Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andinmy haste, I said: “Allmenare Liars” 1 —Psalms 116:11 The Original Lie Philosophical analysis often reveals and seldom solves paradoxes. To quote Stephen Read: A paradox arises when an unacceptable conclusion is supported by a plausible argument from apparently acceptable premises. [...] So three di?erent reactions to the paradoxes are possible: to show that the r- soning is fallacious; or that the premises are not true after all; or that 2 the conclusion can in fact be accepted. There are sometimes elaborate ways to endorse a paradoxical conc- sion. One might be prepared to concede that indeed there are a number of grains that make a heap, but no possibility to know this number. However, some paradoxes are more threatening than others; showing the conclusiontobeacceptableisnotaseriousoption, iftheacceptanceleads to triviality. Among semantic paradoxes, the Liar (in any of its versions) 3 o?ers as its conclusion a bullet no one would be willing to bite. One of the most famous versions of the Liar Paradox was proposed by Epimenides, though its attribution to the Cretan poet and philosopher has only a relatively recent history. It seems indeed that Epimenides was mentioned neither in ancient nor in medieval treatments of the Liar 1 Jewish Publication Society translation. 2 Read [1].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The projects tackled by the software development industry have grown in scale and complexity. Costs are increasing along with the number of developers. Power bills for distributed projects have reached the point where optimisations pay literal dividends. Over the last 10 years, a software development movement has gained traction, a movement founded in games development. The limited resources and complexity of the software and hardware needed to ship modern game titles demanded a different approach. Data-oriented design is inspired by high-performance computing techniques, database design, and functional programming values. It provides a practical methodology that reduces complexity while improving performance of both your development team and your product. Understand the goal, understand the data, understand the hardware, develop the solution. This book presents foundations and principles helping to build a deeper understanding of data-oriented design. It provides instruction on the thought processes involved when considering data as the primary detail of any project.

We will seek out and, in many cases, change our behavior and/or our appearance to belong to a group or organization. This need to belong is God-given, and ultimately, we are designed by God to belong to His body, which is the body of Christ. This short book will hopefully help bring some light to this need and the lies that try to tell us otherwise.

Book excerpt: In this well documented 273-page book with over 400 references, the author argues that the Catalan independence movement has been attacked by the Spanish authorities using, among other strategies, disinformation, manipulation and accusations of indoctrination. It exposes the insistent attempts by the Spanish authorities to engage in large-scale disinformation as one of its strategies, along with endless threats and lawfare, to try to discredit, decapitate and counter what is, in fact, an entirely peaceful, democratic movement. After a Preface by Professor Henry Ettinghausen, the book consists of a short Introduction followed by seven chapters and a short list of conclusions. The chapters are "Fake news is not new. It goes well back in history", "Fake News and Russian influence, a concern in Europe and beyond", "The Catalan independence process and Spain's foreign policy", "The Catalan independence process: a "breeding-ground" for falsehoods, manipulation, fake news... and unrelenting lawfare", "Claims of Russian involvement in the Catalan independence process", "The Covid-19 pandemic, democratic values, and disinformation", and "The Covid-19 pandemic: a new excuse to hammer the Catalan independence process".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Unity of Consciousness Tim Bayne draws on philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience in defence of the claim that consciousness is unified. In the first part of the book Bayne develops an account of what it means to say that consciousness is unified. Part II applies this account to a variety of cases - drawn from both normal and pathological forms of experience - in which the unity of consciousness is said to break down. Bayne argues that the unity of consciousness remains intact in each of these cases. Part III explores the implications of the unity of consciousness for theories of consciousness, for the sense of embodiment, and for accounts of the self. In one of the most comprehensive examinations of the topic available, The Unity of Consciousness draws on a wide range of findings within philosophy and the sciences of the mind to construct an account of the unity of consciousness that is both conceptually sophisticated and scientifically informed.

Book excerpt: J.N. Findlay, distinguished scholar and acknowledged expert on Plato, argues persuasively for a new interpretation of the Platonic writings. He believes that Plato's Unwritten Doctrines were present in the background of all the great philosopher's mature written work. With the use of Aristotelian and other writings on these reported doctrines he demonstrates that they admit of an intelligible elucidation and they direct indispensable light upon the full meaning of the written Dialogues. The author emphasizes the valuable use of Platonic notions and methods by the Neoplatonists and the Schoolmen as well as by such modern thinkers as Husserl and Russell. He also censures, as a great misinterpretation, the widespread Aristotelian view of Platonism as a two-world theory, and argues that, for Plato, the Ideas and their Principles alone have full reality, everything else being logically parasitic upon them. The work also includes two important Appendices, the first providing translations of the Aristotelian and other ancient material regarding Plato's oral teaching, the second criticizing and refuting the views of Harold F. Cherniss on the same material.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book suggests that religion, in its usual sense, can be replaced by something better, that the human spirit or subjectivity can be the subject of scientific study and that lack of purpose or design in the universe is not a handicap but a positive opportunity for intelligent beings to make of the universe and its contents what they reasonably can. The book breaks new ground in suggesting a radical alternative to religion. It offers a scientific and humanist alternative to religion which appeals to people’s critical faculties rather than emotions or intuitions. It also challenges current views of causation and the principle of sufficient reason by stressing the subjectivity of our reasoning powers and clarifying these in relation to an independent external reality. It develops and elaborates a notion of the ’noosphere’ within a theoretical system, this enables the notion to assume a scientific importance which it currently lacks because it is treated as an isolated, eccentric and rather mystical idea.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever listened to a preacher bring a sermon on the pre-tribulation rapture? How wonderful it will be when we are all caught up with Jesus just before everything breaks loose here on earth? What about the one that is preached on how and why the Sabbath was changed to Sunday and give a list of reasons; none of them found in the Bible. Then there is tithing? They make sure to let us know we demonstrate our obedience through paying our tithing and giving back to God/Yahweh, and when we do not, we can be cursed or not be blessed as we should. We cannot forget the sermon on the Gifts of God/Yahweh that are no longer for the church. These and other doctrinal views are commonly preached in the main stream Christian Churches today. They are based off opinion of men and are often argued with verses from the Bible that have been taken out of context. It is interesting that the evangelical churches today claim to take and read the Bible literally. They claim every word to be the inerrant word of God/Yahweh. Many of them treat the Bible as God/Yahweh, yet there is not a verse that can be found that says the Sabbath was changed to a Sunday, that the Saints will be raptured before the tribulation, or the church is to pay tithing. Nowhere will you find the Holy Spirit only gives just some of the gifts on the list to believers today. You will not find a verse that specifically tells you once you are saved you are always saved. Instead, you will find volumes of verses that contradict each of these false doctrines being preached. So, what does that say about our contemporary church today, the one that claims to take each word, statement, or verse literally, the very ones preaching about false teachers, teaching themselves, false doctrine?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the unnecessary actions of Abraham Lincoln in causing and pursuing the greatest American crime of the nineteenth century, the American Civil war and secondly its cover-up by his cabinet and all the sycophantic historians following. My extensive reading on the Civil War and visiting the Gettysburg battlefield left me aghast as to the number of soldiers, the cream of. American manhood, were sacrificed and wasted upon the numerous battlefields 600,000 plus, more dead than all American wars combined. Yet historians pass this off as justifiable homicide, and a small price to pay to achieve freedom for four million slaves. To me this is sheer blasphemy! According to 'the philosophical principles espoused by Jean Jacques Rousseau, John Locke, Thomas Hobbes etc., the Thirteen Colonies claimed their natural right to declare their independence fro. the Mother Country, Britain. and establish their own right to self-determination. The Declaration of Independence, beginning "When in the Course of human Events, it becomes necessary for one People t() dissolve the Political Bands which have connected the. with another" etc., says it all. (Interestingly Texas used almost identical language in their declaration to be free from Mexico.) But men the South had the audacity to declare these same fundamental rights an enraged Lincoln denied it to them thereby plunging the nation in the worst case of fratricide the world has ever known through his scorched-earth policy. Using the clever battle-cry. "The Nation must be preserved" he convinced the Nation as to the urgency of crushing the South.
