This new edition by Douglas R. Thomas presents the first comprehensive study of the transmission of the text, a critical edition of the Latin text, and a textual commentary. The first part of the book presents the study of the manuscript tradition, employng the stemmatic method to establish the relationships between all 107 extant manuscripts of Brutus, and demonstrating that the stemma has three independent branches in the first part of the text and four in the second. The study also shows that the ninth-century Cremona fragment is part of the long-lost archetype, the Codex Laudensis, and that F, the manuscript copied by Niccolò Niccoli, is the source of the majority of the tradition. Brief descriptions are provided of the manuscripts in a catalogue. The second part of the volume presents a new edition of Brutus with critical apparatus, based on the study of the text's transmission. Each textual problem is considered afresh and careful attention is paid to historical evidence and Ciceronian style. The edition is followed by a detailed textual commentary, which discusses a range of significant textual problems.

It highlights the parallel development of the rhetorical tradition that became understood, on the one hand, as a domain of style and persuasive speech, associated with the figure of Lysias, and, on the other, as a kind of philosophical enterprise which makes significant demands on moral and political education in antiquity, epitomized in the work of Isocrates. There are two pivotal moments in which the two rhetoricians were pitted against each other as representatives of different modes of cultural discourse: Athens in the fourth century BCE, as memorably portrayed in Plato's Phaedrus, and Rome in the first century BCE when Dionysius of Halicarnassus proposes to create from the united Lysianic and Isocratean rhetoric the foundation for the ancient rhetorical tradition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pride is pervasive in Roman texts, as an emotion and a political and social concept implicated in ideas of power. This study examines Roman discourse of pride from two distinct complementary perspectives. The first is based on scripts, mini-stories told to illustrate what pride is, how it arises and develops, and where it fits within the Roman emotional landscape. The second is semantic, and draws attention to differences between terms within the pride field. The peculiar feature of Roman pride that emerges is that it appears exclusively as a negative emotion, attributed externally and condemned, up to the Augustan period. This previously unnoticed lack of expression of positive pride in republican discourse is a result of the way the Roman republican elite articulates its values as anti-monarchical and is committed, within the governing class, to power-sharing and a kind of equality. The book explores this uniquely Roman articulation of pride attributed to people, places, and institutions and traces the partial rehabilitation of pride that begins in the texts of the Augustan poets at the time of great political change. Reading for pride produces innovative readings of texts that range from Plautus to Ausonius, with major focus on Cicero, Livy, Vergil, and other Augustan poets.

In view of the current debate on the application of Greek and Roman rhetoric to biblical texts, C. Joachim Classen aims at determining both the opportunities and the limits of such forms of criticism, stressing the importance of supplementing the ancient categories with modern categories. He emphasizes the difference between letters such as Paul’s epistles and other kinds of texts, for example the gospels, and the need to select the aspects and criteria of rhetorical criticism accordingly and tries to illustrate how such criticism may be practiced. In addition, he answers the question to what extent Paul was familiar with Greek rhetoric by an examination of his vocabulary. Classen analyzes at length Melanchthon’s early lectures, his handbooks, and his commentaries to show some of the roots of this type of criticism, the manner in which its greatest exponent developed it, and the qualities ideally required for its successful application.
