Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophers don't often write about the heart. At least, analytical philosophers don't. Why is this? Philosophers are said to live life ?in their heads? rather than ?from their hearts.? But even if that is so, why don't they think and write about the heart? Moreover, it can hardly have escaped philosophers' attention that matters of the heart are central to what we human beings value most about our lives, including our lives with animals. Philosophers write a lot about friendship and love, but they tend to do so in terms that leave out heartfelt connection. They speak rather of commitment to one another and each other's well-being, or taking each other as ends, or sharing deliberative standpoints or living life together, or a whole host of other topics, and much less about mutual emotional vulnerability and sharing and being in one another's hearts. Surely one explanation of philosophers' reticence is that talk of ?the heart? seems unavoidably metaphorical. It turns out to be easy enough, however, to cash the metaphor in if we simply take ?heart? refers to a cluster of emotional susceptibilities that have an essentially reciprocating structure. The heart aims at heartfelt connection-at shared experience of joys and sorrows, hopes and fears, and other personal emotions. We seek naturally to share these feelings with others and must suppress our natural tendencies if we wish to avoid doing so. Our heart's wish is to be open to other hearts in the hope that they will be open to ours, and thereby us, in return. This book is a systematic treatment-perhaps the first-of ?attitudes of the heart?-remorse (versus guilt), love, trust, gratitude, personal anger (versus righteous anger), jealousy, and others-and their role in mediating personal relationship, attachment, and connection. This is obviously interesting in its own right, but it also shows how heartfelt attitudes mirror more extensively studied ?reactive attitudes? of guilt, resentment, and blame (?attitudes of the will?). Whereas the latter mediate moral relations of mutual respect and accountability, attitudes of the heart are the currency of heartfelt connection and personal relationship.

Martin's discussions of such virtues as caring, courage, fidelity, and honesty are superb, the examples well-chosen, the argument personal but nevertheless rigorous, the prose accessible and enjoyable to read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attitudes represent everything in life. They define the way we choose to conduct ourselves on a daily basis. Good attitudes are contagious. They draw people to us and eventually to God. In this book Emmanuel talks about five attitudes that can help you do just that: humility, happiness (joy), love, hospitality and generosity. These five attitudes do not only make us more approachable. They also help us be at our best. More importantly, they are channels through which God shows up to people we encounter on a daily basis. These attitudes are not just values we acquire out of our own desire. We primarily experience them through prayer. As we ask and pray to God, God will empower us with the ability to be humble, loving, happy, hospitable and generous.

For Christians to come to the level of holiness and greatness before God and man, they have to change their bad attitude. The way Christians live and practice their faith has to change for good so that God will be glorified. As for us, we have this crowd of witnesses around us. So then, let us rid ourselves of everything that gets in the way and of the sin that holds on us highly, and let us run with determination the race that lies before us. Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus Christ, on whom our faith depends from the beginning to the end.

Book excerpt: What we know and what we do are crucial, but so too is who we are. God wants to shape our hearts. The gospel is God's means of transforming our hearts. It produces love, godly fear, joy, peace, humility, confidence, thankfulness, contentment and hope. With gospel surgery, we can 'cultivate life on the inside'. Yes, it's radical and often painful, but the author speaks with the heart of a pastor as well as the mind of a 'heart surgeon'. He speaks from a position of humility and personal experience. This is a liberating book that enables us to be all we are meant to be in Christ. Its teaching will change your life.

In modern times this debate has received an enormous resurgence of interest and the contribution in 1962 by P.F. Strawson with the publication of his essay "Freedom and Resentment" has generated a wide range of discussion and criticism in the philosophical community and beyond. The debate is of central importance to recent developments in the free will literature and has shaped the way contemporary philosophers now approach the problem. This volume brings together a focused selection of the major contributions and reactions to the free will and responsibility debate inspired by Strawson's contribution. McKenna and Russell also provide a comprehensive overview of the debate. This book will be of great value to scholars of Strawson and those interested in the free will debate more generally.
