Download or read book Post-Truth written by Lee McIntyre and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How we arrived in a post-truth era, when “alternative facts” replace actual facts, and feelings have more weight than evidence. Are we living in a post-truth world, where “alternative facts” replace actual facts and feelings have more weight than evidence? How did we get here? In this volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series, Lee McIntyre traces the development of the post-truth phenomenon from science denial through the rise of “fake news,” from our psychological blind spots to the public's retreat into “information silos.” What, exactly, is post-truth? Is it wishful thinking, political spin, mass delusion, bold-faced lying? McIntyre analyzes recent examples—claims about inauguration crowd size, crime statistics, and the popular vote—and finds that post-truth is an assertion of ideological supremacy by which its practitioners try to compel someone to believe something regardless of the evidence. Yet post-truth didn't begin with the 2016 election; the denial of scientific facts about smoking, evolution, vaccines, and climate change offers a road map for more widespread fact denial. Add to this the wired-in cognitive biases that make us feel that our conclusions are based on good reasoning even when they are not, the decline of traditional media and the rise of social media, and the emergence of fake news as a political tool, and we have the ideal conditions for post-truth. McIntyre also argues provocatively that the right wing borrowed from postmodernism—specifically, the idea that there is no such thing as objective truth—in its attacks on science and facts. McIntyre argues that we can fight post-truth, and that the first step in fighting post-truth is to understand it.

With his parents' support, he trained and paid his dues, proving himself to tiny crowds in the UK's Butlin circuit. At age twenty-two, McIntyre made his WWE debut and was touted by none other than WWE Chairman Vince McMahon as "The Chosen One" who would lead WWE into the future. With his destiny in the palm of his hands, Drew watched it all slip through his fingers. Through a series of ill-advised choices and family tragedy, Drew's life and career spiraled. As a surefire champ, he struggled under the pressure of expectations and was fired from the company. But the WWE Universe had not seen the last of this promising athlete. Facing a crossroads, the powerful Scotsman set a course to show the world the real Drew McIntyre."--

Book excerpt: The Eagle and the Dragon takes the reader on an epic journey of thousands of miles by sea and land across three continents. When Senator Aulus Aemilius Galba is tapped to lead the first Roman mission to China, he anticipates an easy path to fame and fortune. Gaius Lucullus sees a bright military future, but his reluctant centurion Antonius Aristides would rather be somewhere else. Translators Marcia Lucia and her brother Marcus were taken from their village in China to serve the Han court, abused and despised, hiding a horrible secret. A notorious Arab pirate, with a Roman price on his head and crucifixion in his future, shadows the entourage, seeking the wealthy prize of their treasure-laden ships. But Fate has other plans for these unlikely companions, sending them together on a journey that will take them thousands of miles by sea and land across the tapestry of the mysterious worlds at the close of the first century. From the storm-tossed Indian Ocean to the opulent Hanaean court, from the wild grassy steppes north of China to the forbidding peaks of the Pamir Mountains of Bactria, they fight for their lives, hoping to find the road that will lead them back to Rome.
Book Synopsis How to Talk to a Science Denier by : Lee McIntyre
Download or read book How to Talk to a Science Denier written by Lee McIntyre and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-08-17 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can we change the minds of science deniers? Encounters with flat earthers, anti-vaxxers, coronavirus truthers, and others. "Climate change is a hoax--and so is coronavirus." "Vaccines are bad for you." These days, many of our fellow citizens reject scientific expertise and prefer ideology to facts. They are not merely uninformed--they are misinformed. They cite cherry-picked evidence, rely on fake experts, and believe conspiracy theories. How can we convince such people otherwise? How can we get them to change their minds and accept the facts when they don't believe in facts? In this book, Lee McIntyre shows that anyone can fight back against science deniers, and argues that it's important to do so. Science denial can kill. Drawing on his own experience--including a visit to a Flat Earth convention--as well as academic research, McIntyre outlines the common themes of science denialism, present in misinformation campaigns ranging from tobacco companies' denial in the 1950s that smoking causes lung cancer to today's anti-vaxxers. He describes attempts to use his persuasive powers as a philosopher to convert Flat Earthers; surprising discussions with coal miners; and conversations with a scientist friend about genetically modified organisms in food. McIntyre offers tools and techniques for communicating the truth and values of science, emphasizing that the most important way to reach science deniers is to talk to them calmly and respectfully--to put ourselves out there, and meet them face to face.

This book was released on 2022-07-02T22:59:00Z with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I had worked for the Wolf Project in Yellowstone in the spring of 1998, and had transferred to a summer job with the Druid pack in January 2000. I had grown up in New England, and was used to harsh winters. But in January 2000, I experienced what winter weather is like in Yellowstone. #2 I observed the lowest-ranking Druid female, 106, digging into deep snow to catch a vole. She then pounced on a nearby spot and tried to pin down a vole with her front paw. She missed, so she dug at that site, then stuck her head into the excavation. #3 In February, one of the Druids’ lower-ranking females, 105, went to 21. He sniffed her rear end, then walked off, apparently uninterested. Soon after that, 42 approached him, wagged her tail, then moved it aside, exposing her rear end. Called tail aversion, it is a signal that the female is getting ready to breed. #4 The Druid pack got back to normal life in late February, with 21 enjoying his sons’ company. I had never seen 40 act playfully with lower-ranking pack members before, but she did not fear them because they were all males.

Sample Book Insights: #1 I was to be the world’s only official wolf interpreter. But government funding did not come through for the position, so I had to give it up. I proposed that the position be privately funded, and it worked. #2 I was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, in the 1950s. I spent my first ten years in the nearby small rural town of Billerica. I had an idyllic childhood there, spending hours outdoors. I became increasingly fascinated with wildlife. #3 I spent many summers in Alaska, and in 1975, the Alaska Legislature asked the federal government to officially change the name of the park to Denali. The name was not to change until 1980, but Denali was the name commonly used in Alaska at that time. #4 I was a migrant worker during those years, moving from job to job. I spent fifteen summers in Denali and three in Glacier National Park, watching and learning about wolves. I was asked to write a book about them, and in 1993 I published A Society of Wolves: National Parks and the Battle over the Wolf.

Sample Book Insights: #1 Playing politics is like having sex. It’s something almost everyone does, but no one is comfortable discussing what they do. We typically use the term playing politics to describe our colleagues’ behavior, never our own. #2 Every office is a playing field for the game of politics. And when you take a job, you’re automatically a player. To succeed, you not only have to do outstanding work, but you also have to deal with quirky bosses and annoying co-workers. #3 To succeed in politics, you must be able to influence others. To do that, you must first clearly define your goals. Some have a natural aptitude for politics, and they are able to navigate the office politics process with ease. #4 When thinking about your goals, consider these questions: Do you want to stay with your current organization or find a different place to work. Do you want to remain in the same field or consider a different occupation. Would you like a more comfortable relationship with your boss.
