So when Wormy unexpectedly proposes to her, she kindly turns him down; she has far too much to do to be marrying anyone. And besides, she simply isn’t in love with him. But a certain meddling fairy named Lucinda has been listening in, and she doesn’t approve of Evie’s rejection. Suddenly, Evie finds herself transformed from a girl into a hideous, hungry ogre! Stuck in this new and confusing form, Evie now has only sixty-two days to accept another proposal—or else be stuck as an ogre forever.

In Dickens and Travel, Lucinda Hawksley looks at the journeys made by the author – who is also her great great great grandfather. Although Dickens is usually perceived as a London author, in the 1840s he whisked his family away to live in Italy for year, and spent several months in Switzerland. Some years later he took up residence in Paris and Boulogne (where he lived in secret with his lover). In addition to travelling widely in Europe, he also toured America twice, performed onstage in Canada and, before his untimely death, was planning a tour of Australia. Dickens and Travel enters into the world of the Victorian traveller and looks at how Charles Dickens’s journeys influenced his writing and enriched his life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I began this book not as a planned publication but as an in-depth chronicle of my recollections. It is a very raw and largely unedited and every word I personally wrote. Most of my life's experiences contained in the book cover the years from 1942 to 2001. I did not write it for profit or any notion of self-aggrandizement, but something to pass on to my propensity. In fact, my preference is that sales remain low. It does contain several items of historical note probably not covered in other publications. My reasoning was to convert a very lengthy memo into published form because of a similar effort by my Great Grandfather Marshall George Newman (Son of an Indian Chief) that failed. He composed a very lengthy document about his experiences from 1840s forward. That document passed through many hands and eventually disappeared. I did not want to repeat his experience so I elected to complete it in a book that would probably last for many years. Are there inaccuracies in this book, probably, but very few as I made every effort to be honest, direct, and straightforward in all aspects in developing the final product. Perhaps the biggest issue many would have is how honest I related both the good and bad of my life without the obfuscation we see, read, and hear in everyday life. I know of no other path to take than to be honest and not join in the trampling of the word integrity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you believe a personal destiny exists for each of us? If it were possible to catch a glimpse of that destiny, would you have the courage, faith and strength of heart to follow it? What would be the cost, and what would have to be lain on the altar of sacrifice? FULL CIRCLE on the MOUNTAIN answers those questions with a powerful and insightful journey into one womans personal destiny. Claudette Elizabeth McAllister grew up a young woman, in rural South Carolina in the fifties, the daughter of a farmer and his bakery shop attendant wife. She was an ordinary girl, with ordinary dreams of going to college and pursuing a career in accounting. Destiny, however, used those dreams to choose another path for her. A presumed "chance meeting" with handsome, educated, and wealthy, Johnny Richardson would change her life and set her on a course with destiny which would not rest until she came full circle with it some twenty years later. In the early sixties, fate, in disguise as a life-threatening experience drives her back to her hometown. There she must face the reality of a son born out of wedlock, the tragic accident that killed her best friend and the realization that her life was somehow being orchestrated by forces beyond her control. Forces that continually required her to sacrifice and endure what seemed impossible for the human spirit. FULL CIRCLE on the MOUNTAIN is a journey along her path of people, places and events which would not only direct and shape her destiny, but weave its threads deeply into an entire family, unaware they too were a part of the great tapestry of this simple woman. " A rare and powerful combination of: entertainment, insight, wisdom and truth." Henri Forget, free-lance editor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fifth Octave is a bit of science-fiction intrigue concerning little green worms from a different galaxy who want to take over the planet Earth because they like it here so much more than their home planet. These fat little worms are very intelligent and very inventive, and one of them, known as Lady V., has taught them how to hear in their minds what others are thinking and planning and how to go great distances and appear to be other people by using the fifth-octave vibrations that are too high for humans to hear. Humans hear them just as a kind of whispering. The worm leader, who goes by the name of Slobbo—his real name is too difficult to pronounce—is a kind of “wormsley” Napoleon, who wants and plans to take over much of the earth and make all the earthlings subservient to him. Many skirmishes occur where many earth people are killed, but very few worms. What was treated as a joke at first becomes a very serious threat. Finally, Slobbo is kidnapped and brought to a planet in the constellation of Orion, but he soon reappears on earth with all his fighting worms intact, making ready to take over. Slobbo has an earthling partner, named Marvin, who works with him because of jealousy on account of a botched love affair, and the two of them are put on trial. Slobbo is sentenced to be shot at sight. Lady V. convinces him to give up his heroic plans, which he does for a while, but then his need to be known as a heroic warrior overpowers him. Finally, the threat of disaster to his whole race of little green worms, including himself, persuades him to forget his heroic plans and become just a pleasant, normal worm.

In the disunited states, no person of color—especially not a girl whose body reimagines flight—is safe. A quest for Freedom has brought former Muleseed Jellybean “Ji-ji” Silapu to D.C., aka Dream City, the site of monuments and memorials—where, long ago, the most famous Dreamer of all time marched for the same cause. As Ji-ji struggles to come to terms with her shocking metamorphosis and her friends, Tiro and Afarra, battle formidable ghosts of their own, the former U.S. capital decides whose dreams it wants to invest in and whose dreams it will defer. The journeys the three friends take to liberate themselves and others will not simply defy the status quo, they will challenge the nature of reality itself. Book excerpt: This is a "save-the-planet" book. More and more of us are realizing we are facing humanity's greatest challenge. Over the next two decades, the global warming climate crisis threatens to bring about the end of our Anthropocene Epoch - of us and virtually every multicellular life form. Stephen Erickson introduces you to exquisite creatures, human and non-human. The challenges they face reveal the immensity of the threat facing each of us - and its urgency. Widespread awareness is essential. Most of us don't realize who our Arch-Villain is - the main cause of our predicament. We all need to. And we can't win this fight without a clear understanding of the one solution we have. Key to achieving this solution rapidly and at necessary scale are Five Compassions: for Animals, for Self, for the Land, for Community, and for Democracy. Compassionate activism can create The Great Healing: the healing of our planet and the halting of the ongoing sixth great extinction. More than a "call-to-action" book, more than a book of compelling stories, this is a book with a plan. Four esteemed thought leaders have joined Stephen, contributing 3 new short essays, photos, and a poem: Wendell Berry (essayist, novelist, poet, farmer, national treasure), Joel Fuhrman, M.D. (author of 6 New York Times bestsellers including Eat to Live and The End of Diabetes), Alan Lewis (guides Food and Agriculture Policy for Natural Grocers), and investigative photographer Jo-Anne McArthur, whose images are as heartbreaking as they are beautiful. There is a reason you were born here in human form at this very special time. You matter. You are part of a special generation. You can create the future you want to see. Find your voice, use it. Join us in what will become the most important cause of all of humanity's endeavors to date. You have the power. More than you realize. You'll see."An exceptionally well and persuasively written clarion call to personal and collective action, The Great Healing - Five Compassions That Can Save Our World is unreservedly and urgently recommended." - Midwest Book Review

Book excerpt: Only a stone’s throw from central Sydney, the northern arm of Port Jackson, otherwise known as Middle Harbour, has a mystique all of its own. Unlike most Australian city environs, Middle Harbour was almost entirely neglected during the first two centuries of European settlement. As such, it still contains regions of virtually untouched bushland, and a surprising history to match. Times & Tides by acclaimed historian Gavin Souter is an exploration of this unique – and precious – part of Australia. In prose that is lucid and informed, Souter trawls back and forth in time to create an evocative and multi-layered narrative encompassing Aboriginal life, European arrival, modern suburbs and the natural history of bays, creeks and the bush. Fascinating and insightful, Times & Tides is also a very personal account by someone who has lived within sight of Middle Harbour for almost fifty years. First published in 2004, and rereleased now for the first time digitally, Times & Tides won the North Shore Historical Society’s Isabella Brierley Prize.
