Book excerpt: The author vowed to provide affordable modes of enjoyment to his wife who is fighting the diseases of strokes, Alzheimer's, and diabetes. Her struggle with the diseases started in 2003. Her preferred mode of enjoyment is traveling and visiting places farther away from home. The author decided that cruising is best for her because it is safe and less strenuous compared to other vacation packages. She has had a number of cruises since the first stroke in 2003. The Allure of the Seas did not disappoint the author and his wife. In fact, cruising on the largest cruise ship in the world, provided a new experience that stands out among many previous cruises. The vastness of everything on the ship: - size of the ship, number of passengers, number of crews, number of fun activities, number of venues where fun activities are held so on so forth - all these make cruising the more exciting. This book is about listing all the fun activities from day 1 to day 7, happening on the Allure of the Seas during a 7-day vacation voyage to the Western Caribbean. The list includes times, show names, venues, and decks, when and where the activities happened. The list also includes shore excursions. The Ebola emergence came in just the opportune time when this book was being readied for publication. Since Ebola is a malignant threat to the health and well being of everybody specially in crowds as in cruises, it is placed prominently ahead of other topics in the book. Not to lose sight, the book is still about the author's follow through in his mission to provide happiness to his wife while she is still able to move and appreciate the visible aspects of her surroundings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A human and global take on a beloved vacation spot. The crash of surf, smell of salted air, wet whorls of sand underfoot. These are the sensations of the beach, that environment that has drawn humans to its life-sustaining shores for millennia. And while the gull’s cry and the cove’s splendor have remained constant throughout time, our relationship with the beach has been as fluid as the runnels left behind by the tide’s turning. The Lure of the Beach is a chronicle of humanity's history with the coast, taking us from the seaside pleasure palaces of Roman elites and the aquatic rituals of medieval pilgrims, to the venues of modern resort towns and beyond. Robert C. Ritchie traces the contours of the material and social economies of the beach throughout time, covering changes in the social status of beach goers, the technology of transport, and the development of fashion (from nudity to Victorianism and back again), as well as the geographic spread of modern beach-going from England to France, across the Mediterranean, and from nineteenth-century America to the world. And as climate change and rising sea levels erode the familiar faces of our coasts, we are poised for a contemporary reckoning with our relationship—and responsibilities—to our beaches and their ecosystems. The Lure of the Beach demonstrates that whether as a commodified pastoral destination, a site of ecological resplendency, or a flashpoint between private ownership and public access, the history of the beach is a human one that deserves to be told now more than ever before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although relatively little known, fungi provide the links between the terrestrial organisms and ecosystems that underpin our functioning planet. The Allure of Fungi presents fungi through multiple perspectives – those of mycologists and ecologists, foragers and forayers, naturalists and farmers, aesthetes and artists, philosophers and Traditional Owners. It explores how a history of entrenched fears and misconceptions about fungi has led to their near absence in Australian ecological consciousness and biodiversity conservation. Through a combination of text and visual essays, the author reflects on how aesthetic, sensate experience deepened by scientific knowledge offers the best chance for understanding fungi, the forest and human interactions with them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Already renowned for his science fiction and scientific nonfiction, Arthur C. Clarke became the world’s most famous science fiction writer after the success of 2001: A Space Odyssey. He then produced novels like Rendezvous with Rama and The Fountains of Paradise that many regard as his finest works. Gary Westfahl closely examines Clarke's remarkable career, ranging from his forgotten juvenilia to the passages he completed for a final novel, The Last Theorem. As Westfahl explains, Clarke’s science fiction offered original perspectives on subjects like new inventions, space travel, humanity’s destiny, alien encounters, the undersea world, and religion. While not inclined to mysticism, Clarke necessarily employed mystical language to describe the fantastic achievements of advanced aliens and future humans. Westfahl also contradicts the common perception that Clarke’s characters were bland and underdeveloped, arguing that these reticent, solitary individuals, who avoid conventional relationships, represent his most significant prediction of the future, as they embody the increasingly common lifestyle of people in the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: Challenging traditional notions about why successful high school graduates struggle in college, this book sheds light on the obstacles that hinder a seamless transition and provides clear guidance on how to overcome them. Drawing from research and real-life stories of educators and students across a variety of institutions, Geddes illuminates a critical truth: it’s the successes students had in high school that work against them in college, not their failures. This book explores the hidden structural, functional, and cognitive traps that undermine students’ academic work, strain teacher-student relationships, and impose artificial limits on their potential. Armed with formulas for academic success, it provides tools for guiding students towards levels of high performance and supplies teaching methods for how to create an educational environment conducive to success. Packed with practical advice, actionable steps, and inspiring success stories, this landmark book serves as an invaluable roadmap for college educators seeking to empower their students and revolutionize their institutions.
