Book excerpt: Lucy Left Town is the emotional story of a woman, who after many years of marriage, decided to take care of herself first; the story of a woman who began to look for something more in her life. In Lucy's teenage years, heartsore with grief due to an unexpected death, she made a hurried and distraught decision; a decision that seemed to be the only option at the time. That decision led to many years of marriage, and as the years began to add up, she found herself struggling with the feeling that life was passing by at an alarming rate. She began to wonder if the years spent with her husband were reason enough to justify spending her remaining time in a vacuum. Her husband, Chip, was not a cruel or difficult man; just a man who was content with very little change in his life; satisfied with remaining in the groove he had notched out for himself. Finally, Lucy concluded that the only course of action that she could take would be to leave her home - she did not make this decision lightly, but thought about it from many angles, and in order to have that something more, she would have to take that big step. Settled into a new life, Lucy was content. Meanwhile, Chip could not reconcile himself to the fact that she had left and was determined that she should return and they could restart their lives together. In the end, Fate decided the outcome of any reconciliation between the two of them, and another unexpected death sent Lucy back to her home for one last visit.

Book excerpt: The traumatized central character of J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace is provocatively reimagined in this “surprising, subtle, and deeply challenging” novel (Kirkus Reviews, starred review). Two years ago, Lucy Lurie was the victim of an act of sexual violence that devastated her life. Afterwards, she becomes obsessed with the author John Coetzee, whose acclaimed novel turned her brutal assault into a literary metaphor. Withdrawn and fearful of crowds, Lucy nonetheless makes occasional forays into the world of men in her search for Coetzee himself. She means to confront him. The Lucy in his novel, Disgrace, is passive and almost entirely lacking agency. Lucy means to right the record, for she is the lacuna that Coetzee left in his novel—the missing piece of the puzzle. Lucy plans to put herself back in the story, to assert her agency and identity. For Lucy Lurie will be no man’s lacuna. Lacuna is both a powerful feminist reply to the book considered to be Coetzee’s masterwork, and the moving story of one woman’s attempt to reclaim her identity after trauma. James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) was a prolific and popular American writer of the early 19th century. His historical romances of frontier and Indian life in the early American days created a unique form of American literature. Before embarking on his career as a writer, Cooper served in the U.S. Navy as a Midshipman, which greatly influenced many of his novels and other writings. The novel that launched his career was The Spy, a tale about counterespionage set during the Revolutionary War. He also wrote numerous sea stories, and his best-known works are five historical novels of the frontier period known as the Leatherstocking Tales. Among his most famous works is the Romantic novel The Last of the Mohicans, often regarded as his masterpiece.
