Book excerpt: Simulator scenarios were developed to train student pilots in A-10 aircraft low level navigation (LLN) and elementary basic attack maneuvers (BAMs). The primary objective of this effort was to evaluate the effectiveness of these scenarios using the A-10 configured Advanced Simulator for Pilot Training (ASPT) as the training medium. Training effectiveness was assessed using simulator automated performance measures and instructor pilot (IP) evaluations of student aircraft performances in a transfer paradigm. There were 42 subjects in the BAM phase of the experiment and 36 subjects in the LLN phase. Simulator measures showed enhanced performance as a function of training for three of the five BAM tasks trained; LLN simulator performance data were not analyzed due to difficulty with the automated scoring procedures. Power values determined for aircraft performance measures and inferences based on the results of similar efforts made questionable the validity of using IP performance evaluations for test purposes as was done in this experiment. Discussion is directed toward future test programs requiring assessment of pilot performances in tactical aircraft. (Author).

Book excerpt: This paper describes the use of an A-7 Vital IV (three screen) visual simulator in a low altitude training program. This program is the first to use such a simulator in the training of tactical fighter pilots to operate in the low altitude environment. The program is part of the syllabus used in the Air National Guard, Fighter Weapons School program for highly experience A-7D pilots. The Low Altitude Training portion of this syllabus consists of 12 hours of academic instruction, a one hour simulator and a two phase flying program of at least two aircraft sorties. This paper discusses the simulator profile, explains each task, how it is accomplished and provides a subjective evaluation of its effectiveness. The paper identifies the training limitations imposed by such a low fidelity visual system, recommends several additional uses within the existing capability of the simulator, and identifies several minimum criteria for any 'full mission simulator'. Book excerpt: The subject of low altitude flying training has received increased attention in recent years for political and technical reasons, including cost, environmental impact and the expanding training requirements of modern airborne weapon systems. Conducting low level flying training live' is becoming less and less acceptable in many NATO nations, while the threat continues to demand even lower altitudes at higher speeds. Restrictions on low flying training exist in many countries, and include reduced low flying time, speed restrictions, and altitudes restricted to no lower than 1000 ft.

Based on the most current research in nutrient timing, Performance Nutrition blends theory with applied content and real-life examples to help nutritionists, athletes, and coaches design nutrition plans based on each athlete’s individual needs and the specific demands of the sport. While other texts may provide a brief discussion of nutrient timing as a tool for improving sport performance, Performance Nutrition: Applying the Science of Nutrient Timing focuses solely on this newly developing facet of sport nutrition. Distinguished authors Krista Austin (a physiologist and nutritionist) and Bob Seebohar (a sport dietitian and USA Triathlon elite coach) share their extensive practical experience with athletes at all levels from recreational through professional. They provide specific nutrient timing recommendations for a wide range of sport types, including endurance, strength and power, combative (weight classified), and team sports. In particular, you will learn information on using nutrient timing theory to counteract altitude, heat and humidity, cold exposure, and air pollution. A chapter devoted to competition-day guidelines will help you keep your athletes hydrated, energized, and ready to perform. Plus, nutritional timelines, highlighted in special callout boxes and placed at the edge of the page for quick reference, offer visual plans of what athletes should eat in the hours leading up to and during competition. Practical and user friendly, this text also includes “In Practice” application exercises, mini-case studies, and four extended case studies to assist in translating the information to your own practice. Incorporating nutrient ingestion timing into your athlete’s training program can promote enhanced recovery, create positive training adaptations, improve body composition, support immunity, and ultimately enhance performance. With Performance Nutrition: Applying the Science of Nutrient Timing, you will gain the foundational knowledge and practical techniques to develop individualized nutrition programs to improve training, performance, and recovery.

This book was released on 1967 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sixteen Air Force pilots served as subjects in simulator evaluations of terrain-following displays. In making the evaluations, each subject took part in two experiments which presented different test conditions. Before beginning their tests the pilots flew several training flights. One of these flights included a series of basic instrument maneuvers called a 'Pattern B' which was used to establish performance baselines. Each pilot's absolute altitude error scores made during the terrain-following flights of the first experiment were averaged to give his terrain-following altitude error score for that experiment, and a similar average was calculated for each pilot's Pattern B flights. The Pattern B scores for each pilot were then correlated with his average terrain-following error scores for the first and second experiments. The correlation of the Pattern B scores with the scores of the first experiment was +.735 (p .001), and the correlation of the Pattern B scores with those of the second experiment was +.704 (p .001). Comparisons of actual and predicted terrain-following error scores revealed an average prediction error of 8.4 percent for the first experiment and 9.2 percent for the second. The correlations indicate that a pilot's ability to maneuver while cross-checking basic instruments can be used to predict his ability to track a terrain-following command signal with a fairly high degree of accuracy.
