Firstly the focus lies on the ecological properties of concepts such as Low Impact Development (LID), Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD), Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) and Blue-Green Infrastructure (BGI) especially with regard to the site conditions in the study area. Through a literature research no specific impediments which would hinder an potential implementation could be detected. However there are still general obstacles that discourage a more intensive utilization. In the practical part the Urban Biophysical Environments & Technologies Simulator (UrbanBEATS), a dedicated software for the planning of sustainable storm water management, is used to detect suitable types and locations for the elements of sustainable storm water management in the study area. In a further step the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) is applied in order to assess the hydrological performance in quantitative terms. The performance during five different storm events are recorded and show a peak runoff reduction up to 4.26% in the total system, a peak fooding reduction up to 20.28% and a fooding volume reduction up to 17.49%.

In the traditional development mode and the gray infrastructure, the rainwater is hard to permeate underground, which artificially change the urban water cycle in the natural process. It is leading to a series of ecological problems such as surface runoff increase, underground water levels fall, and frequent urban waterlogging. Among them flooding and water quality are the most common challenges. In order to mitigate water quality and adapt to flooding, many cities adopted strategies in the low impact development to address flooding and environmental problems. This research is aiming to analyze the application of low impact development (LID) in the high density unban space planning and design and take Singapore southern waterfront design as an example. This research reviews a range of materials. The information extracted including the nature of stormwater, the influence of high-density urban development to water infiltration and runoff, approaches and facilities of stormwater management, introduces best management practices (BMPs) and the low impact development strategies (practices and site design). This research engages a multiple case studies with analysis of the application of low impact development in Landover, Tampa, Philadelphia, Seattle, and Portland. And then the research combines the theory and the design of Singapore southern waterfront area to discuss the application of the low impact development water treatment in the design and planning of high density area planning and design. The research also considers how LID can be integrated into current urban development and explains the related economic and social benefits.

Book excerpt: This book is born from the will to undertake a joint research path on the general theme of transformation and renewal of urban contexts, deepening the case of historical Chinese and Italian cities. The research collected case studies and theoretical elaborations, focusing on the Chinese city of Shanghai and Chongqing and other Italian urban realities, filtering contents around thematic nodes such as memory, narration and reflection on new urban models. In particular, the initial idea emerged from shared reflections between Chinese and Italian scientific professors responsible for international agreements established between the Department of Architecture and the Design of Sapienza University of Rome and Chinese remarkable institutions. Indeed, the present research, promoted and directed by Dina Nencini, was joined by Anna Irene Del Monaco of Sapienza and Shaoming LU of Shanghai Jiaotong University.
