Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller: The police investigate the death of a veterinarian in Venice, Italy in this “swiftly paced” mystery (The Seattle Times). When the body of man is found in a canal, damaged by the tides, carrying no wallet, and wearing only one shoe, Guido Brunetti has little to work with. No local has filed a missing-person report, and no hotel guests have disappeared. The autopsy shows he had suffered from a rare, disfiguring disease. A shopkeeper tells Brunetti that the man had a kindly way with animals. Finally, the victim is identified as a much-loved veterinarian—and Brunetti’s quest to find the killer will take him on a harrowing journey . . . “All her trademark strengths shine in this swiftly paced, sophisticated tale of greed versus ethics.” —The Seattle Times “Written with such delicacy and emotional force that we can’t help but be reminded of Greek tragedy.” —Booklist, starred review

Download or read book Elizabithia written by Denis Durham and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2022-04-06 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabithia: The War Against Musical Tyranny and the Search for Lost Music Trees By: Denis Durham Elizabithia is a musical kingdom where seven varieties of trees known as Harmonic Timbers grow. Each of the seven types of trees emits their own unique frequencies making seven notes on which all of their music is based. With the discovery of an ancient scroll, Evanis, a renowned archeaologist, learns that there may be other Harmonic Timbers that produce other frequencies not known to the citizens of Elizabithia. Evanis enlists the help of his sister Ellithia, and his good friend Dionysius, and together they are known as the Trio. Following the information learned from the ancient scroll, the Trio search for the lost music trees in a land known as Cymatigonia. The knowledge gained will shake up the music world, but the fight against musical tyranny will not be easy. It puts them on a collision course with the Elizabithian authorities who resist them at every turn. With courage to pursue the truth, the Trio must contend with long held musical prejudices. They seek to show that there is far more to music than what anyone had realized. The Trio knows the truth, but convincing the citizens of Elizabithia and the authorities will not be easy. They embark on a journey that will change the history of music forever.

Book Synopsis Murder in Renaissance Italy by : Trevor Dean
Download or read book Murder in Renaissance Italy written by Trevor Dean and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable collection explores the many faces of murder, and its cultural presences, across the Italian peninsula between 1350 and 1650. These shape the content in different ways: the faces of homicide range from the ordinary to the sensational, from the professional to the accidental, from the domestic to the public; while the cultural presence of homicide is revealed through new studies of sculpture, paintings, and popular literature. Dealing with a range of murders, and informed by the latest criminological research on homicide, it brings together new research by an international team of specialists on a broad range of themes: different kinds of killers (by gender, occupation, and situation); different kinds of victim (by ethnicity, gender, and status); and different kinds of evidence (legal, judicial, literary, and pictorial). It will be an indispensable resource for students of Renaissance Italy, late medieval/early modern crime and violence, and homicide studies.
Book Synopsis Violence and Harm in the Animal Industrial Complex by : Gwen Hunnicutt
Download or read book Violence and Harm in the Animal Industrial Complex written by Gwen Hunnicutt and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-12 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book grapples with multispecies violent exploitations embedded in corridors of power within the animal-industrial complex (A-IC). The A-IC is a useful framework for understanding how exploitative human-animal relations are central to capitalist relations and profit accumulation. ‘A-IC-related-violence’ – killing animals for economic gain – has a ripple effect which results in profound consequences for humans as well. This collection of international scholarship explores topics as varied as how A-IC-related-violence is reproduced and sustained through rapidly changing discursive strategies, ideological architecture, and particular cultural forms that elide and legitimize animal cruelty. Several chapters expose collusion between governments, corporations, and academia as central to maintaining dominance of A-IC-related-violence. Other scholars explore the trouble with making the conditions of “meat” production visible – of de-fetishizing meat commodities. The scholarship critically explores dynamic components of an apparatus that enables A-IC-related-violence and harm but is situated within the capitalist order and charts A-IC-related-violence as the key profit-generating practice in select domains of the A-IC. The book unmasks inherent cruelties in a proliferation of social forms that ultimately reflect a socioeconomic system that centralizes capitalist life characterized by endless growth, competitiveness, and profligate consumption. This is essential reading for those engaged in critical criminology, green criminology, violence studies, peace and conflict studies, critical animal studies, or animal rights-oriented scholars.
