Book excerpt: The study of high energy heavy ion reactions includes the three principle a priori approaches used for central collisions, namely, hydrodynamics, cascade--Boltzman equation, and the classical equations of motion. While no clearly justified central or near central collisions are found, the classical equations of motion are used to illustrate some general features of these reactions. It is expected that the hot nuclear matter produced in such collisions is a dense, viscous, and thermally conductive fluid with important nonequilibrium and nonclassical features, rapidity, distribution, noncentral collisions, potential dependent effects for a given two-body scattering, and c.m. cross sections for a central collision with given parameters are among the properties considered. 12 references. A Review of the classical, quantum, and semi-classical theories of collision are given in the first part, while their applications to the atom and molecule collisions are given in the second part. The book is useful to scientists other than atom and molecular physicists, and is as general as possible, however, with the emphasis on the atom and molecule collisions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The broad field of molecular collisions is one of considerable current interest, one in which there is a great deal of research activity, both experi mental and theoretical. This is probably because elastic, inelastic, and reactive intermolecular collisions are of central importance in many of the fundamental processes of chemistry and physics. One small area of this field, namely atom-molecule collisions, is now beginning to be "understood" from first principles. Although the more general subject of the collisions of polyatomic molecules is of great im portance and intrinsic interest, it is still too complex from the viewpoint of theoretical understanding. However, for atoms and simple molecules the essential theory is well developed, and computational methods are sufficiently advanced that calculations can now be favorably compared with experimental results. This "coming together" of the subject (and, incidentally, of physicists and chemists !), though still in an early stage, signals that the time is ripe for an appraisal and review of the theoretical basis of atom-molecule collisions. It is especially important for the experimentalist in the field to have a working knowledge of the theory and computational methods required to describe the experimentally observable behavior of the system. By now many of the alternative theoretical approaches and computational procedures have been tested and intercompared. More-or-Iess optimal methods for dealing with each aspect are emerging. In many cases working equations, even schematic algorithms, have been developed, with assumptions and caveats delineated.

This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Faddeev equations, modified to remove long-range coupling between different channels, are solved in the total-angular-momentum representation for p[mu] + p collisions. S-wave elastic and hyperfine-transition cross sections are calculated with and without explicit inclusion of the hyperfine splitting [Delta]E. For hyperfine quenching the simpler approach without hyperfine splitting is found adequate at collision energies above about [Delta]E, but for elastic scattering it becomes adequate at somewhat higher energies. The present cross sections tend to fall in between earlier calculations done using a large Standard adiabatic expansion and those done using a two-state improved adiabatic expansion, but are closer to the former.

It also covers related topics, such as heavy-ion physics, neutrino physics and searches for new physics beyond the standard model. A joint CERN-Springer initiative, the "Particle Physics Reference Library" provides revised and updated contributions based on previously published material in the well-known Landolt-Boernstein series on particle physics, accelerators and detectors (volumes 21A, B1,B2,C), which took stock of the field approximately one decade ago. Central to this new initiative is publication under full open access

Book excerpt: The second edition of Applied Structural and Mechanical Vibrations: Theory and Methods continues the first edition’s dual focus on the mathematical theory and the practical aspects of engineering vibrations measurement and analysis. This book emphasises the physical concepts, brings together theory and practice, and includes a number of worked-out examples of varying difficulty and an extensive list of references. What’s New in the Second Edition: Adds new material on response spectra Includes revised chapters on modal analysis and on probability and statistics Introduces new material on stochastic processes and random vibrations The book explores the theory and methods of engineering vibrations. By also addressing the measurement and analysis of vibrations in real-world applications, it provides and explains the fundamental concepts that form the common background of disciplines such as structural dynamics, mechanical, aerospace, automotive, earthquake, and civil engineering. Applied Structural and Mechanical Vibrations: Theory and Methods presents the material in order of increasing complexity. It introduces the simplest physical systems capable of vibratory motion in the fundamental chapters, and then moves on to a detailed study of the free and forced vibration response of more complex systems. It also explains some of the most important approximate methods and experimental techniques used to model and analyze these systems. With respect to the first edition, all the material has been revised and updated, making it a superb reference for advanced students and professionals working in the field.
