Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jenny is a third-rate music-hall chanteuse living in Edwardian London. When she remarks to her mentor and lover Leo that she never wants to grow old, she is unwittingly making a pact with the Devil. Her contract to love him will reside at the Metaphysical Bank in High Street Kensington—forever. Leo has lived through thousands of years in numerous incarnations. As he gleefully exploits what 20th century London has to offer—as a magician ("the Great Pantoffsky"), fighter pilot, coke dealer, city banker—Jenny finds that the joy of eternal youth is short-lived. Her unchanging appearance provokes questions and Jenny has to move abroad or constantly reinvent herself. For 60 years she has to pass herself off as her own offspring. When she bears a real daughter that may or may not be Leo's, his destructive nature comes to the fore. She flees from him and destroys the contract that she has never read. At the same time Leo understands that Jenny is the one woman that he has truly loved and that perhaps it is time the Devil made a stab at family life, whatever the consequences. A compelling journey through 20th-century Europe and beyond, Miranda Miller’s ingenious take on the Faust story is by turns humorous, erotic, and terrifying.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Faustus is a great Elizabethan tragedy by Christopher Marlow originally published in 1600. The story is based on an earlier anonymous classic German legend involving worldly ambition, black magic and surrender to the devil. It remains one of the most famous plays of the English Renaissance. Dr. John Faustus, a brilliant, well-respected German doctor grows dissatisfied with the limits of human knowledge - logic, medicine, law, and religion, and decides that he has learned all that can be learned by conventional means. What is left for him, he thinks, but magic. His friends instruct him in the black arts, and he begins his new career as a magician by summoning up Mephastophilis, a devil. Despite Mephastophilis’s warnings about the horrors of hell, Faustus tells the devil to return to his master, Lucifer, with an offer of Faustus’s soul in exchange for twenty-four years of service from Mephastophilis. On the final night before the expiration of the twenty-four years, Faustus is overcome by fear and remorse. He begs for mercy, but it is too late. At midnight, a host of devils appears and carries his soul off to hell. Marlowe’s dramatic interpretation of the Faust legend is a theatrical masterpiece. With immense poetic skill, and psychological insight that greatly influenced the works of William Shakespeare and other dramatists, Dr. Faustus combines soaring poetry, psychological depth, and grand stage spectacle. Marlowe created powerful scenes that invest the work with tragic dignity, among them the doomed man’s calling upon Christ to save him and his ultimate rejection of salvation for the embrace of Helen of Troy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joel B. Lande’s Persistence of Folly challenges the accepted account of the origins of German theater by focusing on the misunderstood figure of the fool, whose spontaneous and impish jest captivated audiences, critics, and playwrights from the late sixteenth through the early nineteenth century. Lande radically expands the scope of literary historical inquiry, showing that the fool was not a distraction from attempts to establish a serious dramatic tradition in the German language. Instead, the fool was both a fixture on the stage and a nearly ubiquitous theme in an array of literary critical, governmental, moral-philosophical, and medical discourses, figuring centrally in broad-based efforts to assign laughter a proper time, place, and proportion in society. Persistence of Folly reveals the fool as a cornerstone of the dynamic process that culminated in the works of Lessing, Goethe, and Kleist. By reorienting the history of German theater, Lande’s work conclusively shows that the highpoint of German literature around 1800 did not eliminate irreverent jest in the name of serious drama, but instead developed highly refined techniques for integrating the comic tradition of the stage fool.

Wrong! It actually comes from Goethe's Faust--a tragic work about a man who sells his soul. The themes and plot of Faust seems right out of a modern horror novel--if you can understand it! Unlike most archaic translations of Faust, BookCaps puts a fresh spin on Goethe's classic by using language modern readers won't struggle to make sense of. The original English text is also presented in the book, along with a comparable version of both text. We all need refreshers every now and then. Whether you are a student trying to cram for that big final, or someone just trying to understand a book more, BookCaps can help. We are a small, but growing company, and are adding titles every month.

Book excerpt: This book is about the concealed love between Adam and Mary. They loved in an unknown environment guided by a Muse to give them the ambition to experience ultimate agape love. In this author's imagination, he wishes to demonstrate that love on this level is feasible, but only in an imaginary mind that is trying to correlate a thought of inspiration without experiencing the feeling of love. Imagine the Muse trying to communicate with two minds about love almost divine, but not lived in heaven. The book also addresses other lifestyles which are reality. The lack of courtship before consummating a marriage creates uncertainties and an ill-prepared future for the sustained marriage vows promised. The marriages fail, resulting in bitterness and conflict over the gains attained. Children suffer over the splitting of the marriages. In the final analysis, it boils down to men failing to satisfy all aspects of their relationship with women, making a mockery of the sacred vow "until death do us part."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being a leader and saving one’s soul by successfully doing one’s job is a very complex mission. Too often, leadership is but a footnote to ‘a Faustian pact’, an ethical hell that requires the conscientious use of an internal moral GPS. Faust’s story is a guide, capable of giving substance to our most hidden shadows, living with the presence of good and evil, re-establishing a relationship with nature and trying to recover that feminine energy that is present in each of us, often repressed. It could become a lifesaver for learning to juggle in a world that burns everything and everyone on the altar of profit. It is a tale that represents the effort to go beyond rationality and the accumulation of knowledge, a journey to escape the boredom of a life lived through the eyes of others. Perhaps at the end of this journey we will be able to smile at what K. Kraus writes: ‘The devil is an optimist if he thinks he can make men worse’. After all, by now, dear Mephistopheles, I know what you look like, and you are an optimist if you think I will sign a pact with you. Or maybe not?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Pocket Kobbe's Complete Opera Book is the world's leading reference work on opera, and (in the words of Bernard Levin) 'no single-volume operatic guide can possibly compare with it'. Kobbe is the only book which summaries the libretti of the world's opera, describes their music and gives a history of their performance within a single volume. But it is a large and relatively expensive book. The new pocket edition, at a price accessible to the huge new audience for opera, has been redesigned and extended, existing entries have been rewritten, and new operas included. The total number of works covered is now over 200, including important new works like John Adams Nixon in China, Harrison Birtwistle's Gawain and Thomas Ades's Powder Her Face, and a number of half-forgotten works that are now undergoing revival. Unlike the previous edition, it is now simply arranged, alphabetically by composer. Lord Harewood's strongly individual commentaries, together with his unparalleled knowledge of and enthusiasm for opera, make the New Pocket Kobbe a book no opera-goer can afford to be without.
