Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lyric Leaves From a Khaki Notebook It would be folly, indeed, to submit this little volume as an addition to the literature of poesy. There may be, however, an interest in the verses as sidelights on army experiences, from the stand point of a man in the ranks. If, at times, the feet are clumsy and the meter awkward, pray recall that one may not easily woo the Muse amid the distractions of a barrack, the wearisome journey of a troop train, the discomforts of a rain - soaked tent, the annoyances of a barn-loft billet, or the revelry of a roadside cafe. And under such con ditions, these verses were written. The first ten poems - if that term be not too dignified - were written in the States. The others were written in France, most of them among the Vosges moun tains, not far from the boundary beyond which so. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's musical theatre world rocks. Now that rock 'n' roll music and its offshoots, including pop, hard rock, rap, r&b, funk, folk, and world-pop music, are the standard language of musical theatre, theatre singers need a source of information on these styles, their origins, and their performance practices. Rock in the Musical Theatre: A Guide for Singers fills this need. Today's musical theatre training programs are now including rock music in their coursework and rock songs and musicals in their repertoires. This is a text for those trainees, courses, and productions. It will also be of great value to working professionals, teachers, music directors, and coaches less familiar with rock styles, or who want to improve their rock-related skills. The author, an experienced music director, vocal coach, and university professor, and an acknowledged expert on rock music in the theatre, examines the many aspects of performing rock music in the theatre and offers practical advice through a combination of aesthetic and theoretical study, extensive discussions of musical, vocal, and acting techniques, and chronicles of coaching sessions. The book also includes advice from working actors, casting directors, and music directors who specialize in rock music for the stage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of poetry by women in late imperial China examines the metamorphosis of the trope of the "inner chambers" (gui), to which women were confined in traditional Chinese households, and which in literature were both a real and an imaginary place. Originally popularized in sixth-century "palace style" poetry, the inner chambers were used by male writers as a setting in which to celebrate female beauty, to lament the loneliness of abandoned women, and by extension, to serve as a political allegory for the exile of loyal and upright male ministers spurned by the imperial court. Female writers of lyric poetry (ci) soon adopted the theme, beginning its transition from male fantasy to multidimensional representation of women and their place in society, and eventually its manifestation in other poetic genres as well. Emerging from the role of sexual objects within poetry, late imperial women were agents of literary change in their expansion and complication of the boudoir theme. While some take ownership and de-eroticizing its imagery for their own purposes, adding voices of children and older women, and filling the inner chambers with purposeful activity such as conversation, teaching, religious ritual, music, sewing, childcare, and chess-playing, some simply want to escape from their confinement and protest gender restrictions imposed on women. Women's Poetry of Late Imperial China traces this evolution across centuries, providing and analyzing examples of poetic themes, motifs, and imagery associated with the inner chambers, and demonstrating the complication and nuancing of the gui theme by increasingly aware and sophisticated women writers.

Book excerpt: “A novelistic mosaic that simultaneously reads like a thriller and like a strange, dreamlike excursion into the subconscious.” —The New York Times Years ago, when House of Leaves was first being passed around, it was nothing more than a badly bundled heap of paper, parts of which would occasionally surface on the Internet. No one could have anticipated the small but devoted following this terrifying story would soon command. Starting with an odd assortment of marginalized youth -- musicians, tattoo artists, programmers, strippers, environmentalists, and adrenaline junkies -- the book eventually made its way into the hands of older generations, who not only found themselves in those strangely arranged pages but also discovered a way back into the lives of their estranged children. Now this astonishing novel is made available in book form, complete with the original colored words, vertical footnotes, and second and third appendices. The story remains unchanged, focusing on a young family that moves into a small home on Ash Tree Lane where they discover something is terribly wrong: their house is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. Of course, neither Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Will Navidson nor his companion Karen Green was prepared to face the consequences of that impossibility, until the day their two little children wandered off and their voices eerily began to return another story -- of creature darkness, of an ever-growing abyss behind a closet door, and of that unholy growl which soon enough would tear through their walls and consume all their dreams.

The London Magazine is briefly told in the accomplisments and failures of its four editors, and during the fourteen months of his editorship, 1820-21, John Scott succeeded in establishing the London as one of the finest literary periodicals of the nineteenth century. John Taylor, the second editor, maintained the high quality of the magazine by securing many excellent writers. But by the end of 1825, the first year of Henry Southern's editorship, the magazine had lost most of its distinguished writers. When Charles night began editing the London in 1828, its great period was already a memory. This book presents a brief history of the magazine alongside the index.

Book excerpt: In a book “as bewitching and entertaining as a novel” a renowned Italian literary critic “uncovers the unexpected, extraordinary modernity of the classics” (Piero Dorfles). In A New Sublime, literary critic Piero Boitani reveals the timeless beauty and wisdom of ancient literature, highlighting its profound and surprising connections to the present. Ranging from Homer to Tacitus, with Thucydides, Aristotle, Sophocles, Cicero, and many others in between, Boitani’s fresh and inspiring insights remind us of the enduring importance and beauty of the classics of the Western canon. Boitani explores what the classics have to say about the mutability and fluidity of identity and matter, the power and position of women in society. He also looks closely at their depictions of force and subjugation, fate and free will, the ethical life, hospitality, love, compassion, and mysticism. Through it all, he shows how the classics can play active roles in our contemporary lives.

Book excerpt: "Discussing two cinematic interpretations of Terence Rattigan's play The Browning Version, Eisenhauer traces the use/abuse of names in the rhetoric of academic and political vilification. Drawing on such diverse sources as Aeschylus, Browning, Golding, and Adorno, he finds the current state of discourse in need of "heavy teaching," so that the repressed subject of democracy/tyranny can surpass the psychopathology of the Same." "Analyzing Fellini's radical revision of an Edgar Allan Poe short story, the author suggests how inscrutability saves the audience from guilt because the viewer cannot arrive at apodictic certainty concerning the "subject screened." While Poe lampoons "the transcendentals" as a kind of disease, implying readerly guilt by association, and solidifying the letter T, Fellini, by valorizing theatrical illusion, fails to translate a text that teaches the reader more than he or she is prepared to know."
