Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the years since this book was first published in 1993 there have very few developments in the technology of magnetic particle inspection apart from improvements in instrumentation which has made the measurement of peak values of time varying currents practicable. The major changes have arisen from health and safety and environmental concerns. These involve chemicals and exposure of personnel to air-borne electromagnetic fields and long wave ultraviolet (UY.A). The changes in the acceptability of certain volatile halogenated hydrocar bons which led to the banning of 1, 1, 1 thichloroethane in 1995 were evident in 1993. The present discussions concerning the emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in general was also current and has now reached a stage where the effects of these deliberations will become evident over the next few years. Concerns over the exposure of personnel to airborne electromagnetic fields has been current for some years as has discussions to the effects of long wave ultraviolet (UY.A) on human skin. Recommendations as to maximum permit ted exposures over periods of time to both of these phenomena have been put forward and will doubtless form the basis of future legislation on the matter. A number of new specifications have appeared notably EN (European) and ISO specifications and some of these are still in preparation. Generally their impact will be minimal since these specifications are largely derived from existing documentation.

Book excerpt: "Magnetic Particle Inspection: Techniques, Applications, Interviews Q&A, and Glossary" is a complete guide to the non-destructive testing technique of magnetic particle inspection (MPI). This NDT book covers the fundamental principles of MPI, including the types of magnetic fields used, the properties of magnetic particles, and the various types of equipment used in the process. In addition to the basic principles, the magnetic particle testing book also covers advanced topics such as selecting the appropriate current for wet or dry inspection, the use of UV light in MPI, and the demagnetization process. To provide readers with practical insights into the application of MPI, the magnetic particle inspection book includes interviews with experts in the field, who share their experiences and tips on best practices. Finally, the book features a glossary of MPI terms and definitions, making it a valuable reference for both beginners and experienced practitioners. Whether you are new to the field of Magnetic testing or looking to enhance your existing knowledge, "Magnetic Particle Inspection: Techniques, Applications, Interviews Q&A, and Glossary" is an essential resource that will help you develop a comprehensive understanding of this important non-destructive testing technique.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a comprehensive overview of recent developments in magnetic particle imaging (MPI), a novel imaging modality. Using various static and oscillating magnetic fields, and tracer materials made from iron oxide nanoparticles, MPI can perform background-free measurements of the particles’ local concentration. The method exploits the nonlinear remagnetization behavior of the particles and has the potential to surpass current methods for the detection of iron oxide in terms of sensitivity and spatiotemporal resolution. Starting from an introduction to the technology, the topics addressed include setting up an imaging device, assessment of image quality, development of new MPI tracer materials, and the first preclinical results. This is the first book to be published on magnetic particle imaging, and it will be an invaluable source of information for everyone with an interest in this exciting new modality.

Book excerpt: This part of GB/T 15822 specifies the general principles for the magnetic particle testing of ferromagnetic materials. The magnetic particle testing is mainly used to test the discontinuity of surface openings (especially cracks) and also the near-surface discontinuity, but its sensitivity drops quickly with depth. This part defines surface preparation of tested workpieces, magnetization technology and the requirements for and application of testing media, as well as the recording and interpretation of results arising therefrom. No provision has been made for the acceptance criteria. As for the magnetic particle testing on special items, additional requirements will be specified according to the product standard. The residual magnetic method is non-applicable to this part.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive book covers the five major NDT methods - liquid penetrants, eddy currents, magnetic particles, radiography and ultrasonics in detail and also considers newer methods such as acoustic emission and thermography and discusses their role in on-line monitoring of plant components. Analytical techniques such as reliability studies and statistical quality control are considered in terms of their ability to reduce inspection costs and limit down time. A useful chapter provides practical guidance on selecting the right method for a given situation.

Book excerpt: This book is intended to help satisfy an urgent requirement for up-to date comprehensive texts at graduate and senior undergraduate levels on the subjects in non-destructive testing (NDT). The subject matter here is confined to electrical and magnetic methods, with emphasis on the widely used eddy current and magnetic flux leakage methods (including particle inspection), but proper attention is paid to other techniques, such as microwave and AC field applications, which are rapidly growing in importance. Theoretical analyses relating to the various methods are discussed and the depths of presentation are often governed by whether or not the information is readily available elsewhere. Thus, for example, a considerable amount of space is devoted to eddy current theory at what the author considers to be a reasonable standard and not, as usually experienced, in either a too elementary manner or at a level appreciated only by a postgraduate theoretical physicist. The inclusion of the introductory chapter is intended to acquaint the reader with some of the philosophy of NDT and to compare, briefly, the relative performances of the more important methods of testing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This updated Second Edition covers current state-of-the-art technology and instrumentation The Second Edition of this well-respected publication provides updated coverage of basic nondestructive testing (NDT) principles for currently recognized NDT methods. The book provides information to help students and NDT personnel qualify for Levels I, II, and III certification in the NDT methods of their choice. It is organized in accordance with the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Recommended Practice No. SNT-TC-1A (2001 Edition). Following the author's logical organization and clear presentation, readers learn both the basic principles and applications for the latest techniques as they apply to a wide range of disciplines that employ NDT, including space shuttle engineering, digital technology, and process control systems. All chapters have been updated and expanded to reflect the development of more advanced NDT instruments and systems with improved monitors, sensors, and software analysis for instant viewing and real-time imaging. Keeping pace with the latest developments and innovations in the field, five new chapters have been added: * Vibration Analysis * Laser Testing Methods * Thermal/Infrared Testing * Holography and Shearography * Overview of Recommended Practice No. SNT-TC-1A, 2001 Each chapter covers recommended practice topics such as basic principles or theory of operation, method advantages and disadvantages, instrument description and use, brief operating and calibrating procedures, and typical examples of flaw detection and interpretation, where applicable.
