Book excerpt: In East Texas, a thick section of Upper Glen Rose strata was deposited in a newly defined intrashelf basin behind the Stuart City reef-margin complex. The Houston Trough is a half graben within the larger Brazos Basin. The stratigraphic section in this intrashelf basin forms a complex hydrocarbon system where porous grainstones are redeposited through sediment gravity-flow processes into the basin coevally with organic-rich mudstones. The depositional setting within the Houston Trough appears to have been deeper water and below storm-wave base. The water column was stratified where dysaerobic conditions existed, allowing for organic matter to accumulate and be preserved in low-energy muddy sediment. Grain-rich gravity-flows rich in ooids intraclasts, and mollusks derived from the shallower shelf to the northwest were deposited in the basin and provide the matrix porosity and permeability for the Alabama Ferry and Fort Trinidad fields. The Upper Glen Rose interval is composed of lithofacies that vary widely within the Houston Trough. Five lithofacies are recognized on the basis of sedimentary features, texture, fabric, biota, minerology, and organic-matter content: (1) laminated to non-laminated argillaceous mudstone to wackestone; (2) laminated to non-laminated terrigenous mudstone to siltstone; (3) intraclast–ooid skeletal packstone; (4) intraclast–bivalve–ooid grainstone; and (5) oyster rudstone/wackestone. A majority of allochems, such as ooids, intraclasts, and mollusks within the grain-rich lithofacies, were derived from the shallow-water, higher energy, oxygenated shelf. The intraclast–bivalve–ooid grainstones interbedded with organic-rich argillaceous and calcareous mudstones were previously interpreted as in-situ tidally influenced, high-energy, shallow-water shoals, however reconstruction of the depositional setting and interpretation of the vertical and lateral distribution of lithofacies now suggest they were deposited as grain-rich density flows into the deeper water Houston Trough. This new model can provide a fresh approach to exploration and production of similar juxtaposed mudstones and grainstones throughout the southern East Texas Basin.

Book excerpt: A 70-foot interval from the middle part of the Glen Rose Limestone (Lower Cretaceous) has been sampled at 35 localities in central Texas for the purpose of reconstructing vertical and lateral changes of depositional environment on the San Marcos Platform. A marker unit, the Corbula Interval, crops out in the center of the stratigraphic section. The middle Glen Rose was deposited as a mosaic of shoal-water lithotopes in a broad lagoon behind the Gulf Coast Reef Trend. Over part of the Platform the sea was sufficiently shallow to permit the development of local offlap sequences. As a result, intertidal and supratidal units comprise a significant proportion of many local facies successions. In Blanco and Hays counties there are two distinct patterns of vertical facies succession. Closer to the Llano Uplift (Blanco County) 3 to 5 offlap cycles are seen in the 70-foot interval. These involve a gradational trend from subtidal through supratidal facies. Each cycle is bracketed by sharply-defined bedding planes. The cycles are regressional and result from the progradation of carbonate mud flats into a shelf sea. Further to the east and more distant from the Llano Uplift (Hays County) the facies tract lacks the imbricated succession of regressive cycles. Subtidal units comprise the bulk of the section. The difference in the vertical facies pattern for the two areas may result from their relationship to the ancient shoreline. Because the Llano Uplift was emergent during deposition of the middle Glen Rose, the outcrops closest to the Uplift contain abundant evidence of tidal flat sedimentation. Mud mounds and small islands adjacent to land may have served as nuclei for the development of local offlap sequences. To the southeast (Hays County) the shelf sea may have been slightly deeper and probably lacked the nuclei necessary to initiate these sequences. One complete cycle, the Corbula Cycle, crops out in both areas and may record a brief period of emergence for most of the San Marcos Platform

Book excerpt: During the Cretaceous, unique tectonic and climatic conditions favored the creation of the shallow Western Interior Seaway that divided the North American continent into two distinct landmasses. This vast shallow-marine environment promoted the deposition of thick series of platform carbonates, which constitute an excellent record of ecological crises resulting from the high sensitivity of carbonate producers to environmental changes. The Glen Rose Formation is a thick shallow-marine carbonate succession deposited during the Albian (Early Cretaceous) period over South Central and North Central Texas as a part of a large, extensive Central Texas carbonate platform represented by the Trinity, Fredericksburg, and Washita sequences. The Glen Rose Formation is particularly well known for containing abundant dinosaur tracks and trackways that can be observed in outcrop at numerous sites throughout South Central and North Central Texas, such as Canyon Lake Gorge (Comal County). Recently, well-preserved tracks and trackways (theropod and sauropod) have been described at Government Canyon State Natural Area, northwestern Bexar County near San Antonio, TX. This is a significant discovery as it is the first Glen Rose track site to be identified within Bexar County. It is the aim of this study to determine the position of this dinosaur track-bearing section within the overall stratigraphy of the Glen Rose Formation and to assess the paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic conditions that prevailed in this location during the time of deposition. Based on the evolution of carbon isotopes within the section and the outcrop gamma-ray profile, the section is correlated to the lowermost portion of the upper Glen Rose Member, constraining the age of the section to 109.8-109.5 Ma. Bulk-rock geochemical data suggest that these dinosaurs were living under very warm and humid conditions characteristic of intertropical regions. The integration of data permits the development of a sequence stratigraphic framework for the section: a third-order sequence boundary separates the section into a late highstand systems tract and an early transgressive systems tract. Dinosaur tracks and trackways are preserved at the tops of parasequences belonging to this late highstand systems tract.
