When Miss Lucia Foxe is robbed by a band of shadowy highwaymen, she does not realize this frightening event will change her life forever. Her brave quest to retrieve her stolen locket brings her into close contact with the thieves and their dashing and fearless masked leader, Len Hawkins. But there is more to Len than meets the eye. Beneath the robberÕs mask lies a woman who, in her heart, is not really so very different from Lucia. As their unlikely love grows against the backdrop of the poverty and violent protest of Regency England, Lucia learns how much more there is to the world than her upbringing has taught her. Len flirts with death every day, and eventually, an attempt at exacting revenge on her cruel father threatens to snatch her from LuciaÕs arms. Will Len survive her encounter with death and avoid the retribution of the agents of justice? And can respectable gentlewoman Lucia love Len enough to sacrifice everything she knows?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Civil War, its devastating aftermath, and the decades following, many southern white women turned to writing as a way to make sense of their experiences. Combining varied historical and literary sources, Sarah Gardner argues that women served as guardians of the collective memory of the war and helped define and reshape southern identity. Gardner considers such well-known authors as Caroline Gordon, Ellen Glasgow, and Margaret Mitchell and also recovers works by lesser-known writers such as Mary Ann Cruse, Mary Noailles Murfree, and Varina Davis. In fiction, biographies, private papers, educational texts, historical writings, and through the work of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, southern white women sought to tell and preserve what they considered to be the truth about the war. But this truth varied according to historical circumstance and the course of the conflict. Only in the aftermath of defeat did a more unified vision of the southern cause emerge. Yet Gardner reveals the existence of a strong community of Confederate women who were conscious of their shared effort to define a new and compelling vision of the southern war experience. In demonstrating the influence of this vision, Gardner highlights the role of the written word in defining a new cultural identity for the postbellum South.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roar of the Lion Head Cane is saturated with magic - African magic. From his birth, Izzi, the protagonist becomes a player in the archetypal battle between good and evil as his maternal grandmother seeks his blood, and his paternal grandfather defends his life. The story moves through the boy's youth to his initiation and mastery, helped by the Lion Head Cane. Douglas, the storyteller, is a development professional whose life in Africa brings him into contact with magic, especially Izzi's. Spanning a period of almost three decades, the novel weaves this story of witchcraft within the historical reality of the struggles for independence and post-colonial wars of Mozambique, Liberia, and Angola. It is a story of survival and of understanding the challenges of cultural differences.
