Book excerpt: This SAE Standard covers engine military oils suitable for lubrication of reciprocating internal combustion engines of both spark-ignition and compression-ignition types, and for power transmission fluid applications in combat/tactical service equipment (see 7.1). This document is equivalent to MIL-PRF-2104G when all requirements are met.SAE J2359 was originally issued November 1998 as a means to leverage non-government standard organizations such as SAE to better align military needs with commercial manufacturers and suppliers. Unfortunately, because of the relatively rapid changes in the API heavy-duty diesel engine oil service categories, mainly driven by emission requirements, the commercial and military requirements have become increasingly out of sync. This inconsistency has led to very little interest among industry and support of these documents. Furthermore, because of military uniqueness of the requirements, the administration of these documents is most efficiently handled within the Department of Defense, under current procedures for military performance requirements/specifications.

Lubrication Fundamentals, Third Edition, Revised and Expanded describes the need and design for the many specialized oils and greases used to lubricate machine elements and builds on the tribology and lubrication basics discussed in previous editions. Utilizing knowledge from leading experts in the field, the third edition covers new lubrication requirements, crude oil composition and selection, base stock manufacture, lubricant formulation and evaluation, machinery and lubrication fundamentals, and environmental stewardship. The book combines lubrication theory with practical knowledge, and provides many useful illustrations to highlight key industrial, commercial, marine, aviation, and automotive lubricant applications and concepts. All previous edition chapters have been updated to include new technologies, applications, and specifications that have been introduced in the past 15 years. What’s New in the Third Edition: Adds three new chapters on the growing renewable energy application of wind turbines, the impact of lubricants on energy efficiency, and best practice guidelines on establishing an in-service lubricant analysis program Updates API, SAE, and ACEA engine oil specifications, descriptions of new engine oil tests, impact of engine and fuel technology trends on engine oil Includes the latest environmental lubricant tests, definitions, and labelling programs Compiles expert information from ExxonMobil publications and the foremost international equipment builders and industry associations Covers key influences impacting lubricant formulations and technology Offers data on global energy demand and interesting statistics such as the worldwide population of nuclear reactors, wind turbines, and output of hydraulic turbines Presents new sections on the history of synthetic lubricants and hazardous chemical labeling for lubricants Whether used as a training guide for industry novices, a textbook for students to understand lubrication principles, or a technical reference for experienced lubrication and tribology professionals, Lubrication Fundamentals, Third Edition, Revised and Expanded is a "must read" for maintenance professionals, lubricant formulators and marketers, chemists, and lubrication, surface, chemical, mechanical, and automotive engineers.

Book excerpt: This SAE Standard describes lubricating oils meeting the physical, chemical, and performance requirements of the American Petroluem Institute (API) SM category and the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) GF-4 standard. These oils are suitable for the lubrication of spark-ignition engines (gasoline engines). This document supersedes the military's Commercial Item Description (CID) A-A-52039.The conversion of the commercial item descriptions (CID) AA-52309 to SAE J2362 in November 1998 was done as an effort to align military needs with commercial manufacturers requirements and suppliers products. It is our belief that the API Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System (EOLCS), the American Chemistry Council (ACC) Petroleum Additives Product Approval Code of Practice, and the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) provide a robust framework of requirements and oversight to allow the Department of Defense to purchase these products directly, with the understanding that only products with a formal API license and meeting the most current ILSAC requirements will be procured.

This book was released on 1982 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Military lubricant orders for combat and tactical equipment specify use of a single-viscosity grade lubricant. The use of this type oil results in frequent oil changes caused by seasonal climatic temperature changes. Since the development of a multiseasonal MIL-L-2104 tactical/combat engine oil has been one of the major thrust areas for U.S. Army Mobility Equipment Research and Development Command (MERADCOM) (currently U.S. Army Belvoir Research and Development Center), a pilot fleet test using multiviscosity diesel engine oils was initiated at Ft. Carson, CO in January 1977 and later expanded to Ft. Lewis, WA in 1978-1979. Based on the successes achieved with these two tests, MERADCOM then decided to determine the effects of multiviscosity diesel engine oil on equipment readiness and proper engine lubrication/protection during very warm weather operations. To this end, a pilot field test was initiated in August 1980 at Ft. Bliss, TX involving E and H Troops of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. The test utilized M60A1 tanks and M113A1 Armored Personnel Carriers (APC). Although the consensus among the commanding officers, maintenance, and operating personnel was that a OW-20 multigrade oil or a 10W-30 multigrade oil would not adequately lubricant/protect the tactical/combat engine at the warm ambient temperatures involved, the test oils appeared to function in a satisfactory manner.

This book was released on 1982 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Military lube orders for combat and tactical equipment specify use of a single-viscosity grade lubricant with the grade depending on seasonal or climatic conditions. The use of this oil results in seasonal oil changes, regardless of the condition of the oil. Also, standard issue oils do not offer sufficient lubricant and engine protection over a wide range of ambient temperatures. Pilot field testing was conducted at Fort Carson, CO and Fort Lewis, WA. The objective of the testing was to evaluate the capability of MIL-L-46167 (5) arctic oil (OEA) to provide an interim solution to the lubrication problems being encountered. In addition, the data derived from the test were to be used as a basis for developing multigrade engine oils for Army tactical and combat equipment and to gain supplemental information covering the use of OEA lubricant over expanded temperature ranges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The military lube orders for combat and tactical equipment call for single viscosity grade oils. The use of this type oil results in frequent oil changes caused by seasonal and climatic temperature changes. The use of a single 'year-round' lubricant could eliminate the seasonal changes, possibly extend the oil drain interval, and provide a greater degree of combat readiness. MERADCOM began a pilot program to determine the feasibility of utilizing synthetic arctic engine oil in combat/tactical equipment outside arctic regions. The program involved M60A1 tanks and M151A2 jeeps at selected CONUS military installations. After extensive field testing and evaluation, it was determined that use of the synthetic lubricant had no adverse effect on the equipment. However, environment conditions and maintenance procedure greatly influenced the test results, causing high amounts of silicon to be injested. Thus, the normal oil drain intervals were not changed nor has a change in the vehicle engine failure/removal resulted. (Author).
