Book excerpt: The LSND experiment at Los Alamos has conducted searches for {anti?}{sub?} → {anti?}{sub e} oscillations using {anti?}{sub {mu}} from {mu} decay at rest and for?{sub {mu}} →?{sub e} oscillations using {nu}{sub {mu}} from?+ decay in flight. For the {anti {nu}}{sub {mu}} → {anti {nu}}{sub e} search, a total excess of 51.8{sub -16.9}{sup +18.7} ± 8.0 events is observed with e+ energy between 20 and 60 MeV, while for the {nu}{sub mu} → {nu}{sub e} search, a total excess of 18.1 ± 6.6 ± 4.0 events is observed with e− energy between 60 and 200 MeV. If attributed to neutrino oscillations, these excesses correspond to oscillation probabilities (averaged over the experimental energies and spatial acceptances) of (0.31 ± 0.12 ± 0.05)% and (0.26 ± 0.10 ± 0.05)%, respectively. For the future, the BooNE experiment at Fermilab could prove that neutrino oscillations occur and make precision measurements of?m2 and sin22?

Book excerpt: The LSND experiment provides evidence for neutrino oscillations from both the primary {bar [nu]}{sub {mu}} → {bar [nu]}{sub e} oscillation search and the secondary {nu}{sub {mu}} → {nu}{sub e} oscillation search. At present, this remains the only evidence for appearance neutrino oscillations and implies that at least one neutrino has a mass greater than 0.4 eV/c2 and that neutrinos comprise more than 1% of the mass of the universe. The MiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab, which is presently under construction, will provide a definitive test of the LSND results, and if the neutrino oscillation results are confirmed, will make a precision measurement of the oscillation parameters.

Book excerpt: The Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector took data during the years 1993 through 1998. The results of a final analysis of the data are reported here. In summary, the analysis resulted in a cleaner sample of decay-at-rest oscillation candidates and provided a strong constraint on beam related backgrounds. The oscillation probability is fitted to the correlated photon parameter in the inclusive electron sample. The fit yields an excess of 83.3 " 21.2 events attributable to neutrino oscillations. This corresponds to an oscillation probability of (0.25 " 0.06 " 0.04)% for that detector and beam configuration.

Neutrinos are similar to the more familiar electron, with one crucial difference: neutrinos do not carry electric charge. Because neutrinos are electrically neutral, they are not affected by the electromagnetic forces which act on electrons. Three types of neutrinos are known. Each type or 'flavour' of neutrino is related to a charged particle (which gives the corresponding neutrino its name). Hence, the 'electron neutrino' is associated with the electron, and two other neutrinos are associated with heavier versions of the electron called the muon and the tau. Further, it presents a new analysis paradigm to enable this measurement and a comprehensive study of the myriad systematic uncertainties involved in a search for a few-percent effect, while also rigorously investigating the statistical interpretation of the findings in the context of a sterile neutrino model. Among the scientific community, this analysis was quickly recognized as a foundational measurement in light of which all previous evidence for the sterile neutrino must now be (re)interpreted. The existence of sterile neutrinos has long been one of the key questions in the field. Not only are they a central component in many theories of new physics, but a number of past experiments have yielded results consistent with their existence. Nonetheless, they remain controversial: the interpretation of the data showing evidence for these sterile neutrinos is hotly debated.
