Book excerpt: Never before had Madhesh or what is also called Terai region attracted as much national and international attention as it happened in last few years. This is mainly on account of the movement that the people in the region, popularly called Madheshis, have waged against the feudal state for its discriminatory treatment with them. In June 2015, however, three or four leaders of major political parties ganged up and decided to draft new constitution to perpetuate centuries old feudal rule. As such, the Madhesh-based political parties were excluded in each step of constitution making process. This was the reason why the Madheshis began to make protests against the constitution since the beginning. In the wake of protests, the Madheshis imposed general strike in Terai for six months and imposed border blockade for five months until the beginning of February 2016. At a time Kathmandu was making celebrations with a great fanfare on the eve of promulgation of constitution on September 20, 2015, the Madheshis were observing the occasion as black day. In the wake of suppressing Madheshi movement in 2015-16, nearly 60 people were killed and many more were injured. The struggle of the Madheshi people did not stop as yet. On March 6, 2017, five more Madheshi activists were killed at Rajbiraj for the only reason that they opposed elements that provoked Madheshi sentiments. Even after a year-and-half of the promulgation of new constitution, it could not be implemented. Of course, the constitution was amended, but it did not satisfy the Madheshi agitators for its failure to address their concerns. In their 11-point demands, the Madheshi Morcha leaders have made it amply clear as to what changes they want in the constitution. Also, the Federal Alliance, which is the alliance of 29 Madhesh-based and hill-Janajati groups, in their 26-point demands further clarified their stand on the constitution. The only solution to Madhesh problem is to amend the constitution, if not rewriting it altogether, to address the demands of agitating Madhesh-based political parties before holding local, provincial and parliamentary elections. The main demands of Madheshis, include re-drawing provincial boundaries, population-based elections, inclusive representation in each organ of state mechanism and removal of anomalies in citizenship related matter.Ever since the Madheshis launched agitation against the new constitution from June 2015, I published articles on each important event in different print and electronic media in Nepal and India. The present book is the collection of those articles. While going through those articles, certain facts related to the demands of the Madheshis have been repeated from one article to the other, but they were contextual. Moreover, the book presents picture of each important event that took place during the Madheshi movement. My articles during the Madhesh movement were published in noted papers and websites in Nepal and India, including in My Republica, The Daily Pioneer, and Business Standard. Besides, the articles on Madhesh were also published in websites of IDSA, VIF India, India Foundation, Catchnews.com and Observer Research Foundation (ORF).
