Book excerpt: Excellent high-lift and cruise performance of a small, round, fixed circulation control wing (CCW) trailing edge fitted to a supercritical airfoil has been confirmed by subsonic wind tunnel investigations. This fixed-trailing- edge blown high-lift airfoil generates a negligible subsonic cruise drag penalty, but can generate a section lift coefficient near 7.0. This configuration is a significant improvement over the flight-proven A-6/CCW airfoil that had similar lift performance, but had a large trailing edge requiring mechanization for transition to cruise flight. Further, the large leading edge radius of the supercritical airfoil allows operating at high lift over a moderate angle-of-attack range. These results imply the feasibility of a mono-element airfoil with no moving components required for high lift; the transition from the cruise to the high-lift configuration is accomplished by blowing from a fixed slot. The favorable characteristics of both the cruise and high-lift airfoils are retained without compromise to either. (Author).

He held Chairs of Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics at Technische U- versität Braunschweig during 37 years and directed the Institute of Aerodynamics of the Deutsche Forschungsanstalt für Luftfahrt in Braunschweig. He also directed the Aerodynamische Versuchsanstalt Göttingen and served in the Executive Board of the German Aerospace Center (DFVLR). Hermann Schlichting played a leading role in the rebuilding of aerospace research in Germany after the Second World War. th The occasion of his 100 birthday in the year 2007 was an excellent opportunity to acknowledge important ideas and accomplishments that Hermann Schlichting c- tributed to science. The editors of this volume are the present successors of Hermann Schlichting in his role as director of the two research institutes in Braunschweig. We were glad to host a scientific colloquium in his honor on 28 September 2007. Invited former scholars of Hermann Schlichting reviewed his work in boundary layer theory and in aircraft aerodynamics followed by presentations of important research results of his institutes today.

Book excerpt: "A circulation control elliptic airfoil section with a 15-percent thickness-to-chord ratio which incorporates a spiral trailing edge was evaluated subsonically to determine its aerodynamic characteristics. The spiral-shaped Coanda surface was previously evaluated with a different leading edge. The airfoil, designated NCCR 1505-7567S, has an uncambered forward half and a cambered aft portion resulting in a 0.005-percent camber for the profile. This particular combination of camber was selected because it was analytically predicted to have good critical Mach number characteristics in the range of interest. The range of momentum coefficient was limited due to the relatively early onset of Coanda jet-tunnel floor interference; however, lift coefficients in the excess of 4.25 were produced at momentum coefficients of 0.16. Equivalent lift-to-drag ratios in excess of 40 were also produced when lift coefficient reached approximately 1.0"--Report documentation page.
