Book Synopsis Seismic Risk Assessment and Retrofitting by : Alper Ilki
Download or read book Seismic Risk Assessment and Retrofitting written by Alper Ilki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-03 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many more people are coming to live in earthquake-prone areas, especially urban ones. Many such areas contain low-rise, low-cost housing, while little money is available to retrofit the buildings to avoid total collapse and thus potentially save lives. The lack of money, especially in developing countries, is exacerbated by difficulties with administration, implementation and public awareness. The future of modern earthquake engineering will come to be dominated by new kinds of measuring technologies, new materials developed especially for low-rise, low-cost buildings, simpler and thus lower cost options for retrofitting, cost cutting and raising public awareness. The book covers all the areas involved in this complex issue, from the prevention of total building collapse, through improvement techniques, to legal, financial, taxation and social issues. The contributors have all made valuable contributions in their own particular fields; all of them are or have been closely involved with the issues that can arise in seismic zones in any country. The recent research results published here offer invaluable pointers to practicing engineers and administrators, as well as other scientists whose work involves saving the lives and property of the many millions of people who live and work in hazardous buildings.
Book Synopsis Concrete Solutions by : Michael Grantham
Download or read book Concrete Solutions written by Michael Grantham and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 1364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concrete Solutions contains the contributions from some 30 countries to Concrete Solutions, the 6th International Conference on Concrete Repair (Thessaloniki, Greece, 20-23 June 2016). Strengthening and retrofitting are major themes in this volume, with NDT and electrochemical repair following closely, discussing the latest advances and technologies in concrete repair. The book brings together some interesting and challenging theoretical approaches and questions if we really understand and approach such topics as corrosion monitoring correctly. Concrete Solutions is an essential reference work for those working in the concrete repair field, from engineers to architects and from students to clients. The Concrete Solutions Series of international conferences on concrete repair began in 2003 with a conference held in St. Malo, France in association with INSA Rennes. Subsequent conferences have seen the Series partnering with the University of Padua (Italy) in 2009, with TU Dresden (Germany) in 2011 and with Queen’s University Belfast (Northern Ireland) in 2014. In 2016 Thessaloniki (Greece) hosted the conference, partnering with both Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH). The next conference in the series will be held in 2019 in Istanbul.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complete coverage of earthquake-resistant concrete building design Written by a renowned seismic engineering expert, this authoritative resource discusses the theory and practice for the design and evaluation of earthquakeresisting reinforced concrete buildings. The book addresses the behavior of reinforced concrete materials, components, and systems subjected to routine and extreme loads, with an emphasis on response to earthquake loading. Design methods, both at a basic level as required by current building codes and at an advanced level needed for special problems such as seismic performance assessment, are described. Data and models useful for analyzing reinforced concrete structures as well as numerous illustrations, tables, and equations are included in this detailed reference. Seismic Design of Reinforced Concrete Buildings covers: Seismic design and performance verification Steel reinforcement Concrete Confined concrete Axially loaded members Moment and axial force Shear in beams, columns, and walls Development and anchorage Beam-column connections Slab-column and slab-wall connections Seismic design overview Special moment frames Special structural walls Gravity framing Diaphragms and collectors Foundations
Book Synopsis Concrete Structures in Earthquake by : Thomas T. C. Hsu
Download or read book Concrete Structures in Earthquake written by Thomas T. C. Hsu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-21 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers 23 papers by top experts from 11 countries, presented at the 3rd Houston International Forum: Concrete Structures in Earthquake. Designing infrastructures to resist earthquakes has always been the focus and mission of scientists and engineers located in tectonically active regions, especially around the “Pacific Rim of Fire” including China, Japan, and the USA. The pace of research and innovation has accelerated in the past three decades, reflecting the need to mitigate the risk of severe damage to interconnected infrastructures, and to facilitate the incorporation of high-speed computers and the internet. The respective papers focus on the design and analysis of concrete structures subjected to earthquakes, advance the state of knowledge in disaster mitigation, and address the safety of infrastructures in general.

Book Synopsis Performance of Circular Reinforced Concrete Bridge Columns Under Bidirectional Earthquake Loading by : Mahmoud M. Hachem
Download or read book Performance of Circular Reinforced Concrete Bridge Columns Under Bidirectional Earthquake Loading written by Mahmoud M. Hachem and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes the dynamic testing of 4 circular reinforced concrete bridge columns. The specimens were divided into 2 pairs, with each pair subjected to a different ground motion. Within each pair, one specimen was subjected to one component of the ground motion, while the other was subjected to 2 components. Two analytical studies were carried out for a wide array of column heights, diameters, and axial load intensities. The columns were subjected to large suites of ground motions scaled to match on average the design response spectrum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This technical report describes a computer-based model of urban disaster recovery. The model simulates the recovery dynamics of households, businesses, neighborhoods, and the community as a whole following a disaster. The model was applied to the City of Los Angeles for the 1994 Northridge earthquake, using detailed data on the conditions and effects of the earthquake for testing and calibrating purposes. Results indicated favorable performance in certain aspects of the model and identified areas where further refinements are needed. The report concludes with a discussion of potential applications, advances, limitations, and priorities for further research.
