Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: L.M.Montgomery grew up in Prince Edward Island, a real place of "politics and potatoes." But it's her fictional island, a richly textured imaginative landscape that has captivated a world of readers since 1908, when Anne of Green Gables became the first of Montgomery's long string of bestsellers. In this wide-ranging and highly readable book, Elizabeth Waterston uses the term "magic" to suggest that peculiar, indefinable combination of attributes that unpredictably results in creative genius. Montgomery's intelligence, her drive, and her sense of humour are essential components of this success. Waterston also features what Montgomery called her "dream life," a "strange inner life of fancy which had always existed side by side with my outer life." This special ability to look beyond the veil, to access vibrant inner vistas, produced deceptively layered fictions out of a life that saw not just its share of both fame and ill fortune, but also what Waterston calls "dark passions." A true reader's guide, Magic Island explores the world of L.M. Montgomery in a way never done before. Each chapter of Magic Island discusses a different Montgomery book, following their progression chronologically. Waterston draws parallels between Montgomery's internal "island," her personal life, her professional career, and the characters in her novels. Designed to be read alongside the new biography of Montgomery by Mary Rubio, this is the first book to reinterpret Montgomery's writing in light of important new information about her life. A must-read for any Montgomery fan, Magic Island offers a fresh and insightful look at the world of L.M. Montgomery and the "magic" of artistic creation.

Book excerpt: Step into the wonderful world of the Magic Islands for the third time, as the magical, mystical educational series continues... Still too much of a handful, even when captive, the naughty Purple Wizards are once again exiled for their environmental crimes - this time to a mythical land which shouldn't exist, a land of extinct animals and ancient fictional beasts. A land where time has suddenly stood still, caused by the same lunar eclipse which brought them there... Wizard Ambrosious needs help to start time up again - or half the Land of Now and Then will be in perpetual darkness, the other half perpetual light, and nothing will grow or thrive. He again needs the help of a particular group of schoolchildren, from a particular school in White Stone Town, Wales... So, Stefan and Megan, this time with their friend Trevor, are called on once more to save the Magic Islands from climate catastrophe, by helping to find a missing magical Box of Secrets and its Golden Key. Their investigation will introduce them to a host of long-extinct animals of Planet Earth: a Gigantopithecus, a Dodo, a Parasaulophus, and the inhabitants - both terrifying and friendly - of fearsome Dinosaur Country. Join them as both they and the Purple Wizards learn all about these real and legendary creatures, finding friendship and purpose along the way - and perhaps saving the Land of Now and Then from its inevitable end...

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2004 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: Distinction, James Cook University (James Cook University), course: Strangers in the South Pacific, language: English, abstract: The tradition of island imaginings in European thought existed long before explorers were actually able to reach far away islands and give first-hand accounts of their encounters and observations. Myths of islands are of an extreme age and deeply rooted in European culture, where they were subjected to ongoing transformation by writers of various periods in history. Story telling about islands stretches back thousands of years: from early island myths in antiquity, to explorers, poets and philosophers in the Age of Discovery; from idealizing nature and islanders, to islands that acted as vehicles for social criticism and reflection on social conditions in Europe. The island setting was originally employed as a site and inspiration for spiritual, emotional, or psychological transformation, as a kind of incubator for the initiation and fostering of an individual’s growth. The specific workings of the archetypal place as an agent of change involved a morally challenging confrontation in a magical setting. Appropriate conduct and prudent behaviour opposite the unfamiliar, followed by the resolve of a potentially dangerous situation or conflict, enabled the shipwrecked to finally leave the island and return to their respective societies. This essay provides a historical overview of the island tradition in European literature and links it specifically to the islands of the imagination where the writer travels behind or in front of his or her time envisaging a better world – utopias often take the form of a subversive analysis of contemporary society. Islands and island dwellers were often envisaged as superior versions of the countries and peoples who imagined them, an idea that survived and came to the fore in the positivist scientific and rationalist discourse of the Enlightenment. Island-stories are always set distant in time and place and the remoteness and finite dimensions of islands seemed perfect for constructing a compressed and complete universe, a miniature world, solely governed by the poet’s ideals and ideas.
