Here were two pastors, both highly successful in their work, lost to the foreign field because being a missionary would have interfered with their human affections. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Missions and romance--a great match! This easy read is a delightful introduction to missionary biography and a great gift for singles, college students, Christian families, missionaries and all those who love them. In six vignettes, the author recounts the romances of: Adoniram and Ann Judson Robert and Mary Moffat David and Mary Livingstone James and Emily Gilmour Francois and Christina Coillard Henry Martyn and Lydia Grenfell The book is also classified by various scenarios of courtship: Courtship while in the homeland Courtship while serving on the mission field Enduring parental objections Attempting courtship through correspondence Handling unusual offers of marriage Even a "hopeless attachment" that did not end well These stories are refreshing, relevant, and helpful to ministry-minded Christians today. In the introduction and afterword, David Hosaflook offers reflections from his own experiences as a single and a married missionary, giving advice to today's missionaries. This book serves well as: a text for family devotions a Valentine's Day gift a supplemental text for missions classes a gift at missions conferences, retreats, and student gatherings a tool and conversation starter for missions agencies preparing their missionaries Mini-reviews from missionaries, parents, pastors, college professors, wives, and husbands: "Engaging and moving! To read again of the sacrifices these men and women were willing to suffer for the cause of Christ made me wonder again how much I'm willing to sacrifice." "I appreciated the clarity of the Gospel message--the very reason these missionaries suffered and gave up so much. I am encouraged in ministering to my husband!" "The book highlights some of the most intimate targets that the enemy exploits in our relationships." "We are always looking for missionary biographies like this that speak to the heart and are good for older kids and teens." "What a read! Helpful in preparing future students for the mission field." "I was struck by the overwhelming need for God to work through men! It is a great and needed read for all ages, but especially Millennials as they mature into their thirties." Some of the memorable missionary quotes from this book: "How short is time, how boundless is eternity!" (Ann Hasseltine Judson) "Oh! The intense loneliness of Christ's life, not a single one understood Him! He bore it. O Jesus, let me follow in thy steps!" (James Gilmour) "I would rather see my daughter a missionary than a princess." (Christina Mackintosh's mother) "I discovered that God provides all the companionship we need as we wait for the kind of companionship we want." (David Hosaflook) "'Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.' No one who does not go away, leaving all and being alone, can feel the force of this promise." (James Gilmour) "Thousands of miles lay between them, yet their prayers were ever ascending in united petition to Heaven." (Belle Brain, of Robert and Mary Moffat) "He who appoints crosses and disappointments also imparts resignation and grace sufficient unto the day." (Robert Moffat) "In God's arithmetic, one and one make more than two." (Belle Brain, of Robert and Mary Moffat)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this vital transnational study, Kimberly D. Hill critically analyzes the colonial history of central Africa through the perspective of two African American missionaries: Alonzo Edmiston and Althea Brown Edmiston. The pair met and fell in love while working as a part of the American Presbyterian Congo Mission—an operation which aimed to support the people of the Congo Free State suffering forced labor and brutal abuses under Belgian colonial governance. They discovered a unique kinship amid the country's growing human rights movement and used their familiarity with industrial education, popularized by Booker T. Washington's Tuskegee Institute, as a way to promote Christianity and offer valuable services to local people. From 1902 through 1941, the Edmistons designed their mission projects to promote community building, to value local resources, and to incorporate the perspectives of the African participants. They focused on childcare, teaching, translation, construction, and farming—ministries that required constant communication with their Kuba neighbors. Hill concludes with an analysis of how the Edmistons' pedagogy influenced government-sponsored industrial schools in the Belgian Congo through the 1950s. A Higher Mission illuminates not only the work of African American missionaries—who are often overlooked and under-studied—but also the transnational implications of black education in the South. Significantly, Hill also addresses the role of black foreign missionaries in the early civil rights movement, an argument that suggests an underexamined connection between earlier nineteenth-century Pan-Africanisms and activism in the interwar era.

Book excerpt: “The reason you love Jamie (or are about to) is because she says exactly what the rest of us are thinking, but we’re too afraid to upset the apple cart. She is a voice for the outlier, and we’re famished for what she has to say.” --Jen Hatmaker, New York Times bestselling author of Of Mess and Moxie and For the Love Wildly popular blogger "Jamie the Very Worst Missionary" delivers a searing, offbeat, often hilarious memoir of spiritual disintegration and re-formation. As a quirky Jewish kid and promiscuous punkass teen, Jamie Wright never imagines becoming a Christian, let alone a Christian missionary. She is barely an adult when the trials of motherhood and marriage put her on an unexpected collision course with Jesus. After finding her faith at a suburban megachurch, Jamie trades in the easy life on the cul-de-sac for the green fields of Costa Rica. There, along with her family, she earnestly hopes to serve God and change lives. But faced with a yawning culture gap and persistent shortcomings in herself and her fellow workers, she soon loses confidence in the missionary enterprise and falls into a funk of cynicism and despair. Nearly paralyzed by depression, yet still wanting to make a difference, she decides to tell the whole, disenchanted truth: Missionaries suck and our work makes no sense at all! From her sofa in Central America, she launches a renegade blog, Jamie the Very Worst Missionary, and against all odds wins a large and passionate following. Which leads her to see that maybe a "bad" missionary--awkward, doubtful, and vocal—is exactly what the world and the throngs of American do-gooders need. The Very Worst Missionary is a disarming, ultimately inspiring spiritual memoir for well-intentioned contrarians everywhere. It will appeal to readers of Nadia Bolz-Weber, Jen Hatmaker, Ann Lamott, Jana Reiss, Mallory Ortberg, and Rachel Held Evans.

Missionary Stan Dale dared to enter their domain and be an instrument to change their future. Peace Child author, Don Richardson, tells the story of Dale, his wife, his companions, and thousands of Yali tribesmen in Lords of the Earth. Book excerpt: Their paths to God’s purpose led them together. Many know the heroic story of Jim Elliot’s violent death in 1956, killed along with four other missionaries by a primitive Ecuadorian tribe they were seeking to reach. Many also know the prolific legacy of Elisabeth Elliot, whose inspiring influence on generations of believers through print, broadcast, and personal testimony continues to resonate, even after her own death in 2015. What many don’t know is the remarkable story of how these two stalwart personalities—single-mindedly devoted to pursuing God’s will for their young lives, certain their future callings would require them to sacrifice forever the blessings of marriage—found their hearts intertwined. Their paths to God’s purpose led them together. Now, for the first time, their only child—daughter Valerie Elliot Shepard—unseals never-before-published letters and private journals that capture in first-person intimacy the attraction, struggle, drama, and devotion that became a most unlikely love story. Riveting for old and young alike, this moving account of their personal lives shines as a gold mine of lived-out truth, hard-fought purity, and an insider’s view on two beloved Christian figures.

With these words, David Livingstone confirmed that he, too, would spend his life telling people in far-off lands about the love of God. This explorer, doctor, author, and missionary longed to see "the smoke of a thousand villages," because huddled around African tribal fires were people who might never hear the story of God's love unless missionaries obeyed God's call to serve Him. David Livingstone is one of 22 men and women whose exciting adventures will be enjoyed by the whole family. As you read each of these wonderful stories aloud during family times or on your own, you will see how you, too, can reach out to your world through deeds and prayer to tell others the good news about Jesus and His love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What am I, a chief investment officer of one of the country’s largest investment managers, doing hailing down strangers at night on the streets of New York City? “Are you Catholic?” my friends and I ask. “Would you like a rosary? Would you like to go to confession here tonight?” “Are you kidding?” responds one man. “Been there, done that!” says another. “God, no!” chimes in a fast-walking atheist. “You Catholics are all pedophiles!” yells one angry woman. Another hands us a bag of dog poop. Sixty-year-old Michael even has advice: “Why don’t you evangelize out in the Middle East, where they need you?” “We’re needed here,” we respond. “This city needs Jesus, too. It needs His love.” * Some nights the tide turns in the Lord’s favor. A young woman approaches us, decked out in showy attire. “Are you guys really Catholic? I didn’t think there were any Catholics left! Can I have a purple rosary?” “Sure! Where are you going? We have lots to talk about.” “I’ve got to run! I’m a stripper. But I’m going to pray with this rosary.” * At times, the neighborhood even begins rooting for us. Strangers call out: “Way to go!” “Your courage is inspiring!” We’re in our groove now, engaging strangers with joy—and seeing some of them later in church. On the rough streets of the City, working shoulder-to-shoulder with Christ, we’re no longer alone; we feel God’s grace. You will, too, as you read the dozens of riveting – and often funny – stories in these pages, about ordinary Catholics from the financial sector evangelizing their wary New York neighbors. Indeed, so fascinating are their experiences, you may be tempted one day to join them.
