Book excerpt: Excerpt from Magdalen College Oxford Every one who desires to read, much more to write, the history of Magdalen College, will find himself under special obligation to three men, all at different times Fellows of the College - Dr. J. R. Bloxam, Dr. W. D. Macray, and Mr. H. A. Wilson. The more he himself comes to know, the more fully will he appreciate the merit of their work, and the deeper will be his sense of gratitude. These pages are indeed little more than an attempt to popularise some of the results of their solid and conscientious labours. To the pious memory of the first, Dr. Bloxam, I would fain add a word of special tribute. He was in this field a genuine pioneer, to whom the College can never be too grateful. An Eastern poet sings, "To the lover of the rose, the very dust of its petals is dear." So was it with Dr. Bloxam and the lilies of Magdalen. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Register of the Members of St. Mary Magdalen College, Oxford, From the Foundation of the College, Vol. 2: Fellows; 1522-1575 The mode of election to vacant Fellowships followed throughout the sixteenth century, and which prevailed even into the seventeenth, was without regard to the actual county vacant, if only the person elected was a native of any one of the counties provided for by the Founder. Thus, a native of Wilts would be elected, say, for Sussex, and then would be transferred to his own county when opportunity allowed. This was even done with respect to the special Yorkshire foundation, although rightly regarded by some as a scandal, and it was con sequently included in the charges brought against Humphrey. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Register of the Members of St. Mary Magdalen College, Oxford, Vol. 8: Fellows; Indexes The 'first series, by Dr. Bloxam, of the Foundation Members (beginning with the Choristers and ending With the Demies) is in seven volumes, of which the first was published in 1853 and the seventh in 1881; the Index in 1885. The first volume of this series (containing the Fellows to 1910) was published in 1894 and the seventh in 1911, thus extending to the same length in time as its pre decessor. The Index has been divided into three classes for the sake of facility of reference. A list of names of places and countries mentioned has been added which was not included in the former Index, but which has been often found to be wanted. In this, under the head of the College itself, I have given. Under separate sub-headings, the details of the Chapel, Hall, Library, School, Buildings, and Plate, which at once afford a brief summary View of the history, while a mass of other details which could not be classified are under the head of M z'scellaneous. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from It Is Never to Late to Mend George Fielding cultivated a small farm in Berkshire. This position is not so enviable as it was. Years ago, the farmers of England, had they been as intelligent as other traders, could have purchased the English soil by means of the huge percentage it offered them. But now, I grieve to say, a farmer must be as sharp as his neighbors, or like his neighbors he will break. What do I say? There are soils and situations where, in spite of intelligence and sobriety, he is almost sure to break; just as there are shops where the lively, the severe, the industrious, the lazy, are fractured alike. This last fact I make mine by perambulating a certain great street every three months, and observing how name succeeds to name as wave to wave. Readers hardened by the Times will not perhaps go so far as to weep over a body of traders for being reduced to the average condition of all other traders. But the individual trader, who fights for existence against unfair odds, is to be pitied whether his shop has plate glass or a barn door to it; and he is the more to be pitied when he is sober, intelligent, proud, sensitive, and unlucky. George Fielding was all these, who, a few years ago, assisted by his brother William, tilled "The Grove" - as nasty a little farm as any in Berkshire. Discontented as he was, the expression hereinbefore written would have seemed profane to young Fielding, for a farmer's farm and a sailor's ship have always something sacred in the sufferer's eyes, though one sends one to jail, and the other the other to Jones. It was four hundred acres, all arable, and most of it poor sour land. George's father had one hundred acres grass with it, but this had been separated six years ago. There was not a tree, nor even an old stump to show for this word "Grove." But in the country oral tradition still flourishes. There had been trees in "The Grove," only the title had outlived the timber a few centuries. On the morning of our tale George Fielding might have been seen near his own homestead, conversing with the Honorable Frank Winchester. This gentleman was a character that will be common some day, but was nearly unique at the date of our story. Ho had not an extraordinary intellect, but he had great natural gayety, and under that he had enormous good sense; his good sense was really brilliant, he had a sort of universal healthy mind that I can't understand how people get. He was deeply in love with a lady who returned his passion, but she was hopelessly out of his reach, because he had not much money or expectations; instead of sitting down railing, or sauntering about whining, what did me the Honorable Frank Winchester? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. The chapters may therefore appear somewhat disconnected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Register of the Members of St. Mary Magdalen College, Oxford, Vol. 1: From the Foundation of the College; Fellows, to the Year 1520 IN 1853 the first volume appeared of the Register of the Members of Saint Mmy Magdalen College, by John Rouse Bloxam, D.D., Fellow and Librarian. This volume contains the Choristers. Vols. II and III, published in 1857 and 1863, contain the Clerks, Chaplains, Organists, Schoolmasters, and Ushers, the second volume having also, by way of introduction, a very full and accurate history of the Chapel and the choral service, with an appendix of extracts from the Bursars' accounts relating to the same. In 1881 appeared the seventh volume of this series, being the fourth and last volume of the Register of Demies. A complete index of names in the seven volumes, compiled under the direction of the present writer, was published by the College two years afterwards. The book was the first of its kind; the materials were sought for in records hitherto neglected, or, at any rate, neglected since the time when Chandler wrote his careful and accurate se of W ayneflete; and the spirit which ani mated the author's researches was that of a true Oxford antiquary, united with an 'amor loci' which could not be exceeded. And while the greater part was in progress many sources of information which have since been laid open, through Catalogues and Calendars and the publica tions of societies, were unknown or inaccessible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial of Bishop Waynflete It is remarkable that the Memorial, which is here published for the first time from a manuscript in Heylin's own handwriting preserved in the Library of Magdalen College, Oxford, has escaped the notice of all his Biographers. It was probably written soon after the Death of Queen Anne, which is alluded to in stanza 107, and which mournful event took place on the 2nd of March, a. d. 1619, the very year in which the author was admitted perpetual fellow of 0;; Magdalen College. The notes with one or two exceptions are given from the Ms. Notwithstanding the excellent Notice and Republication of Barnard's Life of Heylyn in the 1st volume of his History of the Reformation, lately edited for the Ecclesiastical History Society by Mr Robertson, I have deemed that it would not be unacceptable to the Readers of the memorial to give them here certain Extracts "out of an account of Dr Heylyn's life written by himself to April 8th, 1645," copied by Anthony Wood from the original Ms., which, he mentions, was lent him by Mr Henry Heylyn of Minster Lovell, 8th July 1673. Mr Robertson alludes to these memoranda (Introductory notice xxv), but does not appear to have consulted the copy of them, which may be found among Wood's Mss, (E. 4.) in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
