Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive handbook and ready reference details all the main achievements in the field of perovskite-based and related mixed-oxide materials. The authors discuss, in an unbiased manner, the potentials as well as the challenges related to their use, thus offering new perspectives for research and development on both an academic and industrial level. The first volume begins by summarizing the different synthesis routes from molten salts at high temperatures to colloidal crystal template methods, before going on to focus on the physical properties of the resulting materials and their related applications in the fields of electronics, energy harvesting, and storage as well as electromechanics and superconductivity. The second volume is dedicated to the catalytic applications of perovskites and related mixed oxides, including, but not limited to total oxidation of hydrocarbons, dry reforming of methane and denitrogenation. The concluding section deals with the development of chemical reactors and novel perovskite-based applications, such as fuel cells and high-performance ceramic membranes. Throughout, the contributions clearly point out the intimate links between structure, properties and applications of these materials, making this an invaluable tool for materials scientists and for catalytic and physical chemists.

Book excerpt: In this work, catalysts based on cobalt supported on ZrO2 and CeO2 and CoCeMnOx were studied for the CO preferential oxidation (COPrOx) in hydrogen-rich stream able to feed fuel cells. Among them, the CoCeMnOx formulation showed the highest CO conversion at low temperatures, while the cobalt oxide supported on ceria presented the best selectivity toward CO2. The Co3O4 spinel was the active phase for the CO preferential oxidation detected in all catalysts. However, the CoOx-CeO2 and CoCeMnOx catalysts resulted more active than cobalt oxide supported on zirconia. The presence of ceria close to cobalt species promotes the redox properties and enhances the catalytic activity. In the CoCeMnOx catalyst prepared by coprecipitation, the incorporation of Mn represented an additional positive effect. The presence of Mn promoted the reoxidation of Co2+ to Co3+ and, consequently, the activity increased at low temperature. By X-ray diffraction (XRD) of CoOx-ZrO2 and the CoOx-CeO2 catalysts, the Co3O4 spinel and ZrO2 or CeO2 were identified in agreement with laser-Raman spectra. At the same time, the CoCeMnOx catalyst, prepared by coprecipitation of precursor salts, showed an incipient development of a new phase (Mn,Co)3O4 mixed spinel, due to the intimate contact between elements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface science has existed as a recognized discipline for more than 20 years. During this period, the subject has expanded in two important ways. On the one hand, the techniques available for studying surfaces, both experimental and theoretical, have grown in number and in sophistication. On the other hand, surface science has been applied to an increasing number of areas of technology, such as catalysis, semicon ductor processing, new materials development, corrosion prevention, adhesion and tribology. . There is, however, no sharp division between fundamental and applied surface science. New techniques can immediately be applied to technologically important problems. Improvements in understanding of fundamental phenomena such as epi taxial growth of one metal on another, or the bonding of hydrocarbons to metal sur faces, to name just two examples, have direct consequences for technology. Surface science has also become very much an interdisciplinary subject; physics, chemistry, materials science, chemical and electronical engineering all draw upon and contribute to surface science. The intimate relationship between principles and applications of surface science forms the theme of this proceedings volume. The contributions were all presented as invited lectures at an Australian-German Workshop on Surface Science held at Coogee Beach, Sydney, Australia, in December 1991. The contributors, all active surface scientists in their respective countries, were asked to highlight recent develop ments in their own areas of activity involving new techniques, advances in funda mental understanding or new applications in technology.

Book excerpt: Ceria-supported Pt catalysts have great potential for oxidation reactions and industrial applications such as vehicle emission control. These applications can be greatly benefited by tailoring this catalyst to meet their specific requirements. Single-atom catalysts have the highest atom efficiency and can have superior reactivity and selectivity. The synthesis of a ceria-supported Pt single-atom catalyst by methods that can be used in an industrial setup and scale is very important. This dissertation reports the synthesis of a thermally stable ceria-supported Pt single-atom catalyst by high-temperature calcination. Moreover, the limits in the amount of Pt that can be stabilized as single atoms and the anchoring sites for Pt single atoms are also discussed. Activation of the ceria-supported Pt single-atom catalyst to achieve high activity at low temperature for CO oxidation is presented and the catalyst characteristics affecting the activity are also discussed. Finally, a synthesis method is presented to stabilize Pt as single atoms on ceria which can remain stable at high temperature not only under oxidizing conditions but also reducing conditions while still exhibiting high activity for low-temperature CO oxidation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four catalysts (hopcalite, Whetlerite, a supported palladium, and a supported platinum) were tested for efficiency in promoting the oxidation of carbon monoxide (CO). At room temperature and 50% RH, hopcalite has no catalytic capability and platinum has practically none. At room temperature and 15% RH, hopcalite is superior to platinum in catalyzing the oxidation of CO. Hopcalite is more efficient than either of the other three catalysts in the 52 to 66 C (125 to 150 F) temperature range at both humidities. Platinum and palladium are superior to both hopcalite and Whetlerite at both humidities in the 113 to 135 C (235 to 275 F) temperature range. Higher humidity decreases the CO-oxidizing capabilities of hopcalite and Whetlerite but does not do so for platinum and palladium. Whetlerite is in the lower-performing group of catalysts under all except one of the different conditions used in the tests. For the hopcalite, palladium, and platinum catalysts there is a temperature below 135 C (275 F) and above 68 C (155 F) at which CO can be oxidized efficiently.

Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive overview of the most recent developments in both total oxidation and combustion and also in selective oxidation. For each topic, fundamental aspects are paralleled with industrial applications. The book covers oxidation catalysis, one of the major areas of industrial chemistry, outlining recent achievements, current challenges and future opportunities. One distinguishing feature of the book is the selection of arguments which are emblematic of current trends in the chemical industry, such as miniaturization, use of alternative, greener oxidants, and innovative systems for pollutant abatement. Topics outlined are described in terms of both catalyst and reaction chemistry, and also reactor and process technology.
