Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At first glance it appears that little has happened in our understanding of bronchogenic carcinoma, since five year survival rates have not changed appreciably over the past ten years. This is partially true, however the depth of our understanding has increased and will continue to do so at a rapid pace over the next five to ten years. Information on the basic tumor biology, identification of important groups at high risk and im proved delivery of cytotoxic agents in the treatment of lung cancer, will all add to improve the outcome. The purpose of this text is to provide useful background information and to serve as a reference for approaching the patient with lung cancer. Therefore it will serve as a review for some and as a beginning for others. An important starting point in any discussion of lung cancer is an epidemiological survey of the topic (Chapter I). For those who do not avoid the hazards and present with symptoms, what is the most logical approach in determining the diagnosis (Chapter II). This chapter is intended to provide a general overview of the subjects covered in detail in the remainder of the text.

The Molecular Genetics of Lung Cancer describes how the new techniques, methods and approaches of molecular genetics are being used to unravel the complexities of the mechanisms underlying lung tumorigenesis by analysis at the DNA, RNA and protein levels with potentially important implications for tumour classification, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment as well as providing new insights into how lung tumours arise and how they progress to malignancy.

Book excerpt: Lung cancer is the most common form of cancer in the world and a major cause of death. This new book brings together stellar research from around the world. The two main types of primary lung cancer, small cell and non-small cell are examined. The book's scope encompasses the three main types of non-small cell lung cancer: squamous cell carcinoma which is the commonest type of lung cancer and develops in the cells which line the airways; adenocarcinoma develops from the cells which produce mucus in the lining of the airways; and large cell carcinoma gets its name from the large, rounded cells that are seen when they are examined under the microscope. About 1 in 5 lung cancers are small cell, the rest non-small cell. Causes of lung cancer are primarily smoking, but include as well exposure to radon, asbestos, uranium, arsenic, and certain petroleum products. Research and new drugs are appearing with increasing frequency in this field.
