Book Synopsis It Still Moves by : Amanda Petrusich
Download or read book It Still Moves written by Amanda Petrusich and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2008-08-19 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Where lies the boundary between meaning and sentiment? Between memory and nostalgia? America and Americana? What is and what was? Does it move?" —Donovon Hohn, A Romance of Rust Part travelogue, part cultural criticism, part music appreciation, It Still Moves does for today's avant folk scene what Greil Marcus did for Dylan and The Basement Tapes. Amanda Petrusich outlines the sounds of the new, weird America—honoring the rich tradition of gospel, bluegrass, country, folk, and rock that feeds it, while simultaneously exploring the American character as personified in all of these genres historically. Through interviews, road stories, geographical and sociological interpretations, and detailed music criticism, Petrusich traces the rise of Americana music from its gospel origins through its new and compelling incarnations (as evidenced in bands and artists from Elvis to Iron and Wine, the Carter Family to Animal Collective, Johnny Cash to Will Oldham) and explores how the genre is adapting to the twenty-first century. Ultimately the book is an examination of all things American: guitars, cars, kids, motion, passion, enterprise, and change, in a fervent attempt to reconcile the American past with the American present, using only dusty records and highway maps as guides.

Book Synopsis The Downhome Sound by : Mandi Bates Bailey
Download or read book The Downhome Sound written by Mandi Bates Bailey and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2023-03-08 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American roots music, also known as Americana music, can be challenging to categorize, spanning the genres of jazz, bluegrass, country, blues, rock and roll, and an assortment of variations in between. In The Downhome Sound, Mandi Bates Bailey explores the messages, artists, community, and appeal of this seemingly disparate musical collective. To understand the art form’s intended meanings and typical audiences, she analyzes lyrics and interviews Americana artists, journalists, and festival organizers to uncover a desire for inclusion and diversity. Bailey also conducts an experiment to assess listener reception relative to more commercial forms of music. The result is an in-depth study of the political and cultural influence of Americana and its implications for social justice.

Book Synopsis Catalog of the German-Americana Collection, University of Cincinnati by : Don Heinrich Tolzmann
Download or read book Catalog of the German-Americana Collection, University of Cincinnati written by Don Heinrich Tolzmann and published by De Gruyter Saur. This book was released on 1990 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Adolescent Criminal examines the most important issues, components, and trends concerning adolescent misconduct from the vantage point of the end of the 1980s, and concerns itself with what to look for in the future.Despite indications that juvenile delinquency is decreasing, a closer look at the picture gives much cause for concern. Adolescent crime has become increasingly more sophisticated, violent and heterogeneous, and its participants younger. Gang violence has spread out from urban centers into suburbia, and gang members have become more organized in their activities. Juvenile prostitution has shown little sign of abating despite the presence of AIDS. Drug and alcohol use among adolescents has reached epidemic proportions, as have running away from home and pettier acts of delinquency. This study of juvenile delinquency is primarily concerned with the adolescent years of youth where delinquency behavior is most pronounced, taking a multicontextual, multidisciplinary approach to exploring the adolescent criminal. The advantage in this is that it takes into consideration the contributions, strengths and weaknesses of the various schools of thought with respect to the delinquency of adolescents--sociological, psychological, biological, familial, demographical, legal, and international, and their implications for the future--in order to present the student with a greater overall perspective and knowledge of the dynamics of adolescent crime today.
Book Synopsis Schubert's Late Music by : Lorraine Byrne Bodley
Download or read book Schubert's Late Music written by Lorraine Byrne Bodley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-07 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schubert's late music has proved pivotal for the development of diverse fields of musical scholarship, from biography and music history to the theory of harmony. This collection addresses current issues in Schubert studies including compositional technique, the topical issue of 'late' style, tonal strategy and form in the composer's instrumental music, and musical readings of the 'postmodern' Schubert. Offering fresh approaches to Schubert's instrumental and vocal works and their reception, this book argues that the music that the composer produced from 1822–8 is central to a paradigm shift in the history of music during the nineteenth century. The contributors provide a timely reassessment of Schubert's legacy, assembling a portrait of the composer that is very different from the sentimental Schubert permeating nineteenth-century culture and the postmodern Schubert of more recent literature.
