Book excerpt: "This catalog, from one of the premier builders of American locomotives, is an outstanding example of the use of photography in 19th century advertising. Along with the Baldwin locomotive catalog of 1871/2, and the Grant catalog of the same period this is one of the earliest. The 22 collotypes from photographs are uncredited which is unusual for this early date in the US. As early collotypes they are extremely well done and show the work of master craftsmen. They are printed on light uncoated paper which is also somewhat unusual for the period."--Clark file 2012

Book excerpt: Winner of the Hilton Book Award from the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society The largest maker of heavy machinery in Gilded Age America and an important global exporter, the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia achieved renown as one of the nation's most successful and important firms. Relying on gifted designers and skilled craftsmen, Baldwin built thousands of standard and custom steam locomotives, ranging from narrow gauge 0-4-0 industrial engines to huge mallet compounds. John K. Brown analyzes the structure of railroad demand; the forces driving continual innovation in locomotive design; Baldwin's management systems, shop-floor skills, and career paths; and the evolution of production methods.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Locomotives and Locomotive Building: Being a Brief Sketch of the Growth of the Railroad System and of the Various Improvements in Locomotive Building in America Together With a History of the Origin and Growth of the Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works, Paterson, New Jersey The last catalogue of the Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works with a sketch of the origin and growth of that establishment, was published in 1876. Since then many changes have been made in the equipment of these Works and in the character, design, and dimensions of the locomotives turned out. To describe these adequately it was necessary to rewrite nearly the whole of the former volume. This work was entrusted to my hands by the officers of the Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works. As it was commenced during the fiftieth year that the establishment had been engaged in the manufacture of locomotives, it seemed a suitable time to give a somewhat full account of the origin and history of the Works, and of the evolution of the locomotives built in them during that period. Such an account has been carefully prepared, and consists very largely of what may be called a mechanical history of the work which has been done; which, it is thought, will be interesting to many readers, as it shows the successive steps which have led to the wonderful development of the locomotive in this country. It also indicates the extent to which the perfection of the modern American type of locomotive is due to the ingenuity, mechanical skill, and sound judgment of the founder of this establishment Mr. Thomas Rogers, and to his successor - Mr. William S. Hudson; Both of them have left a record of their genius and ability in their designs, which are imitated to-day, and which promise to survive until locomotives are superceded. Very complete data concerning the dimensions and performance of the locomotives which this establishment is now prepared to furnish are given by illustrations and tables in the latter part of the book, and as there is still considerable difference of Opinion and practice in calculating the capacity of locomotives, an explanatory chapter is given showing just how the calculations were made. Book excerpt: For all of the steam and diesel locomotives you can't see in person, or the ones you want to remember in all of their larger-than-life glory, this is the book to buy. From the steam age to the modern diesel era, locomotives are marvels of engineering and industrial design, brimming with power, movement, and man's ingenuity even when sitting still. Photographer Ken Boyd's approach to the locomotive is unlike that of any other photographer. Every aspect of his photographs, from bolts and conduits to sheet metal and windows is painstakingly evaluated and then digitally edited until it glows with clarity and brilliance. The results are images of locomotives bristling with details not visible in conventional locomotive photography. The Art of the Locomotive features 150 large-format plates depicting locomotives ranging from the diminutive steam engines of the middle nineteenth century to the steam and diesel behemoths that followed. Each plate is accompanied by a detailed caption describing the locomotive's history and technology. The machines included represent railroads from all over the United States and Canada, from the Great Lakes region to the Gulf of Mexico, from the east Coast to the West Coast. In addition, Boyd offers an appendix describing his photographic process, shedding light, as it were, on the method behind his fantastic imagery. Boyd's images are so incredibly sharp and breathtakingly rich, they have to be seen to be believed.
