small deformations. The book consists of two parts, the first of which derives the system of equations for describing magnetoelasticity, the surface conditions, and equations describing the perturbations behavior of non-ferromagnetic conducting media interacting with external magnetic fields. These equations are based on the main nonlinear equations and relations of mechanics and quasistatic electrodynamics of continuous media. On this basis, the book puts forward a number of qualitative and quantitative results, solving selected problems of magnetoelastic wave propagation. In turn, the second part considers surface waves in magnetostrictive and piezomagnetic media. It obtains the system of equations, surface conditions and state equations describing the perturbations behavior in magnetoactive ferromagnetic dielectric media interacting with external magnetic fields. Lastly, the book studies the excitations and propagation of new types of surface waves and oscillations in these media, conditioned by the magnetostrictive properties of the respective medium and its interaction with an external magnetic field.

Book Synopsis Stability and Vibrations of Internal Windings of High Current Super-conducting Solenoid Magnets by : Kosei Hara
Download or read book Stability and Vibrations of Internal Windings of High Current Super-conducting Solenoid Magnets written by Kosei Hara and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High field solenoid magnets may experience internal damage or eventually collapse due to the powerful magnetic fields they produce. Elastic deformations of the conductor and insulation in these magnets deserve attention because they can cause local damage that can lead to electrical breakdown. In conventional stress analysis of cylindrically wound magnets, the magnetic field gradient, or magnetic stiffness, is usually neglected. However, in this thesis the magnetic stiffness is shown to have a significant effect on the elastic stability and vibration of these magnets. One-turn and multi-turn superconducting rings were used to study the effects of deformations on stability and vibration. Both static and dynamic methods were used to determine the critical buckling currents. The dispersion of natural frequencies with increase in current and subsequent in-plane and out-of-plane buckling of the rings near the critical buckling current were observed. A model based on ring theory and magnetic stiffness was developed to explain experimental observations and showed a fair to good agreement between experimental and theoretical values of the buckling current. This model was used to evaluate the buckling current of 7- and 10-turn magnets. The analysis showed buckling concentrated in the outer turns. (Author).

Book Synopsis Elastic Stability and Vibration of Toroidal Magnets for Fusion Reactors. Final Report by :
Download or read book Elastic Stability and Vibration of Toroidal Magnets for Fusion Reactors. Final Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vibration and elastic stability of a set of discrete superconducting toroidal field magnets arranged to form a ''bumpy'' torus is examined. The mutual destabilizing magnetic forces between magnet pairs are calculated using a numerical differential inductance technique. It is shown that the mutual attractive magnetic forces can produce elastic buckling of the entire toroidal set. The vibration modes of the set are also found as functions of the coil current. The response of the set of magnets to an earthquake type motion of the toroidal base is calculated. The calculations have been incorporated in a computer code which accompanies the report. Measurements are made of the lateral stiffness of a flexible, planar, superconducting coil between two rigid coils in series. These tests show a dramatic decrease in the natural bending frequency with subsequent elastic instability or ''buckling'' at a critical value of the current in the coils. These observations support a magnetoelastic analysis which shows that proposed designs, of toroidal field coils for Tokamak fusion reactors, have insufficient lateral support for mechanical stability of the magnets. Book Synopsis Magnetoelastic Instabilities and Vibrations of Superconducting-magnet Systems by :
Download or read book Magnetoelastic Instabilities and Vibrations of Superconducting-magnet Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the research accomplished under Depatment of Energy/NSF grants associated with the structural design of superconducting magnets for magnetic fusion reactors. The main results pertain to magnetomechanical instabilities in toroidal and poloidal field magnets for proposed fusion reactors. One major accomplishment was the building and testing of a 1/75th scale superconducting structural model of a 16 coil Tokamak reactor. Using this model the buckling of toroidal and poloidal field coils under different constraints was observed. A series of dynamic tests were performed, including the effect of currents on natural frequencies, poloidal-toroidal coil interaction, and buckling induced superconducting-normal quench of the coils. The stability of poloidal coils in a toroidal magnet field were investigated with the 16 coil torus. A superconducting poloidal coil was observed to become statically unstable or buckle as the current approached a certain value. Magnetoelastic buckling of other magnet systems such as a yin-yang pair of magnets, Ioffe coils, and discrete coil solenoids were also studied.
Book Synopsis Aeroelastic Vibrations and Stability of Plates and Shells by : Sergey D. Algazin
Download or read book Aeroelastic Vibrations and Stability of Plates and Shells written by Sergey D. Algazin and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-12-11 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Back-action of aerodynamics onto structures such as wings cause vibrations and may resonantly couple to them, thus causing instabilities (flutter) and endangering the whole structure. By careful choices of geometry, materials and damping mechanisms, hazardous effects on wind engines, planes, turbines and cars can be avoided. Besides an introduction into the problem of flutter, new formulations of flutter problems are given as well as a treatise of supersonic flutter and of a whole range of mechanical effects. Numerical and analytical methods to study them are developed and applied to the analysis of new classes of flutter problems for plates and shallow shells of arbitrary plane form. Specific problems discussed in the book in the context of numerical simulations are supplemented by Fortran code examples (available on the website).
